Poetry Essay: Eating Alone by Li Young Lee Sharing meals with others is common tradition ritual for humans. So, traditional, in fact, that eating alone conveys a reputation of social embarrassment for example, look at that guy at a table by himself he in fact must be lonely. Where is his loved ones or anyone who knows and cares about him? Why has every left him by his lonesome?
1.“The room smells of lemon oil, heavy cloth, fading daffodils, the leftover smells of cooking that have made their way from the kitchen or the dining room, and of Serena Joy’s perfume: Lily of the Valley. Perfume is a luxury, she must have some private source. I breathe in I appreciate it. It’s the scent of pre-pubescent girls, of the gift young children used to give to give their mothers, for Mother’s Day; the smell of white cotton socks and white cotton petticoats, of dusting powder, of the innocence female flesh not yet given over to hairiness and blood.
The theme for being different is shown in both the passages “Susan B Anthony Dares to Vote”, and the poem “Making Sarah Cry.” Susan is different because in the passage she wants to help make a difference. Sarah is different from all the other kids because the boy makes fun of Sarah every day and he makes Sarah cry. In the stories, it shows that being different is not bad being different it can actually make the world a better place. Even though the themes are the same the social implications are different.
The second tape is addressed to Alex Standall, who during their freshmen year, made a list saying that Hannah had the “best ass” in her freshman class. By being labeled with the “best ass” it leads to Hannah being assaulted numerous times. The third tape was addressed to Jessica Davis, a girl that was also new to the school. Jessica started to date Alex and then was later mad at him for choosing Hannah over her in the list which ended the friendship between Jessica and Hannah, and the ended relationship of Alex and Jessica.
Observation: This story was a little confusing. I had to read the last page three times before I understood it. While reading the story, I noticed the use of symbolism. The cage is a symbol of how the hunger artist feels with society.
This shows that the story itself did not matter as much as the actual act of love. The theme of this poem is, “Physical things sometimes have deeper meanings.” The tone of it was heartwarming, reflective, and grateful. When the reader reads this, he or she can feel and relate to the narrator because we all have parents that we have learned from and are grateful for. That is one reason why this is a great poem because almost anyone can relate to it.
“Maude Clare” is about two people who are soon to be married, but someone from the groom’s past is trying to cause tension. Maude Clare is the groom’s past loved one and she thinks that she is better than the groom’s soon to be bride. Maude Clare has given the couple a gift, but the gift turns out to be an item the groom and Maude Clare shared in the past with each other. Maude Clare wants to get back at the groom for all the hurt he had caused Maude Clare.
“Nikki-Rosa” Poem Analysis In the poem “Nikki- Rosa,” Nikki Giovanni writes with diction and imagery to prove that’s she had a happy childhood in spite of her family’s hardships. Giovanni creates a poem, that although short in words, provides a lasting effect on the reader. Giovanni’s creative use of language and descriptive words, the distinction of black culture from white culture, and memories of average times that made her childhood unique and happy made this poem distinct and exceptional. Giovanni frequently references to her happy childhood in her poem using words and phrases that create an image in your mind showing you that her childhood was in fact a happy one.
‘For What It’s Worth’ by Buffalo Springfield has a logical message because it is referring to the Sunset Strip Riots that took place in Hollywood during the 1960’s. People protested when they lost their civil rights due to a curfew law that was put into place. The song says, “Stop, children, what’s that sound. Everybody look- what’s going down?”
People have the need to always prove their self worth to everyone. In the poem The Leaving, Brigit Pegeen Kelly demonstrates how an individual’s environment and expectations of others encourages a person’s actions. In the poem the girl is so dedicated to her work that she’s willing to stay late even when her father doubts her. The speaker takes on the challenge to prove to her father that she can complete her task, and she successfully proves to him that she can do it. By proving her self worth to her father, the speaker faces new challenges along the way that test her own thoughts and decision making which ultimately determines the pursuit of her hard work.
The poem has actually expressed the casual behavior of society towards abuse victims. People only use words as an expression but do not come for actual help. Nobody claims to be there for the victim instead they keep on carrying meaningless conversations which are not aimed in actually bettering off the conditions of the abuse victims. The word ‘Poem’ expresses the same notion of just using words but offering no help for the injured bodies.
The poem I will be analyzing will be “Uncoiling” by Pat Mora. The theme the author is portraying is the personification of a tornado . It has a dark/fearful/grim tone as she describes the storm that is accruing. The author is using similes, and personification to convey the theme. The very first figurative language used in the poem is personification.
The Silent Killer Explication: “Alzheimer’s” by Kelly Cherry was published in 1997 during a time of personal struggle for Cherry and her dad. This short, free verse poem consists of twenty nine perplexing lines. The poet’s nontraditional placement of line breaks cause some ideas to fall off in mid-sentence, while others never complete the thought. This creates enjambments which mimic the disease’s confusing nature.
The different key features also plays an important role for example the tone that is being formed by the lyrical voice that can be seen as a nephew or niece. This specific poem is also seen as an exposition of what Judith Butler will call a ‘gender trouble’ and it consist of an ABBA rhyming pattern that makes the reading of the poem better to understand. The poem emphasizes feminist, gender and queer theories that explains the life of the past and modern women and how they are made to see the world they are supposed to live in. The main theories that will be discussed in this poem will be described while analyzing the poem and this will make the poem and the theories clear to the reader. In this song, the speaker is portrayed as a man who is hurting from his past relationship and so he tries to figure out what made things change and where they went wrong. Throughout the song the speaker reflects on how he was feeling while they were still together and now that they are apart. The song was written as a message to the antagonist, the woman that the speaker loved, and now, is no longer with; he wants answers and he wants her to know how he feels and just how much she hurt him. The speaker lets us know that the pain he is feeling from this broken love of theirs is internal by stating, “To hear that tears me up inside and to see you cuts me like a knife” (Poison).
