Oh man I am so tired! In some school’s they start at 8:00 and one school starts at 7:17 am. Most of the kids are still half asleep. How can you prevent this from happening. In the article, “Should School start later” By Lisa M. Herrington, it addresses the positives and the negatives of having school start earlier. In the video, “Should Students Start School Later in the Morning” by ABC Report it talks about why should school start earlier than it already is. In the infographic “Wake Up Call” by Sarah Mckibben it discusses that teens need 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep each night. This should absolutely be put into effect.
To begin with teenagers usually need 8.5 hours of sleep a day. Not enough sleep for students has gone to far. 22,000 kids all across the USA are stressed and tired for school. School should start later because starting school early is not just a student complaint, it's an observation backed up by science. Studies have shown the brain doesn't properly function until two hours after students leave there rooms in the morning. 70 percent of teens aren't getting enough sleep. Activities also can interfere with a students sleep.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine asserts that early school days lead to accidents along the roads, depression among the young teenagers, and upsurge in poor performance academically for middle and high school students. Teens struggle through the challenge of waking up very early in the morning so that they can be at school at the right time. Research implies that teens should get at least eight to nine hours of night sleep for their good health. Various sponsors such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and Centers for Disease Control have the strong advice on why schools should start later. Nevertheless, by being able to sleep more before school starts, students will be able to become well rested, more attentive in classroom settings, and perform better as learners.
Most districts already have staggered start times for the schools and they report that delaying the high school start time would have a domino effect on all the schools which would become a disaster. Teens may be more likely to get the recommended amount of sleep. A delayed start time could help teens sleep during their natural sleep/wake cycles. Teens may be less likely to depend on caffeine to stay awake during the day. Sleeping longer could reduce health-related issues that accompany sleep deprivation.

Teens on average need at least 9 hours of sleep every night. With our school schedules teens are getting less than 7 hours of sleep every night. Also scientists say that sleep can help with memory and your health.

This lack of sleep can cause numerous negative side effects on teens. If school started later in the morning kid’s health and grade would improve as well as their sports performance. Schools should start later in the morning because students would be able to get the full 8-9 hours of sleep and perform better in school and sports and their health would improve. Starting school later in the morning has many benefits such as improvement in school, and sports.
Waking up early affects teenagers’ social life, mentality, physical being, and academic career. A study has proven that lack of sleep will affect a teenagers’ life in a negative way, “Overtime, not obtaining enough sleep can hurt student’s healthy, safety, social life, and school career.” (National Sleep foundation 1) Due to teenagers naturally not being able to fall asleep till later in the night and forcing students to wake up severely early in the morning for school, they are exhausted. A recent study shows that students are tired throughout their school day, 60% of children under 18 say that they are tired throughout the day (National Sleep Foundation 1)
Research has shown that teenagers experience a change in their internal sleep clocks so that waking up early and going to sleep early are difficult. Some schools are deciding to begin later in the day and end later in the day to accommodate students’ natural sleep clocks. I believe that schools should begin and end later in the day. Schools should begin and end later in the day because students would be more alert in their class, students would be more interactive in class, and students would get better grades.
School starting times has been an ongoing debate with no end in sight. Due to early mornings, adolescents have been found to sleep less, and with a hefty majority of young people not getting the necessary amount of sleep, there are many damaging side effects. I believe that the school start time should be pushed back because learning capabilities can be compromised, the body does not respond well on limited sleep, and danger on the road is greatly increased. Many studies have been piloted that demonstrate the benefits of delaying school starting times.
Everybody on this planet can agree that sleep is a beautiful thing. Whether your an adult, a baby, a younger, or an older child, it seems pretty clear that everyone of us can agree that we need more sleep throughout the week. Kids should have there schools start at a later time because that means more sleep! Although many of our bodies don't want to fully go to bed early, we still may want to have more time to sleep in the morning. Kids that have activities outside of or after school, get home late enough, along with sometimes loads of homework, and don't get to bed until an unnecessary late time. People don't like having to get up early, even though the day ends shorter when it starts earlier, some people would maybe rather have it the other way around. Skimping on sleep days has become a bad habit for most American children. And for most school-aged kids, 10 and 1/2 hours is ideal. Most kids are going to bed at 10 p.m. or later on school nights making it harder to wake up in the morning let alone trying to stay awake in class, which is why we need to change the times kids need to get up in the morning and leave for school all around the world.
Middle schoolers’ grades declining, laziness, and absences can all be caused by lack of sleep. Most Middle schoolers don’t get the greatest amount of sleep for school. Observers have noticed kids being lazy or yawning due to lack of sleep. Why not start school earlier? There are several reasons why schools should start later.
Sleeping Schools Countless students all over the US struggle to keep their eyes open throughout the day because school classes start too early in the morning. If we were able to give an hour to students in the morning, we would see an increase in their physical mentality, their academic skill level, and an overall happier lifestyle. Many people will argue that starting school too late in the morning will cause after school activities -- such as sports and other clubs -- no time to meet before the night ends. But I must mention that we don’t need to push the start time that much later to see a huge improvement on student’s test scores, overall grades, and a student’s mood. The current school start time is unacceptable when thought about logically, and we must make the changes to have school start at a later time.
Teenagers all over the country are struggling with their sleep. They struggle to get out of bed every day. The weekend is their only break. Why is this, schools start too early. School start times should be later. When schools switch to later start times they find huge decrees in unexcused absences and tardiness. They will also see positive student growth with test scores and grades. Finally, there would be a wonderful change in depression and other mental illnesses that are now too common in teens.
Many believe that schools should start later because teens are being sleep deprived due to waking up too early. However, if the time were to change to later school start times, it causes a financial problem. It costs millions of dollars to buy more buses, and people rather not use the money on school buses when it could finance another field. Some kids also don 't want later school times, saying it interferes with "after-school jobs, athletics, or other extracurricular activities.
