The “Sooner State,” more formally known as Oklahoma, has a wide range of picturesque terrain. The state’s landscape includes forests, the Great Plains along with hills and lakes. It also has a huge Native American presence, with over 25 different Native American languages spoken. Oklahoma is a state that played a big role in American History. Visitors can learn about this role by visiting the Western Heritage and National Cowboy Museums in the state’s capital city, Oklahoma City. Although Oklahoma is an ideal locale in many ways, the state isn’t immune to the problems experienced across the nation with substance abuse and mental illness. These figures are based off of 2012 data. Oklahoma ranks 3rd in the nation for mental illness, which figures to be 22.4% of the state’s population. When it comes to substance abuse disorders, Oklahoma ranks 2nd with 11.9% of its population suffering with such disorders. These figures mean between 700,000 and 950,000 adult citizens of Oklahoma are in need of help for substance abuse disorders, help with mental illness or both. The maltreatment addressed in this case is Substance Misuse and Environmental Hazards. The child in the home is functioning normally. Child is not exhibiting hunger issues or looking unkempt.
The cherokee (chair-uh-kee) tribe was a tribe located in the southeastern part of the United States in states like Georgia, North and South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Descendants now mostly live in Oklahoma. Many of the descendants now live in Oklahoma because of the Trail of tears which was the removal of Native americans by forcing them to Indian reservation, and if the tribes didn’t go by will the american army would force them.
The Indians in Oklahoma didn’t write their history but spoke it through songs and stories. One of the issues Sterlin addressed was that he felt that there was a loss of culture and the tradition of singing was dying out. He states that change is not necessarily a good thing.
I have seen many people struggle with the stigma of mental illness and use substances to cope with it. There appears to be a grey line when it comes to diagnosing mental health and I think people can really get lost in the
Serious Mental Illness (SMI) and Substance Use Disorders (SUD) each involve symptoms that can be rather debilitating. Approximately one half of the individuals diagnosed with a severe mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder experience co-occurring substance use issues (Brunette et al., 2008). Individuals with a dual diagnosis of SMI and substance use are particularly vulnerable with complex service needs (Tsai et al., 2009). As a result of the high prevalence and serious consequences of these disorders, there is an increasing need for comprehensive treatment options to simultaneously address both issues.
Physical abuse is exactly what anyone could imagine, it involves the physical act of beating, choking, or even sexually assaulting an elderly individual. This might occur in a situation where a caregiver becomes frustrated with an elderly individual for not performing a task the caregiver desires, or could simply be a case where someone takes advantage of an elderly person who may not be capable of retaliating. Psychological abuse is when threats, intimidation, and verbal aggression are used on an elderly person. Psychological abuse can be seen when a decision needs to be made by an elderly individual. One may threaten or intimidate an elder to persuade them to make a desired decision, and the elder would listen in fear or trust that the decision is of the best interest.
Oklahoma is the Heartland of America. When visiting Oklahoma for a vacation we have three great places to visit. These three places would be the highlight of any vacation, no matter the time of year a visit is planned. But do not just limit Oklahoma down to only three places worthy of visiting. This state is rich with heritage, amusement parks, and museums.
Untreated mental illness is dangerous and over time we have learned that locking people with a mental illness is not the solution but makes it worse. People with untreated mental illness face many consequences. “People with untreated psychiatric illnesses comprise 250,000 people, of the total homeless population” (mentalillnesspolicy.org). The quality of life for these individuals is extremely heart breaking, and many are victimized regularly.
There was also sooner, which are people who illegally got into the Indian territory before they were supposed to. Eventually two years later the Indian territory became a part of the United States and was called Oklahoma.
There are so many mentally ill people in correctional facilities because most families do not know how to help their loves ones who suffer from a mental illness, so the call the police for help. Majority of the police officers do not know what to do or how to handle people with a mental illness disease. Police officers who are not trained to deal with the mentally ill often do not recognize that person is ill. Some police officers do not recognize if the individual should or not go to jail or a treatment center or medical facility. The impact of law enforcement and the judicial system dealing with people with a mental illness is to assist the inmates with the help they need.
Oklahoma is home to many Native American tribes that once flourished throughout the country and still have an important presence and history in our state. Relationship abuse is a pattern of coercive and abusive behaviors. Most of the time when abuse goes on during a relationship, it is kept a secret because the victim is afraid of telling. The behaviors that go on are to maintain total control over a spouse or an intimate partner. Relationship is a choice or in other words it’s a learned behavior. Most abusers believe that they can do what they want and get away with it.
Issues of the Case Study From the description of the case study above, the issue concerned is child abuse and neglect. Joyce had experienced child sexual abuse by her now-absent father when she was a child. At all ages, females are more likely to be victims of sexual abuse as well as incest or sexual relations between individuals who are so closely related. Girls are more likely to experience long-term victimization by relatives or family acquaintances in their home ( ). As Joyce’s her parent fails to provide her with basic needs, she has been neglected physically, educationally and psychologically.
Drug abuse is caused by psychological, genetic as well as environmental factors and can have significant damaging effects on health. Psychological factors are associated with the development of drug abuse. Drug abuse often occurs
