Every year my family decides what to do for the holidays and where to go. Most of the time I have no say in it because my uncles insist on visiting or they invite us over. It doesn’t help that all of my family lives in Texas, California, and Mexico. This year has been the first time that we have spent Christmas and New Years here at home with just my family in a long time. Last year we took a long trip to Chihuahua, Mexico which is the biggest part/state of Mexico where my mother is from. This would be my fourth time visiting Mexico. Crossing the border is the most nerve racking thing that you could do and I know from experience how dangerous it can be driving to your destination.
The bias of migration is usually ignored, people overlook the pains that immigrants went through in order to start a new life. Like most, immigrants left their countries because of economics or political reasons. The first waves of Cuban immigrants were of the upper and middle class. They were welcomed by the U.S because of their economic and intellectual value. The U.S was happy to open its doors to the Cubans because they were fleeing from a communist government and moving to a democratic one. However, the U.S was not as friendly to those of lower social class.
In the wake of the devastating earthquake of 2009 and the other subsequences that rocked Haiti into complete chaos, had the Haitians in great need of help. The U.S. is only minimally involved with Haiti, but it is not our fault. Most of Haiti’s problems result from an extremely corrupt government (Aronson 1). To provide Haiti with healthcare, housing, and schooling, the U.S. needs to learn to help the Haitians alongside of their government while keeping the culture alive. Therefore, the U.S. as a whole should find a way to persuade the Haitian government to let America provide the Haitian people with the basic human needs.
So, Rainn decided that she didn’t what to be like her family, living with regrets, she wanted to make sure that before she dies she is satisfied with her accomplishments. Which is why Rainn is taking the risk of the school trip on a plane. Life on the island will definitely be an adjustment and will have an effect on Rainn and the other characters. I think the biggest adjustment for them will be figuring it out how to survive with different resources. For example, on the island there no longer is restrooms, kitchens, or common things such as pans for cooking or showers. It will be a struggle in the beginning but I believe that once they are organized and know what kind of resources the island provides the adjustment is
Imagine waking up in a house that is not your home. You do not know what the morning routine is, what is eaten for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or even know what is and what is not appropriate behavior. In the movie Coming to America which was directed by John Landis, Eddie Murphy’s character, Prince Akeem, is in for a cultural shift when he decides to move from Africa to Queens, New York in order to find his princess. In the film, Akeem is exposed to how Africa differs from America when he discovers the differences in power distance, work ethic, and the value of money.
Growing up in Cuba, boys and girls were freely allowed to play with one another. Many girls would climb big trees to get fresh savory mangos. They would fall and scrape their knees while playing hide and seek and even play sports which were considered “manly”. Many girls preferred to work outside the house, they would perform jobs such as; repairing a broken fence or painting the house. Boys were never told not to play with the girls, in fact, they would also help out around the house and clean dishes after a meal. Feminism was never really an issue.
In the late 1800’s, Cuba was fighting for its independence and striving to break free from Spain’s control. On February 28, 1898, the U.S.S Maine mysteriously exploded, which was stationed on the coast of Cuba. This led to the U.S involvement in the Spanish-American War. There were many economic reasons why the U.S joined this war, however, there was nothing significant that would require their involvement. The U.S was already keeping a close eye on the battle between the other two nations; waiting for a reason to intervene. When the explosion of the U.S.S Maine occurred, it gave America the political push they needed to get involved in this war.
The Cuban Revolution had many lasting impacts. One area that was greatly influenced from 1959 to 1990 was gender relations. From the start to the end of the revolution women in Cuba faced many difficulties in gaining civil rights, some people were against it while others fought fiercely for equality, but in the end the quality of these women's lives were changed for the better.
Culture is the shared characters of religion, language, symbols, values, norms, and routines of a specific group. With such a large concept like a culture, there’s bound to be more profound subgenres of cultures to better classify them. Subcultures are more compacted cultural groups within a vast culture. Subcultures can be formed from a person’s racial ethnicity or customs, and examples of subcultures can be Miami’s Cuban-American community to Greek Life on campus.
Women have faced patriarchy and discrimination for centuries. In Cuba, women lives generally meant working for the male figure in the family. That is, until 1959. The Cuban Revolution encouraged equality, meaning equal rights and equal opportunities for everyone, including women. However, obtaining equality is not an easy struggle. In the period from 1959 to 1990, the Cuban Revolution drastically affected women’s lives and gender relations in Cuba due to the improvement in educational opportunities, the increase in economic involvement, and the rise of gender equality in politics and daily life. Nevertheless, the Cuban Revolution also caused social and economic problems for women.
Moving from Nigeria to the United States permanently feels great, but at the same time it is sad leaving some of your loved ones and family behind. There are many events in life, which can change one’s way of thinking. As for me, one of the major changes in my life occurred when I moved from Africa to America. This change has entirely affected my personality positively. Why? Many foreigners want to come to America mostly in search of greener pastures and to further education. It was about seven-years ago when I stepped my feet on the soil of the United states of America, and I remembered vividly how it all started from a dream.
