Wood is one of the oldest and most commonly used materials in the world. It can be used in architectural structures (building, bridge…), in furniture (table, closet, shelf…), in paper, and in many other different ways. Wood is environmentally friendly, it looks good, it is strong, and it can last hundreds of years. There are two wood species: hardwood and softwood. Hardwood comes from angiosperm trees (flowering trees) that are broad leaved. Hardwood trees have high density, slow growth, fire resistance, complex inner structure, and darker colors. Hardwood trees are short, big in diameter, distorted, and mostly expensive. Examples of hardwood: mahogany, maple, oak, and beech. There are five types of grain directions: straight, spiral, interlocked, wavy, and irregular. Straight grain pattern appears in wood species that grow straight and parallel with the tree’s trunk. Wood with straight grain pattern is easiest to work with. Spiral grain pattern appears in wood species that grow with the grain at a slight incline. Interlocked grain pattern appears in the same wood species that have spiral grain pattern but have changed their direction. Depending on these direction changes, the wood can be shallowly or strongly interlocked. Wavy grain pattern appears in wood species where the grain grows in a wavy fashion. Irregular grain pattern is a wood grain that twists or swirls in an abnormal way. Irregular grain pattern can result from many factors, such as branches separating from the trunk, knots, and burls. Rays refer to a characteristic that is also found in wood . Rays are like ribbons extending vertically through the tree, these formations allow the transmission of sap. Earlywood is formed during springtime and it is a broad zone of the wood. It is produced more in amount and it is less dense. Latewood is formed during winter season after earlywood and it is a narrow zone of the wood. It is produced less in amount and it
