INTRODUCTION
We all should be allowed the freedom to do whatever we want with our lives. Marijuana should be legalized in Nigeria which could help in the development growth of the country. Marijuana is obtained from the cannabis plant intended for use as a psychoactive drug or medicine. Countries which have legalized marijuana have seen improvements in so many areas such as revenues, employment and crime rates and also health care systems. Legalizing marijuana will help a country like Nigeria exceedingly. Marijuana use in Nigeria should be legalized for both medicinal and casual. Authorizing the use will help Nigeria’s economy, increase in employment rate and decrease in crime rate, medicinal use will also help the health care system. Disallowing

“Several reports put Nigeria’s unemployment rate at about 24 per cent; and 60 per cent of the country’s population are youths, translating to about 80 million Nigeria youths. Youth unemployment rate is over 50 per cent; about 64 million Nigeria youths are unemployed. To think that there are 64 million able body human beings without means of any livelihood is mind boggling. For a nation without any social programs – welfare or unemployment stipend, these 64 million Nigerians live each day looking to survive by all means necessary including involvements in violent criminal acts that constantly threaten the security of the populace” (www.businessdayonline.com). This is very pitiful considering the fact that the country is enthroned with a lot of human and natural resources which is more than enough to provide jobs for the youth. The Legalization of marijuana should help in the increase of employment. In Nigeria marijuana is consumed by 22 per cent of the people (NBF News 22nd November 2010). From the NDLEA (National Drug Law Enforcement Agency) statistics in Nigeria, drug offences had galloped to an alarming level in ten years. In 1990 there were 13 drug prosecutions, which skyrocketed to 1720 incidents in 2008 and 1571 cases in 2009. (NBF News 22nd November 2010). Authorizing the use of the drug will create fewer incidents and save money. Employment rates will …show more content…
The system also covers the machinery put in place by government for the administration and collection of such taxes. The federally collectable taxes in Nigeria include the petroleum profit tax (PPT), the company’s income tax (CIT), customs and exercise duty and the value added tax (VAT). Though VAT is managed by an agency of the federal government the bulk of the proceeds go to the state governments. The tax which has direct and immediate impact on the average individual is of course, the personal income tax (PIT). It is however not covered in the discussion because the bulk of PIT is derived from the states and accrues to the states of derivation. Each state has its independent machinery for PIT administration and collection. PIT revenue accruable to the federal government comprises PIT derived from residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), armed forces personnel and staff of diplomatic missions”(Okafor, Regina G 2012). Tax revenue refers to compulsory exchange to the central government for public purposes. Certain compulsory transfers such as fines, penalties, and most social security augmentations are excluded. (worldbank.org). According to World Bank from 2010-2014 Nigeria’s tax revenues was at 1.6% of the GDP which is very low for country trying to achieve economic stability. Ten months after the sales marijuana was approved the
Legalizing a drug that’s been illegal for decades seems intimidating and nerving but if we instead focus on all the good that comes from legalization, we just may be taking a step towards the right
The argument and proposals by Larissa Ducatti Flister on how to bolster the Canadian economy through legalization and taxation of marijuana is provides enough fiscal evidence, supported by articles on the effects on Canadian society the criminalization of marijuana has had over the past years. While she contends the economic windfall of taxing marijuana is a benefit to the Canadian economy she also shows that government oversight will ensure greater safety to the users and thereby further cut costs to the government by reduced medical and emergency charges. The information clearly supports her claims about the societal benefits and indicates that crime would be reduced from prosecuting people for use and possession of marijuana. This would
Nigeria’s economic prospects were what fueled the passion of most politicians from both the North and South of Nigeria. This meant that when Nigeria finally gained independence these politicians made sure that there was no room for outside interference with how the country’s economy was run. Therefore, to understand the reason for the economical difference between Northern and Southern Nigeria in the fifteen years following independence one would have to examine the financial decisions and events that set Nigeria’s economy on a path that was nothing short of disappointing by the end of
Legalizing marijuana can make the state some money and there are many benefits to it. Legalizing marijuana won’t benefit at all for the big corrupt pharmaceutical companies, if the cannabis is passed as a drug for health issues. Maybe that’s why lawmakers haven’t maybe won’t pass the law to legalize Marijuana. Yes the companies can get involved but then somehow it will get corrupt and won’t benefit the citizens.
Many in favor of legalization would state that marijuana has minimal health risks, is not addictive, can treat many major illnesses. One interesting statistics suggests that the legalization of medical marijuana actually lowers the abuse or experimentation of marijuana use in youth. Also, legalization of marijuana in all states suggests an overall decline in crime rates. One can assume that legalization would provide necessary medical treatments for those who need it, less abuse of marijuana use, and a lower crime rate involving drugs. It has been said that marijuana is safer than many other drugs that are already legalized, and marijuana has never killed anyone from an overdose.
