The reality of food surplus in Japan is “approximately 20 millions livings are below the poverty line”. It means that there is always one person who is having a hard time to even have something to eat in every six people. This fact is continually shocking me and it is still difficult for me to believe that one of the most developed countries, Japan is actually facing a lack of food surplus. What made me start to be interested in the food waste was when I was eating out with my friends 4 years ago. The restaurant we went was Shakeys where customers are allowed to have as much food as they want within a limited time, 90 minutes, so the people tend to get much food than they can actually eat. I do clearly remember when I saw a waiter cleaning up the table after customers left and throwing so much uneaten food into a garbage can directly. Also, I was so mad at the customers who just left there without finishing up their meals at all. I never forget how much it was shocking me and I thought it was exactly the reality of our food problem. After I ran into it, I decided to start acting and research the actual issue of what Japan recently has faced.This is the beginning of my desire which I want to get to know
Essay 1 Every year about a third of what the world produces is wasted. This equates to 2.9 trillion pounds of food. The wastage comes from our homes, restaurants, and even the farmers who produce it. Food wastage is an epidemic with dangerous outcomes; from deforestation to the draining of our fresh-water bodies, the population is in trouble.
“Food, Inc.” is a documentary about the production of food that many people do not know about. The purpose of the film was to bring awareness of the industrial food production hoping that viewers will make better choices when eating. It was an interesting film because it showed footages of farms, slaughterhouses and food packaging factories, things that some people might not be aware of because it is not usually covered in the news. Aristotle’s means of persuasion was used in this film to demonstrate the main points. Ethos was used throughout the film.
A barren wasteland consisting of no healthy food options, or even a market where you can at least have a choice on what you eat, seems to be impossible to come by. Fast food and convenience stores along with gas stations have become toxic oasis’s in these deserts. Such stores prove to be the only markets in the area that supply food. Choi then quotes the Director of food studies at New York University, providing relevancy and authenticity to her work. The statement also establishes a link between what we eat and how it connects to particular memories and places in our minds. Moving on, the article is divided into six different subheadings. Each subheading explains the origin of indigenous food in different countries and what that denotes particular culture. Broadly speaking, food is necessary for survival, signifies status denotes pleasure, brings communities together and is essential for humanity.
$ 31 billion worth of food is trashed every year in Canada. We on average throw out 1 in 5 bags of groceries. Many commercial companies and our government are ignoring this problem while the rest of the world has started to take action. Behind a Walmart store there is roughly 12 bins of consumable food thrown out. Not into the compost but into the garbage.
In the world, there are one billion people undernourished and one and a half billion more people overweight. In this day and age, where food has become a means of profit rather than a means of keeping people thriving and healthy, Raj Patel took it upon himself to explore why our world has become the home of these two opposite extremes: the stuffed and the starved. He does so by travelling the world and investigating the mess that was created by the big men (corporate food companies) when they took power away from the little men (farmers and farm workers) in order to provide for everyone else (the consumers) as conveniently and profitably as possible. In his book Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System, Patel reveals his findings and tries to reach out to people not just as readers, but also as consumers, in hopes of regaining control over the one thing that has brought us all down: the world food system.
In world the food industry is marked as great diversity and variety in terms of both presentation and flavor. For a country’s economic development an important role is played by the food industry of that country. One of the greatest food industries is Publix and I am so great full to be part of it. While working at Publix I discovered that how people and food are connected. And working as a clerk at Publix I contribute to people and food connection by making sure there is no unsafe food, check expiry date of a product, broken lid etc.
The sociological imagination on food In this assignment I am going to talk about the sociological imagination on food and the aspects it brings with it. Before starting that large process I firstly will explain what the social imagination is and what the key points of the imagination are in able to fully understand the topic; food and its history, biography, and the relation it has in society. This is my first assignment for the module understanding contemporary society so please bear with me as I will do my best to explain it in a logic manner so everybody can understand it.
The Food Industry The food industry is the worldwide diversified industry which has to do with anything relevant with food from food education to marketing but principally the industry produces and or provides food to essentially all people on the planet. The only people who are excluded from the food industry are self-sustaining farmers and hunter-gatherers. It is one of the largest industries in the world and continues to grow because people need food and the population is increasing every day. In America, the food industry possesses such an important role, yet there are so many problems within the industry which is ruining the society as we know it.
“Food waste is an atrocity that is reducible, if not completely avoidable.” -Stephen Hough a famous composer once said. Food is a precious item many people do not have access to. Yes, you may have a surplus amount of food, but one should think about how much of that food do you waste. That food could go to the poor, unassuming and haggard people in society.
Japanese foods had developed over the past 2,000 years ago with strong influences from both China and Korea. However, only in the last 300-400 years, all the influences come together to make up today’s Japanese cuisine. Rice was among the major influences that introduced from Korea around 400 B.C and within a hundred years it had become the staple food in Japan (Takeda, 2014). During Yayoi period, the migrating tribes from Korea that settled in Japan passed on their techniques for rice cultivation to the Japanese. Soybeans and wheat which had become an essential part of Japanese cooking were introduced from China soon after rice.
The world is experiencing a dilemma today. Many people suffer from hunger, malnutrition, and other problems caused by the lack of sufficient food. However, many other people buy or order excessive foods and waste a lot. In my community, food waste is much more serious than food shortage, and it is easy to see that people throw foods in the dustbin and the foods indeed are still eatable. Food waste is a serious problem.
Introduction People tend to consume a lot, when there is consumption, there is waste – and that waste becomes a big problem that needs taken care of, which costs a lot of time, space and resources. If not managed, in turn, the world that we live in will become a hazardous place for all living things. According to the World Bank, people throughout the world, “spend $2.3 trillion a year on food and beverages alone” (Global Consumption Database, 2018), that is quite a lot. In addition to that, the world count mentions that, “we throw out over 50 tons of household waste every second. A number that will double by 2030”
Time passes really fast and I have already worked as a part-time waiter in this Japanese restaurant for two and a half years. Today is my last day at work and I have a lot to share, not only the most memorable experience I had while working, but also what I have learnt since I chose this job. I remembered that why I chose Japanese restaurant is due to my curiosity on Japanese culture and cuisine. I remember that I was energetic and excited as I reckon that being surrounded by all sorts of Japanese food should be fun.
