This chapter can help young writers in English class with their papers in many different ways. For instance, Trimble gives examples on what a veteran writer does in order to make their writing interesting. He also gives out techniques on how you can get a reader’s attention or how you can fix your writing to make it readable instead of having nonsense. What makes this difficult for me as a writer is that I write what ever comes to my mind and it will not make sense. Another thing that makes it difficult for me as a writer is that I am not good at getting the readers attention and having him hooked on to my work.
Instead, he should have expressed other reasons why he is successful in life. Many people have more than one outstanding quality about them. Taking that into consideration, A Study of Ambidexterity was a well written essay even though he could have thought of more ways to express his best qualities. So taking, this type of essay out of college writing courses allows students to improve on other writing components. You would not have to stress, struggle, and contemplate on writing about yourself just to see how strong you write about yourself.
He even chose the profession of teaching. Graff describes a traditional viewpoint of first closely reading a book and then having an intellectual discussion, but this isn't what happened to him. He needed a passionate conversation to give him ground to stand on before diving into a reading. He found this to be the case for a lot of his students as well. Graff suggests that being able to to discuss literature is a primary factor in being able to read well.
My Literary Journey When you are reading, the author includes lessons for the reader to discover and understand along the way. Some authors share their personal experiences with us. They can be either good or bad. If they are good they encourage us to pursue these experiences through hidden messages in the book. If they are bad they encourage us to not pursue these experiences through certain events that are expressed through the plot of the story.
The reason that I’m taking AP Literature is because I would like to understand different style of writing and how the author tries to sway the audience with their words. Another reason that I decided to take this class is because I want to be able to write better essay and learn how to get my point across without making it harder for people to understand. I also want to make a difference in the world with my words which has a big impact on people. I want to be able to write my story of what I have been through and how it has impacted my life but has made me stronger than I was before, and that anyone get through anything if you have support from others. I also am not taking the class for college credit but it would be nice to have it.
I have personally always disliked writing, especially an assignment like this one that is so creative and open to one 's own ideas. They cause me a lot of stress. I like to be given a topic or specific writing instructions when it comes to writing an essay. I like structure, facts, and ideas that I can use, or maybe it’s because I don’t like writing about myself.
A storyteller might tell us what 's going to happen beforehand to keep us intrigued. If the storyteller hints at what 's going to happen they only tell part of it, so the reader doesn 't know the whole story and will have to keep reading to find out the whole explanation. The storyteller could use foreshadowing to give the reader a piece of the story but not everything. Once the reader sees the use of foreshadowing or a hint that the storyteller left they will want to keep reading to find out how that part happened. The storyteller also adds mystery to the book because the reader knows what happened but doesn 't know if it goes deeper than just the surface.
My teacher explained how to complete a narrative, and procedural essay clearly. I would love to use some of her teaching methods someday. It 's an amazing feeling to be able to write about an experience that altered your life. If I teach English someday, I want my students to learn how to express themselves when they write. It would be exciting to be able to sit down and read my students papers.
Author E.M. Forster once said, “How do I know what I think until I see what I say?”(Forster). Academic writing has the ability to reveal the students inscribed thoughts and opinions in ways that may surprise even them. The better get at writing analytically, the easier it is for them to apply those skills to other aspects of their life. People who write in journals often find it a useful form of exploring self-awareness (Ribeiro 2015). By writing down student ideas and perspectives in essays, even in non-academic disciplines, they hone their own expression skills, identify patterns, observed events and consider possible solutions.
There’s expressive writing, informative writing, and persuasive writing. Expressive writing is usually addressed when writing something personal and is when the writer uses personal feelings or experiences, an example is a personal journal. Informative writing addresses a person that the writer is trying to teach something to, an example of this is a teacher writing a paper for students to read and review. And finally there’s persuasive writing, persuasive writing is used to convince the reader to agree or disagree with the topic written, an example of this is a research paper.
This class helped me change my writing style. I have a habit of making my writing very personable. When I’m reading a story, I love being able to feel emotion through the words but what I realized is that not everything that is written is a story. That is something I never considered before.
While taking English 090, I have learned to overcome this fear. Getting feedback from others during workshop days was very useful because I received tips on how to make changes to your paper to make it stronger. This gave me the opportunity to practice my critical reading/thinking skills by actively reading our partners papers. This also gave us the freedom to leave remarks in the margins of others’ essay to not only help them, but help ourselves learn. While writing the unit 3 paper, I got to practice and meet the course objective of actively reading.
In Lamott’s writing, she animates her ideas of writing raft drafts to the readers. Lamott delivers her message very creatively by using various descriptive and poetic phrases, making her piece entertaining and impressing. She frankly talks about her struggles as a writer in order to encourage the readers to feel comfortable making their first attempts. However, because of her language style in the article, her argument becomes vague. From the reader’s point of view, the intention of this article seems to be a ‘writing guide for beginners’ rather than an argumentative essay because her writing lacks evidence and credibility.
Critical thinking is analyzing, synthesizing, evaluating, and thinking logically like thinking something through before you do it. Reading and writing help with critical thinking, because it helps you navigate how to get to the solution of the problem you are having. In writing, you have to go through all these steps to get a good paper like brainstorming, rough draft, and proofreading so while you are doing all these steps your brain is putting everything together so in the end you come out with a great paper. In brainstorming, you are thinking of all these ideas and connecting them so you can come up with your two thesis statements, argument, introduction, hook and a conclusion. A rough drafted is taking your ideas and making them into a body paragraph and writing about your topic.
The act of memorizing and repeating, absorbing only until the next subject lesson of memorizing and repeating comes along. Maybe for some, whose mind works in this way, it is a productive way to learn, I however, need to absorb. I need to be able to relate the information I have learned in order to retain it. I am that person who reads the manuals. I enjoy reading the instruction manual.
