Known as the bloodiest single-day battle in American History, the Battle of Antietam took place at Antietam creek in Maryland. Strategic plan unveiled and outnumbered, things didn’t start off smoothly for General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate army; yet, even with a copy of the enemy’s plan and a two-to-one advantage, did things work out for Union! With one side disadvantaged and the other wasting their advantages, the battle stayed undecided for hours- that is until violent attacks to General Lee’s troop had the Confederate army retreating. Although, the Battle of Antietam does not have a clear victorious side, the Union declared it as a victory and used the victory to justify the “Emancipation Proclamation”
The Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 18–20, 1863,[1][2] marked the end of a Union offensive in southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia called the Chickamauga Campaign. The battle was the most significant Union defeat in the Western Theater of the American Civil War and involved the second-highest number of casualties in the war following the Battle of Gettysburg. The Battle of Chattanooga was a very important battle part of the Civil War. Inside that battle were a few other important small battles, one being the Battle of Lookout Mountain. The Battle of Lookout Mountain was important in helping get an advantage in the Battle of Chattanooga. This battle was also significant for many reasons. In this battle, each side progressed a lot for each side to end up where they were when the battle was over.

Previous tactics the Union used resulted in bloody combat with numerous casualties, so they decided to go along with setting up a blockade. To accomplish this, the Union army started seizing cities near the Mississippi River to start cutting the Confederacy into two. One such victory was lead by Ulysses S. Grant, who took control of Vicksburg on July 4th 1863. Another important victory took place as "General William Tecumseh Sherman led his army on a rampage through the south during his march to the sea in 1864 depriving the south of vital food and materials as he and his men destroyed or captured anything that stood in their way." *** These two victories enabled the Union to have the upper hand.

Atlanta played an important role during the Civil War. Founded in 1837 as a railway center for northwestern Georgia, Atlanta's original name was "Terminus." By 1852, its population had reached 3,000, including some 500 slaves. Because of its location and commercial importance, Atlanta was used as a center for military operations and as a supply route by the Confederate army during the Civil War. Therefore, it also became a target for the Union army.

While serving in the Civil War, Grant had many battles, most of which were won. Some battles he won were the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Chattanooga, Fort Henry, and finally Fort Donelson (CivilWar.org). He most recalled battle was Vicksburg. This battle was like no other because Grant split his army in half strategically. Grant headed toward Vicksburg while he sent Sen. William T Sherman to Jackson which happened to be the capital (CivilWar.org).

The bloodshed caused by the numerous battles during the war forged many unique leadership styles. One of the most major and complex battles that occurred during the American Civil War was the Siege of Vicksburg. The Siege of Vicksburg took place from May to July of 1863 and was a key turning point in the American Civil War.

After 4 years of war, called the Civil War, between the North and South, the South finally surrendered and all African-Americans were now American citizens and were able to be among the whites. After the Civil War, they turned into a stage of Reconstruction. Reconstruction is the act of building something back up again to its original form, or even better than before. The reconstruction in our society after the Civil War was really important because it helped rebuild the torn down places in the South, it helped support and heal African Americans, and it helped shape new mindsets of the Inhabitants in the United States of America. This is why the reconstruction in our society after the Civil War was important.
The civil war had a very profound effect on America and what it has become today. With the civil war many changes took place such as 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment. Women’s rights were put forth into motion. Along with Reconstruction laws being passes and the push back that these laws caused. During this time the south became even more divided and started to take things into account and create their own laws in regards to racism.
Before this Lee was making all the Union Generals look terrible and then the Union finally got a win. This changed the whole war because then the Union started winning more battles and they would add up and eventually lead to them winning the war. Along with the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Gettysburg was almost a draw, but the Union took the win. Later in the war, a General named Tecumseh Sherman thought that by destroying the southern infrastructure, he would revoke the south of its morale, and its ability to fight. A major theme of the Civil War was war was terrible, as supported by Battles of Antietam, Gettysburg, and General Sherman’s Total War.
