Entrance into Leadership Capone entered into the gang life at an early age under Torrio, but he did not immediately rise to power. As people do in the workforce, he struggled and clawed his way to the top after putting in countless hours doing the work for Torrio that he would later have others do for himself. At 19, he married his baby’s mother, Mae Coughlin, and moved to Baltimore with a vow to make a good life for he and his family. After his father unexpectedly died, however, he relocated to Chicago in 1920 and became reunited with his former boss, Johnny Torrio (“Al Capone,” History.com). Torrio had become fairly successful within the gambling and prostitution businesses, but after the 18th was passed, outlawing the sale and consumption of alcohol, Torrio saw a more promising opportunity, however, Torrio abandoned his organization when he was almost killed in an assassination attempt in 1925 (“Al Capone,” History.com).
The police eventually concluded that the gunmen had dressed as police officers and had entered the building under false pretences that they were going to arrest the men. Though Moran and others immediately blamed the massacre on Capone’s gang, this brutal crime would never officially be linked to Capone due to the lack of evidence against him. The famous gangster claimed to have been at his house in Florida at the time, but he was generally considered to have been responsible for the murders. In 1920s, there was a constitutional ban of production, importation, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages in the United States. During this era, gangsters ruled many cities by owning brothels, breweries, and selling alcohol illegally. The massacre happened due to conflict between the two powerful gangs.
When the 18th amendment was passed in 1917, which banned the sale and drinking of alcohol, it was believed to bring only solace to their citizens. Instead crime, especially organized, begun to rise. Infamous mafia bosses such as George “Bugs” Moran, Johnny Torrio and, most importantly, Al Capone. Capone was able to build one of the largest organized crime organizations America had ever seen, and this made him a legend. With the amount of crime he committed in his life he became a legend in American literature because he was an image of a gangster, and writers uses Capone as the prime example for whenever they wrote books about gangs and gangsters.

On February 14, 1929, Moran had a huge shipment of Canadian whiskey coming in and a few of his members of the gang were awaiting the shipment to come in.
