Cairn Energy was found in the year 1981 by former international Rugby player, Sir Bill Gammell. Earlier its operations were limited to USA but as soon as it was listed in the London Stock Exchange in 1988, Cairn Energy developed its base area in UK and emerged as one of the leading oil producing companies in UK. It had a series of discoveries commencing from 1993 in Gulf Mexico, Bangladesh in 1996 to trade petroleum in the year 1994. Cairn India explored the gas field named Lakshmi in 2000.The success of exploration in areas of Rajasthan added a feather in its cap.

It is a kind of fossil fuel as it is formed from the organic remains of decomposed material and is taken straight out of ground. Crude oil are either light (light coloured liquid) or heavy (solid black colour). It is also categorised into sweet and sour depending upon the quantity of sulphur it contains.
When layers of plants, gases and animals are buried and exposed to high pressure and heat, a fossil fuel is formed which is termed as natural gas. It is a hydrocarbon that contains highest percentage of methane and lower percentages of nitrogen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide.
Cairn India makes use of Mangala development pipeline (MDP) which is an insulated one that transfers the crude oil from the oil basins to the markets. It is world's longest pipeline that starts from central processing terminal and travels through a number of districts of Rajasthan and Gujarat.
