Measures of well-being have also assessed the more emotional side of happiness: feelings of elation and other positive emotions, usually by asking people to describe their typical mood over the last few weeks, or to say how much of the time they have been feeling happy. The third important dimension that has been measured is that of psychological distress, with its inverse links with satisfaction. Measures are based on judgments of unhappiness, depression and anxiety. The final component that that we shall consider is health – closely correlated with others, and as we shall see, both a cause and an effect of them.
In this project we are focusing work-life area on individual happiness and that is pretty much related with job satisfaction. Another approach is to measure the separate aspects of work that is salary, relation with co-workers and so on.
Salary:
Usually the first thing which been asked to an employee by their friends and relatives is the Salary. It is the cause of motivation, satisfaction and happiness related to work-life. But sometimes it is more a source of dissatisfaction rather than satisfaction.
Salary matters more to some individuals than others. Those who are most concerned about it are men, younger workers, and those at lower levels in organizations, that is those who are paid less. People are more satisfied if they are getting paid more than their expectations but that usually doesn’t happen very often. And if the salary remains constant for a certain period of time then a person is less satisfied with their job and thus causes unhappiness in
If you think about it the average person will spend over half their lifetime working, if you can spend that time doing something that you love, you will ultimately be a happier person. Personal fulfillment is the number one aspect of employee satisfaction. Personal fulfillment means different things to different people. Some people are motivated by money, while others are motivated by respect or the different options of benefits. It all just depends on what aspects make you happy with your career.
In 2009 President Obama signed into law the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (The Whitehouse, n.d.). The major provisions of this Act prohibits wage discrimination based on sex, race, or national origin among employees for work in equivalent jobs. According to National Committee on Pay Equity (n.d.), the Act defines “equivalent jobs are those who’s composite of skill, effort, responsibility, and working conditions are equivalent in value, even if the jobs are dissimilar.” Today women earn roughly seventy-nine cents for every dollar earned by men. Atchinson, Belcher, and Thornsen (2013) state that women have entered the workforce not only because of increased educational opportunities but also because of the need for two paychecks in many families
The fact that happiness is a state of well-being pursued by humans since the beginning of humanity is not new. Since the ancient Greek philosophers, happiness has always been a goal for people. However, the definition of happiness is still subjective and controversial as Mark Kingwell, an award-winning social critic, essayist, and professor of philosophy at the University of Toronto, presents in his article “In pursuit of Happiness." The author begins to build his credibility by calling everyday facts and emotions, also by citing philosophers, researchers, and other authors. Using the sources effectively in a persuasive piece, Kingwell demonstrates, through examples and science researches, the difficulty in defining happiness, which can result in unhappiness.
Annotated Bibliography Rubin, Gretchen. “The Happiness Project.” The Happiness Project, Harper Collins USA, New York, 2016. My first resolutions is saving money.
In Rubin’s writing in Pursuing Happiness she goes over the main correlation between money and happiness. She uses many examples that she constantly refers back to in her writing. Through the justified facts in the beginning to the relatable spending and decision making, she clearly defines that money, when spent wisely to the person can make them pursue happiness. Through her many creditable and relatable examples, she cleary accomplishes the purpose of informing us on how money can relate to happiness.
In our modern society, each individuals have their own definition of happiness. Aristotle said “Happiness is a state of activity.”, and the Bible states that true happiness can only be found in relationship with God. On the contrary, in the novel Brave New World, the controllers of the World State decide what happiness is, and condition the citizens into believing that perspective. However, this lead into sacrificing many aspects which we feel beauty and value, such as love, liberalism, passion. This resulted in changing the society in Brave New World different from our society.
10 Reasons Why You Should Pay Attention to Your Happiness Project What is a happiness project? We can call the happiness project an approach to bring a significant change to your life. It starts with the preparation stage where you identify with the things which bring satisfaction and joy, and also those which cause you resentment and anger. Keeping in mind these things, you make resolutions and comply with them to benefit from your happiness project. Some people deviate from this approach but if you have the following traits in your personality, you have strong enough reasons to stick to the project.
Their only desire is to roll in the dough. Those people may think they are enjoying life by being materialistic. Nonetheless, having all the money in the world won’t lead
Reading this book has made me think twice about a lot of my ways of thinking. It has made me reevaluate many of my thought processes about people and life. It has shown me great ways of staying positive and projecting that positiveness on to others. If more people could take in these outstanding lessons I believe the world would be over flowing with loving relationships full of happiness.
The article written by Susan M. Heathfield about human motivation at work. She shares her opinions about employee inspiration and what they want from work. The author starts the article by presenting all the different motives for what any person chose to work at any job or career path. However, in the end all resumes to the money. Susan states that no matter how you call it “compensation, salary, bonuses, benefits or remuneration, money pays the bills”.
I do think we are in control of our own happiness because I think the human controls how we feel on a day to day bases because of the actions we do so really I do think we control our own happiness just how we control our actions. So One example is our decisions that we do during the day make our happiness because if you start thinking about all this negative stuff you won't be happy therefore like say if your in school and all this negative stuff starts to happen you just got to deal with it because if you don't then that shows that your not a strong person inside and that any little thing will bother and will ruin your day and so if you just know how to deal with it and put it aside and not let it break your happiness then that shows that
(1991) indicates that the balance between negative and positive feelings is a good indicator of happiness. This suggests the measurement of objective happiness by means of individual balance of positive and negative experiences. Other studies revealed that purely measuring positive emotions, strong implications could be made about the individual happiness level; they can be seen as markers and sources of happiness (Diener, 2005). This is the reason why Seligman only used positive emotions in the PERMA model. Having a valued and worth filling positive life also strongly depends on positive emotions, (Fredrickson, 2001) due to the high correlation of life satisfaction and SWB (Michalos, et al., 2009).
Among scholars, the different facets of job satisfaction included feelings toward a job, pay, benefits, supervision, coworkers, the work itself, organizational environment, and work conditions as stated by Biggs & Swaile; Fichter & Cipolla (as cited by Appiah, 2016). Aziri (as cited by Appiah, 2016) stated that employees were usually more productive, more stable, and had a better
Happiness is an aspect of an individual that can change daily. The intervention assignment is motivated by the assumption that subjective happiness has the possibility of increasing by doing a specific behaviour that is known to cause happiness. For this second intervention, I have decided to do acts of kindness for three days. Numerous past studies, including those conducted by Layous, Nelson, Oberle, Schonert-Reichl, and Lyubomirsky (2012), Kerr, O’Donovan, and Pepping (2014), and Otake, Shimai, Tanaka-Matsumi, Otsui, and Fredrickson have indicated that participating in acts of kindness can lead to increased levels of happiness and well-being.
