Police officers have vowed their life to protect and serve. They risk their lives every day for their communities. As the last few years have sped past us, police officers have been very aggressive with the force they use when arresting a suspect, or even people in general. According to a Texas article on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights, “police officers typically use force offensively rather than defensively and do so with at least some degree of premeditation.” (Gross,2013, page 167). Many police officers get off easily because they call it as self-defense, but it’s not. People being brutally beaten or killed, riots breaking out, mourning of neighborhoods, lawsuits against police departments all can be at stake of police officers using excessive force. This is part of the reason our country has been in an uproar. In the last few years’ police brutality has been at an all-time high. Because of it, movements have been started and protests have broken out. As most should know there has been a split in the diversity of the nation because of it.

The police subculture is a very complicated and closed thing. On page 162 of the textbook, police subculture is defined as “a combination of shared norms, values, goals, career patterns, lifestyles, and occupational structures that is somewhat different from the combination held by the rest of society.” Police work is very dangerous by nature, and can make the officers feel separated from the rest of society. Minorities in the community have been subjected to violence by law enforcement in the United States for some time. This violence is called police brutality and it is unacceptable. The job of a police officer is to maintain public order, prevent, and detect crime. They are a part of a dangerous and stressful career that can involve risky situations that must be controlled. Sometimes police are put in situations that excessive force is needed. Some officers use these extreme measures in situations when it is not needed, police brutality should be addressed by testing police for for racial bias, require more training, and use body cameras.

Police officer’s that serve and protect the community are challenged on a daily basis when it comes to using the correct amount of force during an arrest or detention of a person. These officers are critiqued and questioned regularly when they use force, whether it is deadly force or less lethal force. Police officers are put in positions where they have to use the amount of force to control the situation and they do so by following a guideline such as the Force Continuum or other policies and procedures the department has set in place. Officers need not, and often times cannot afford to, wait for a subject to pull the trigger or try to stab them before they react. The work that police officers do is very complex. There are different rules and codes that they are supposed to follow in order to accomplish their job at their organization. Police officers present different behaviors while patrolling and in other areas of policing that creates many confrontations with the society as well inside their departments with co-workers and other people above them. In police departments exits different codes that police officers follow that many times create that police misconduct and police brutality stay under the rug, without been penalized. In the movie Fort Apache the Bronx it portrayed how police corruption, misconduct and unethical behavior were part of their daily work just because they followed certain codes

Kennedy at the time of 1963 the president of the United States, conveys the principle that all men are created equal no matter your what the color of your skin, your race, or your ethnicity you are equal. Even though so many have fought for equal rights and most people want it to be that way the reality is different. Police brutality is a fact of not only American life but for many others. People of minorities have always been subjected to violence by those in law enforcement. This issue is yet to be solved even though it has been a known problem since long ago. In many cities all over the country, officers are abusing their authority and most of the time they will never even be investigated and when they are it is always a very mild punishment compared to if a regular citizen would have done the same thing. Law enforcement officers carry guns, they are given special privileges and hold a lot of responsibility. Police officers are trusted and expected to respect laws and society at all times. Taking all of this into consideration police officers do in fact break laws quite often. With this knowledge in hand we must do something to minimize police brutality. There are good days and bad days and that is just how it is no matter where you work. The fact that some situations officers go into can be very tough not just for the victim or others affected but also for the officer it can be physically and mentally excruciating. Whether it could be a violent crime scene or maybe even a situation where children are involved. Headlee expressed the fact that officers do not get to pick and choose what type of call they respond to. They go through lots of training to have an open mind, be fair to all, not let the sex or race or even the opinions of a person cloud their judgment to treat the situation in a different way that would not help resolve the problem at hand. Many situations that police officers come into contact with can be settled without an act of being harmful. Police brutality is the world’s largest concern today, because it is dealt with racial discrimination, sexuality, and different economic statuses.

Under recent events, police are being called out for racial brutality. After the killings of black people by police officers, some people are calling it an injustice and that it was race related. Today police are under high amounts of pressure are trying to do the best job that they can. Police, for the most part do not racially discriminate.

In the present debate over how black unarmed people have been treated by police officers has gone to a whole new set of direction. They realize that they actually serve a purpose that extends above and beyond themselves. Policemen put their lives on the lines every day in the society as part of their job. It appears in the wider society that the security officer works only to earn a living for themselves; hence, an appreciation for the Security Officer does not seem apparent. More so, many times, people do not even obey the security officers who’s responsible for their security.
