In the dictionary, feminism is defined as “the advocacy of equality of the sexes” (cite). Feminism is not about women wanting world domination; it’s about people, people who want true equality. Yes, its main focus is on sexism against women, but that is not all this movement is. In fact, almost all of the key issues feminism speaks against are just as harmful to men as they are to women.
Feminism has long challenged the societal norms for women, giving them liberation in clothing and thoughts. Some people believe that to be a feminist is to hate men but they are wrong, feminism is to seek equality. Most of the ideas and goals of feminism stay the same no matter which wave of feminism is being looked at. This generation of feminism, known as the fourth wave, is focused most on challenging misogyny and sexism where it exists (Feminism). One movement has shown up in response to the fourth wave feminists called the Men’s Rights Movement; this movement seeks to belittle feminists. The best simile I have ever seen for explaining the men’s rights movement is cupcakes; women have a plain cake, and men have a cupcake with frosting when women want to get frosting on their cakes men start to point out how their cupcakes are not perfect because they don’t have sprinkles or a cherry, and then they say that women should be thankful because men gave them a cake, and they shouldn’t need frosting. They want sprinkles and cherries for themselves before giving women some frosting, hopefully not realizing that there would still be some extreme inequality in that situation. They don’t want women to be equal until they get everything that they want first, and even after they get what they want they still don’t want women to be equal. The MRM uses the experiences of male rape victims to put down, and silence, the female victims. They don’t treat the sentence ‘Men get raped’ as a complete sentence they feel the need to add the word ‘too’ at the end, suggesting that rape can’t be a feminist problem because it’s also been experienced by men. The MRM are a part of the war on women even if they don’t believe that the war on women is real. Movements like the MRM are the reason that many of women’s achievements, and most of feminism, were omitted from history
Over the summer of this year, a survey was conducted. It turns out that 85% of Americans believe in gender equality. That’s pretty good, right? Almost everyone in the United States thinks that men and women should be equal. The second part of the poll asked people if they are feminists. Only 18% of Americans are feminists. Maybe that doesn’t seem striking to you. But here is the Merriam Webster definition of feminism: “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.” So I’ll reiterate- in a room of 100 people, 85 believe in gender equality, but only 18 believe in feminism, which is gender equality. That’s a bit odd, isn’t it? But it’s for just one reason: In today’s society, feminism has a bad rap. People make fun
Feminism is a word that has caused lots of controversy in our society. Some say that feminism is unnecessary and hateful towards men. However, Merriam Webster defines feminism as “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes” (Merriam Webster). Feminism isn’t about hating men, it’s about empowering women. As a group of people who have experienced discrimination, rape/rape culture, and hate for hundreds of years , women have the right to fight for equality. Feminists are often viewed as men hating and dramatic when it’s not the case at all. According to a study done by Stop Street Harassment, an organization dedicated to ending sexual harassment on the streets, about 65% of women have been sexually harassed in their lifetime (StopStreetHarassment.org). This goes to show that feminism is very much needed in today’s society.
