I have always loved animals and working with them, but I would like to be able to help them when they are sick or injured. Although I love almost every animal, my goal would be to become an Equine Veterinarian. I have grown up loving horses as my mom would say, "When you were little you always wanted to be around horses, and when you couldn't be you were reading about them" (Rogers,D). My interest in becoming a Veterinarian really came full circle when I was asked to care for and bandage my neighbor's horse who had wounded her leg shortly before they planned to go on vacation in Mexico. It was my first real experience caring for a horse who had a serious injury, and watching her heal and being a part of that was eye opening. That experience along with others has driven me to want to be able to do more for animals specifically horses when they are sick or injured.

As for verbal communication, a veterinary technician should be excellent both at speaking and listening. The job specifics include answering around a hundred of questions a day. Specifically, a veterinary technician should give numerous answers to clients, as well as give directions regarding pet care. Whenever people hear the words, “Veterinarian Technician,” they focus mainly on the Veterinarian part, if anything. A Veterinarian Technician takes on many roles in order to help their boss, the Veterinarian by being a hands-on job. For example, they provide basic first aid and nursing care to the patients. Another example of what they do is is assisting the Vet in examinations and procedures. Also, they prepare animals for surgery and anesthesia as well as monitor them during the procedure. They also take blood, take x-rays, and run samples through lab. A Vet Tech is mostly asked to work overtime and stay on call in case of someone not being able to come into work.

When one thinks of a veterinarian, most associate this job title with treating dogs, cats, horses, cows, and other farm and companion animals. However, a relatively small field not known by the general population is that of marine veterinary medicine. If one has a passion for the water and a desire to help the creatures in it, marine veterinary medicine just may be the perfect career.

Veterinary technicians should possess certain qualities that will allow them to successfully complete their degree program and excel at their future job. Strong interpersonal skills will allow the veterinary tech to smoothly handle upset and emotional animal owners. Being able to patiently educate others is also important because veterinary techs must counsel and train animal owners how to properly care for their pets. Similar to medical positions, excellent attention to detail will be needed for accurately recording data, performing diagnostic tests and administering medication to animals. Veterinary techs must feel naturally compassionate towards sick pets and worried owners, but they must be able to stay emotionally strong and make difficult decisions, such as putting an injured animal to sleep.

I will be able to bond with the pets during their time in the office and teach owners how to take care of them better. When they are in need, I will get to help animals recover or live fuller lives. In the U.S, an animal is abused every ten seconds, and we are the only people who can make a change. We will never be able to stop animal abuse, but the least we can do is help the animals who have been abused. Vet Ranch is a non-profit organization that does just that.
