The development of the stalemate on the western front in November of 1914 was a result of multiple faults in the German Schlieffen plan and the French Plan XVII. the western front was developed toward the end of 1914 when Germany and France commence digging trenches, installing barbed wire boundaries, and introducing standing artillery. Introducing the western front created a stagnant war and thrusted forward the infamous stalemate. As Source A indicates ,the battle of the Marne had forced both Germany and France to dig trenches which created equal opposition.

The Battle of Dieppe, or Operation Jubilee, was a calculated collaborative allied infantry and naval attack in an attempt to take the port of Dieppe and the surrounding beaches. Before David O’Keefe’s scholarly contribution to the events surrounding Dieppe, it was largely understood that Dieppe was a trial run for amphibious attacks against the German front in France. It was seen as a huge disaster as sixty-eight percent of allied soldiers that engaged the Germans were either killed or wounded. There is a multitude of reasons as to why the number of casualties were so high. The most apparent of which being that the port, and surrounding beaches, were heavily guarded with artillery, machine guns, barbed wire, and German soldiers.
so I found it even more intriguing to think that this had actually happened. Even with the success of the Fair, we still see the many hardships that in the modern world we would never think could happen, such as the amount of deaths, the tension, and how people reacted to this events. It seems so fictional, but is all historically accurate. I also saw that Larson’s storyline went to even more depth than I would have imagined, each individually named person in this story was connected to either character, and had a distinguished role in their lives. With this book I also learned more about the time period, and how dangerous it used to be.
The Civil War, 1861-1865, ended up being so calamitous, with the United States leading up to becoming a World Power in the 20th century. There was a collapse in industrialization, initiating the courage and hope of the Americans. The U.S tried to become this world power by attempting to first make their military stronger, offering trades with different countries, by joining different territories as well as buying different ones; they did whatever they had to do in order to become a world power. Setting up markets for raw material, as well as, keeping the inferior people well acquainted is what the imperialists insisted on building the economy. Although the New Deal was effective, its was also controversial. However, despite this fact, the New Deal was a necessary government response to a major American crisis.

There was a widespread fear of Bolshevism and anarchism all over the United States, which was influenced by the Russian Revolution as well as the Worldwide Communist Revolution. Labor strikes, walkouts, social disorder, race riots, murders and much more violence had created chaos and paranoia throughout the nation. The Iowa State Fair is the most influential events throughout the state of Iowa during the month of August. This is a place where one can go to experience shows, art, food, and see livestock from all around the country. Most people however, go to this fair simply to have fun. On my visit to the Iowa State Fair in the previous summer, tasting all of the different foods, quality of the rides and the positive attitude from the carnival workers highly encourages me to come back year after year.
In Erik Larson’s novel The Devil in the White City takes place during the Gilded Age. During this period of time everything appears good and golden on the outside when in reality everything was full of corruption. In the novel, the author takes the reader to the city of Chicago, where the city is “swelled “in population causing the city to expand in all “available directions” (Larson 44). As Chicago became the “second most populous [city] in the nation after New York” there was an urge that city show off to the world and the nation of how great it was through the Chicago World’s Fair (Larson 44).
In addition to educational exhibits, the fair also provided an opportunity for entertainment. The world 's first Ferris wheel performed on the fair 's Midway, as did a zoo, a fun house, and a swimming pool. Not only did foreign countries send authorized displays, entrepreneurs also accumulated displays depicting life in the villages of less prosperous countries. Many people who went to the fair took side tours to see shows, which had set up just outdoor the fair grounds. In the past, Paris hosted the Fair, and was seen worldwide as a success. The United States had to create something that would beat that of Paris, and had chosen two options: Chicago and New York. Eventually, Chicago was chosen as the hostess, and once the people heard the news, they “cut loose with a cheer that tore through the canyon of brick, stone, and glass like a flash flood.” (). The fair’s goal was to increase national unity by showing the world that the U.S was architecturally capable.
The World fair was the engineering project of its time. It brought plenty of excitement and attention to itself, but it also brought crime. The problem is, even though everything seems fine with the fair, there were bad things still happening. Stealing, cheating, and in extreme cases even murder. Chicago was in charge of building the World’s fair, but ended up hosting a murderer in its walls.
