The southern colonies were all agriculturally based but they had different structures due to how and by whom each was founded. Jamestown, Virginia and the Carolinas were structured very much on a hierarchy like the English feudal system. They had large plantation owners who were like the lords in England. They were dependent upon slaves and indentured servants (sort of like debtors). Even though the West Indies were also dominated by plantations, there was still a separation because it was French controlled.
In the mid 1700's, a German by the name of Gottlieb Mittelberger boarded a ship bound for the colonies. He had gained passage by signing off as an indentured servant. The trip a crossed the Atlantic Ocean was and awful journey. There was hardly any room on the ship, there were diseases by the dozen, the food was horrible, and there was hardly any fresh water. When the voyage had ended, Mittelberger had to wait to leave the ship until someone bought him as a servant.
The southern states included Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. These colonies were part of the original 13 that settled in the Americas. The geography included coastal plains, hilly areas and lots of forests. In addition too, the colonies were bordering the Atlantic Ocean. This allowed for two things, a food source (fish) and it also allowed implement mercantilism to happen such as trading with Europe and gaining a profit or trading in the triangular trade.
The three colonies Middle Southern and New England colonies had there own form of living, the colonies were found before the 1700s. In the 1600s was when the colonies were found. There are a lot of differences and similarities between the Southern and Middle colonies. One similarity is the diversity of people they both had immigrants Southern had scottish, irish, and german. Middle had other kinds of immigrants.
There were very few slaves in the middle colonies whereas the south had more slaves to the need of labor for their field and plantations. These slaves were forced to work, separate the cotton and tobacco and keep the field organized so their masters could make more money. The middle colonies did not find this particular work as useful being more farm land colonies. When observing these colonies it is very obvious that these colonies differ in many ways.
Throughout the era of exploration and colonization, British America evolved into three distinctive areas: the Southern/Chesapeake colonies, the Middle Colonies, and the New England Colonies. Each region was colonized due to different motives, exported different commodities, and developed distinct social structures. The principal motivation for settling the Southern and Chesapeake colonies was the promise of riches such as gold. The English Crown and colony proprietors saw the gold and silver that the Spanish conquistadors had procured in South and Central America and sought to increase their revenue by establishing colonies with profitable mines as well.
The North, on the other hand, grew more staple crops and used all means of transport for trade. The Market Revolution caused the differences to deepen, as the Southern plantation owners were reluctant to experience change. Why should they since things had
The treatment of slaves between the North and the South was drastically different. Slaves in the North typically lived in the same house as their master and worked by themselves, or in small groups (pg. 94). Slaves in the South tended to live in large plantations in which they were housed in plantation outbuildings (pg. 104). The difference between the North and the South in housing and working environment had a direct effect on the integration of African Americans into their new American society. When they were housed in the North with their masters and had limited exposure to other slaves, they tended to adopt the ways of their masters.
There were many differences between the North and the South. For instance, the South were very agricultural as opposed to the North which were industrial. The South used cheap labor in the form of slaves, whereas the North had workers do their jobs in factories at a faster pace. Because of sectionalism, competition between the north and the south began to increase.
The New England colonies were first founded in the last 16th to 17th century as a sanctuary for differing religious groups. New England was made up of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. New Hampshire, however, was formed for economic reasons instead of religious ones. The Chesapeake region, which is made up of the colonies of Maryland and Virginia, was founded by the British colonies for the purpose of farming. However, by the 1700’s, despite both being settled by Englishmen, New England and the Chesapeake region had developed differently.
The southern colony and New England Colony had many differences. The New England colony was based more in manufacturing while the southern colony was about agriculture as far as their economy. One big difference is that New England colony didn’t believe in slavery like the southern colonies believed. Slaves and indentured servants were the backbone of the Southern economy. They did much of the labor work for the southern colonies cash crops.
In the southern colonies the main people that inhabited the area were Catholics and protestants. The southern colonies ended up becoming excessively dependent on a plantation company that required slavery. Slavery was not a great solution to the labor problem but because a large portion or people owned a lot slaves and since that ownership was viewed as their wealth they were loathed to give up those slaves without financial compensation. Slavery was allowed in New England but very few people owned slaves. The Northern Colonies decided to take the weakling way out.
The 13 Colonies are broken down into 3 parts, Middle, Southern, and New England Colonies. There were many similarities and differences between all of the 13 Colonies. Many of them ranging from their climate and geography to the role women and African Americans played. A variety of people came from all around the world to the 13 Colonies for many different reasons. In the Middle Colonies, there was a very diverse population.
There were considerable differences between the North, Middle and Southern regions. The New England climate has four seasons. The climate of the Northern colonies was mild with short summers. Northern colonies have long, cold and snowy winters, however, less disease than the Southern colonies and Middle colonies. In contrast with the New England, the Southern colonies have the very warm climate.
The north has Bad farmland therefore they didn't have great agriculture. South has great farmland which meant they had a very good economy for agriculture and cash crops and much more.
