The progressive era was a historical movement in time where extensive social activism and political reform were taking place all across America. If would be inadequate to say that one class of women, either the working class or the middle class, were affected more or less than the other by this era. They were both handing different forms of change and reform, but all of equal value. The working class women were piloting research, implementing reformation programs, attempting to increase wages, improve working conditions, and lobbying legislation to make positive changes. Amongst the working class women were many notable women that changed history. An example of such women was Susan B. Anthony. They were oftentimes referred to as the “moral guardians”. Women of the progressive era united to fight against racism, raise wages, and improve the working condition of female workers. It was both of these classes of women working together that were the driving force behind change and reformation in the progressive era. Women in the Progressive Era accomplished much significant reorganization. They had achieved many victories, but perhaps the sweetest of these triumphs was the passage of the 19th Amendment, which won women’s suffrage. The Roaring Twenties was a prime era for women. Because of the toils of many strong women, ideals were flipped on their head, to America’s benefit. In the late 1800’s, two women, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, quickly realized that women would not be able to share their political views unless given the right to vote. Because of the fact that women had basically no other societal roles besides housework, they were not respected during this time period.

The main things that happened during the progressive era were removing problems triggered by corruption in government and other things. The Payne- Aldrich Tariff was passed just so the government could make money. The U.S. House of Representatives began a bill rising tariffs on goods entering the United States. Underwood Tariff is like the Payne- Aldrich Tariff; it was passed so the government could make money.
During the progressive era our country faced many problems. The rise of substantial businesses caused industrial problems. Women suffrage, alcohol, child labor, and safety issues caused social problems. The necessitation of citizens in government decisions also caused political problems. Progressives were people who wanted to solve all of these quandaries.

The Gilded age was a period in the late 1800s (1865-1900) that showed tremendous increase of wealth caused by the industrial age. The lifestyle of the rich during this period hid the many problems of the time that eventually brought about the progressive era movement. This was a movement for reform between 1900-1920s. Forces such as immigration, the Populist Party and industrialization that led to the progressive era also impacted the American government both in its activeness and its democracy.

During this time Americans worked to create solutions to the problems caused by the rapid industrialization and urbanization of the country. The progressive era was not a single movement, but rather a collection of movements all of which were intended to improve the lives of Americans. This was a truly remarkable time for women and the end of the era would see almost universal women’s suffrage with the passing of the nineteenth amendment in 1920.
The Progressive Era was the period in the history of the United States, that was dominated by reform ideals from 1890-1920. This era consisted of many changes to achieve the elimination of industrialization, urbanization, immigration and corruption in the government. Progressives were well known to have the goal of achieving the ultimate “American Dream”. The argument of whether or not progressivism and democracy go hand in hand is clear, their relationship needed to correlate for the United States to reach prosperity. Using the historical interpretations of George Mowry, Joseph Huthmacher, and James J. Connolly, I will explain who the progressives were and what their reformed society entailed. I will also state what historian is most persuasive and why.