Ah, feminism. As some would say, any word with an “ism” on it sounds overwhelming, controlling, and suppressing. Some even tie it to atheism, as it appears to be a movement absent of important religious values. Radical feminists can ruin it for everyone. Known as “feminazis” who work to overpower men and change societal norms by “freeing the nipple” and terminating the hygienic activity of shaving, radicals represent themselves as extreme, militant feminists who solely care about being better than equal. These kind of feminists seek to abolish standards that are necessary for a stable society. According to Janet Bloomfield (2015), blogger at Thought Catalog, “Women, feminists argue[d], are equal, except when they are special and then equal doesn’t count and is unfair and won’t everyone please
Firstly, Radical feminists strongly believe that the patriarchy has a negative influence on the family, as they believe that the patriarchy is the reason why women are exploited and oppressed. They believe that this exploitation and oppression can be evidenced in various ways including in the more extreme circumstances the act of domestic violence. They are of the belief that males think that since they are head of the household they are allowed to control their family in a very authoritative or dictatorial like manner. This thinking in turn can lead to domestic violence which may include not only physical abuse but also emotional and psychological abuse as well as financial mistreatment. Studies have shown that in these cases the male is often the one inciting the violence while women and children are the victims of his anger as he seeks to exert his dominant role. These feminists also believe that should a woman attempt to try and gain greater control or power in the household or disobey the man’s wishes then he will be more likely to respond violently and thus further oppress the woman. This behaviour would obviously have a negative effect on families
Feminism began to take shape in the early 1800s and has progressed and gotten stronger as a movement ever since. The definition of feminism is: the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes. In fact, though, men and women are not equal; we were born to be different, not the same. We all have different strengths and weaknesses and we should not be equal in everything. Women in the feminist movement act as though they are victims and not accountable for their actions, but they are and need to take responsibility. Can they propose that others are not treating them equally if in fact they are doing the same. In turn, the feminist movement should be dismantled because they will never achieve
Feminism according to Merriam Webster dictionary means the belief that women and men should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of political, economic and social equality of the sexes and that it aims to understand the nature of gender inequality. It examines women and
First, we should define feminism. Basically, feminism is a philosophy that advocates equal rights for women and men. The more feminists seek to overthrow any sign of male dominance in our society, to the point where they disapprove the biblical roles of husbands and wives, defending abortion, and so on. Modern feminism is a forged solution to the real issue of the inequality of women. Feminism assumes to itself the right to demand respect and equality in every aspect of life. The modern, feminists call women to rise up and rebel against the order that God has given to mankind. Feminism seeks to force humanistic values in direct opposition to the Word of God.
Feminism is linked to a historical time, in which women fought for the equality of women against men. Although feminism is linked to that time frame, many writers, and authors use the word differently. There are many variations for the word feminism because of the different topics that the word has expanded into. A feminist role in society is to actively recognize the need for, and work towards creating equality for all women. Feminism is purely a movement which intends to enlighten people with a goal of improving gender equality and strengthening women 's status in society. Many movements of feminism can be seen in many articles and advertisements in the path of history. An example of this movement will be Emma Watson 's speech to the United Nations in the year 2014.
Feminism has evolved in recent years because the definition has shifted, there are several types of feminism, and now men are included. It's a belief and now it's becoming into a movement. Feminism is an important topic right now because women are getting together to fight for their rights, to fight for equality. People are becoming more involved by making campaigns and speaking out. There are a few campaigns about feminism. Feminism will keep evolving, is important to women and even men. It is the belief to us all, have the same rights.
Feminism has been brought about by our ancestors to fight for equality in the society. Because they felt that girls were the underdogs, they made a stand to change this paradox but in the generation that we have today, only little know about feminism. For a fact, those who took a subject directly leading to topics like feminism are the only ones who really know what feminism really is. Because of this, it seems as though the efforts of the people who fought for women to vote and to work just like men were all put to waste. Often, when you ask a high school student about feminism there would be no answer at all or if she does answer, the answer would be “it’s about girls fighting for their rights” but it is not merely just about that. Feminism
“Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes” (Oxford Dictionaries). Women are equal to men. Women deserve to be treated fairly. Women deserve all that men deserve. Women are not people who are only capable of taking care of the children and the house. Women and men can do the same and should be treated the same. Gail Godwin and Tillie Olsen are two authors who express this in their works. “A Sorrowful Woman” by Godwin and “I Stand Here Ironing” by Olsen illustrate the complex oppression of social roles within each story by showing the mothers of both stories being completely opposite to the typical “average housewife” image.
Many women believe that modern-day feminism has become a way of victimizing women and vilifying men. A group of women created an online blog on Tumblr called “Women Against Feminism” to share their opinions. Some think this is a movement of hatred towards men. Many hate to be identified as a “feminists” because of the radicals who have ruined the movement by their extremist actions.
What started, as a movement for equality has become the same monster they feared. Feminism advocates for gender equality between genders but a portion of this great movement think to extremely and more people take their side. This radical feminism is something to worry about whether you are a male of female because for example as a male radical feminism has created discrimination not only to my person but also to other men. As woman you should also care because this ruins your reputation as a woman and makes harder to become the hateful always-complaining women stereotype. As humans in society I think we can all agree that women and men are equal and as such treated as equals with no special treatment to neither one but the radical feminism
