I came to a sense that there isn’t a thing as choosing a “Hmong life” or “American life”. From being completely Hmong to American was a battle. A learned acceptance of being Hmong American is who I am. Hmong American life is a mixture of both cultures. It doesn’t result in losing one for another, but more on balancing.
The American Identity is more than just being a citizen in America. What makes the American Identity is the diversity that exists in America. America is a melting pot, which consists of many ethnic groups, religions, and ideas. It isn’t the appearance that makes you American, it is your mind and the way one acts make one American. Virginia Foxx once said, “The American flag is the most recognized symbol of freedom and democracy in the world.” Americans should know that they live in the greatest countries known to man. A large part of the reason people are protesting it is for equality for colored people. This is not an argumentative statement because blacks can do the exact same things whites can.
Being an American does not mean that you should constantly identify as one culture. If you were born somewhere else in the world, celebrate that culture as well as your American culture. America is a nation where diversity is celebrated by everyone. You don't need to be racially American to recognize yourself as an American citizen. Noda’s self-realization about the crossover between Japanese and American helped her understand that she is eternally Japanese and American.