Since marijuana was legalized there have been dramatic results. States that allow the use of marijuana have increased the public’s awareness of the drug’s effects. After an increase in public awarness, many people are setting the drug aside due to long-term effects. If other drugs were made legal in the United States and their long-term and short-term effects were taught, it is very likely that there would be a decrease in their use. People are less inclined to get hooked onto drugs when they realize it could kill them.
As a nation we have come to point where we must take a unified stand on the issue of marijuana. Since 1937 the drug has been deemed illegal by the U.S. government but over the best decade, people have been pushing for the decriminalization of the cannabis plant. As a non drug user, i have researched the internet in search of unbiased information regarding the drugs health, economic, and crime influences on society. The fruits of my labor have brought me to the undisputable conclusion that our continued restriction on possession and use of the drug not only violates the liberties of U.S. citizens, but it also is costing Americans Billions of dollars, and something, our lives.
But, did you know that all of these issues can be fixed if marijuana was legalized in all 50 states? Although many people think that marijuana is a horrible drug, there any many benefits that we as American’s can receive from marijuana. Whether it be from taking the drug yourself, or just supporting it in general. First of all, marijuana has been proven in many, many different medical lab studies to help those who suffer from cancer, seizures, everyday pain, and even anxiety. There are different forms of marijuana and also many different ways that the drug can be used, from smoking to an oil.
Although there is a chance for addiction, medical marijuana should be legalized in all states because it has accumulating health benefits, is administering relief to pain, and is less threatening than most opioids and
The legalization of marijuana would create an increase in jobs because it will create a new industry. It can create many businesses related to marijuana such as spas, textiles, paper, marijuana dispensaries, and many others. All of these will help boost the economy. The only reason it was banned was because of a man named William Randolph Hearst wanted to eliminate a textile competitor because he was using hemp to create his textiles. Hearst was big in the media so he launched a marijuana prohibition movement and later got marijuana banned in Congress.
One of these ways is the legalization of cannabis. Alcohol and cannabis act as substitutes. Although this has not been fully demonstrated, people are likely to use cannabis instead of alcohol. To the extent that the legality of cannabis causes less alcohol consumption, it is likely to make society safer due to the fact that alcohol leads to violence, causing weakness and many other dangerous behaviours that have been presented by criminals. Similarly, the reduction of crime is about weakening drug cartels, which at this time take their source of income away.
Today the demands are changing in different states. In States such as Colorado and Washington, marijuana has been legalized for recreational use. This move raised several questions as far as decriminalization of marijuana is concerned. Besides portraying the US in a bad light, legalization of marijuana for recreation increases the risk of developing mental problems, increases government expenditure on public health, jeopardizes the future of children, and is a gateway to other dangerous drugs. Increased health problems and public health expenditure-
Marijuana, also known as Cannabis, is derived from the Cannabis plant and is used commonly for either recreational or medical purposes. Marijuana is composed of chemicals such as tetrahydrocannabinol (HTC, and over eighty cannabinoids. Marijuana is acknowledged for providing smokers with a “high” feeling. Since the twentieth century, this illicit drug has been banned across the world. However, over the past few years studies have been conducted on marijuana and the results show that it can actually be helpful in many different areas of society.
It was made illegal in the 1930’s for the same reasons as alcohol, because it was believed that it was going to do harm to society. As years have gone by, it is obvious that a mistake was made. The fact that marijuana was made illegal has created numerous problems for the United States that on the long run could have been easily avoided. Countries in different parts of the world and some states within the United States have already legalized marijuana and they have all shown positive outcomes out of their decisions. Although marijuana is illegal in majority of the states, legalizing marijuana for recreational use would bring about social and economical reforms that would help deter crime in the country, increase the amount of money the government makes, and also help people that are medically in need of the drug.
In recent years in Belize, decriminalization of 10 grams or less of Marijuana is one of the most controversial subjects. Marijuana is one of the most commonly used illicit drug in Belize. Marijuana, since its discovery, has been used as a recreational drug by many individuals. Although Marijuana is an illegal drug in Belize, “it is very much a part of many Belizean’s lifestyles and it is use mainly by young people” (NIH, 2017). With the new amendments to the Misuse of Drugs Act, an adult will now be able to possess and smoke up to 10 grams of marijuana in the privacy of his/her home and in someone’s house or in a hotel room with the consent of the owner.
