The early people of Jamestown have not fared well throughout history. I can see from the historical fiction book Blood on the River and Chief Powhatan's speech to Captain John Smith that the commoners endured due to a number of social and environmental problems. However, in my opinion, social problems were primarily responsible for more damage. I think it's because the colonists didn't cooperate well and showed no respect for the commoners.
Well many colonists died because of their water supply, their relationship with the natives, and because of their knowledge of survival. These factor lead to early death for most of the colonist. The water supply for Jamestown was brackish, or filthy, and lead to disease.
Jamestown and Plymouth can be similar and different depending on the ways they’re looked at. Both establishments were built on hard work and resourceful people; however, there are some variations between the two. Although both settlements had similar impacts on present day America, there were still differences between the setbacks they had, along with the reasoning for establishing these settlements. One of the differences between these two settlements were early setbacks. The people of Jamestown were a group of inexperienced workers who were unwilling to cooperate which led to bickering and disagreements, this led to many problems.
There was a drought that lasted 1605-1614 which was the longest period Jamestown suffered (Document B). The lack of rain really affected the colonist because their crops didn't grow which meant that they could no longer trade with the Powhatan indians and because they had no food to feed themselves. Some colonist even considered cannibalism because they were so hungry. Also the drought left no water for the colonist to drink, so some died of dehydration. One winter of 1609-16010 (Document B) affected and killed many of the colonist, this happened because it left the colonist starving, it was too cold to do anything, and because it froze the crops and killed them too.
Once they set sail for this business venture the people had many hardships including harsh winters, lack of fresh water, the spread of diseases, and they were constantly being attacked by the Algonquin Indians. “But now was all our provisions spent, the sturgeon gone, all help abandoned, each hour expecting the fury of the savages.” (John Smith 5) In this quote you can get a sense of frustration and anger the people from Jamestown experienced after being on this voyage for so long and getting surprise attacks and generally everything that they were going through. Only sixty of the colonist had survived the harsh winter that will forever be known as the starving times. Sir Thomas Gates and Sir George Summers arrived in May 1610 with 150 people and some supplies from the Bermudas only to find the walking anomalies of Jamestown. Sir Thomas Gates took over as the new governor and order the immediate abandonment of Jamestown. They labored into June to build 4 ships to carry them all back to England. Once all were boarded and sailing down the James river, they spotted another ship headed their way.

As the 100 settlers came across Chesapeake Bay on May 14th, 1607. They named this settlement “Jamestown”. Shortly after they settled, Native Americans attacked and killed some colonists. Near the same time, people are getting sick from disease, which leads to the winter “Starving Time”, taking the lives of many starved. So, why did so many Jamestown Colonists die?
With their new environments all of the colonists were introduced to new diseases. Poor living conditions, malnutrition, and native diseases caused many fatalities throughout the colonies. Illness ran rampant through each colony, which took out many workers. Jamestown and Plymouth were able to overcome each struggle and become the foundation of the New World.

While the colonization of the America’s was negative for many reasons such as the spread of illnesses, and the forcing of religion upon natives, it was also beneficial to the Native’s because it allowed them to have better weapons and to have different foods and goods in their lives. The Europeans exposed the Natives to many new diseases once they colonized the new areas they discovered. The Europeans greatly impacted the family life and religion of the inhabitants of the areas they found. There was also a lot of exchange going on during the conquest of the Americas because the Natives were excited by the new gadgets they had never seen before that the Europeans brought over.
