Last session on Saturday is an “input” process for me. On the one hand, I was learning how to install and use Embark software. Unfortunately, I have trouble with opening the software in a correct way. The presenter Ms. Carmen is a very patient person. She took a photo of my screen and said that she will contact me once she figured out the problem.
The topic of elder abuse that gives me a deep impression. Elder abuse refers to intentional or neglectful acts by a caregiver or “trusted” individual that lead to, or may lead to, harm of a vulnerable elder ("Administration on Aging (AoA)."). I haven’t realized the seriousness of this problem until I got to know that the risk of death is 300 times greater for elders who have been mistreated, compared with those who haven’t been mistreated (quotes from the presenter). According to EJE, almost 90% of elder abuse and neglect occurs with a known perpetrator, such as family member, and two-thirds of perpetrators are adult children or spouses (EJE). That was a chilling fact to me. Based on my further research, I found that the forms of elder abuse are not limited to the physical assault (slapping, bruising, or restraining by physical or chemical means) and financial exploitation, such as the illegal taking, misuse, or concealment of funds, property, or assets of a senior for personal benefit. At present, I think the most common elder abuse would be emotional abuse, which means “inflicting mental pain, anguish, or distress on an elder person through verbal or nonverbal acts,” like humiliating, intimidating, or threatening (ELE). Emotional abuse makes it difficult for government to enact laws to protect elderly people. For example, in China, although many laws are in place to protect the rights of elderly people; for instance, China's first law on the older

Describe the case in detail A 51 years old schizophrenic Bert Montoya was placed to live at Dorothea’s home by her social worker, Judy Moise. According to Judy, Dorothea told her that she was in the 70s and she actually was a nurse during WWII. She was known for donate money and cloths to charity and employee people in parole. She welcomed everyone in her home.
Many people are supported in their homes by people who work along side the health and social care service such as social workers, nursers ,doctor and care givers or they may get support from their family members and friends. An elderly person may choose to stay in their own homes instead of a residential care home while seeking help and support from others, however this can lead to potential opportunities for abuse happening to the person who Is being looked after. When an individual is getting support at home by a carer, the individual being cared for is vulnerable and defenseless and therefor this makes them a target for abuse, another example is abuse by strangers, when an elderly person lives alone they are at risk of people calling at the door and then gaining access to their homes, they may steal items from them or mistreat them or cause intimidation. A person who is vulnerable and living alone are at risk of physical and sexual because there is no one there to stop this abuse from happening.
Physical abuse is exactly what anyone could imagine, it involves the physical act of beating, choking, or even sexually assaulting an elderly individual. This might occur in a situation where a caregiver becomes frustrated with an elderly individual for not performing a task the caregiver desires, or could simply be a case where someone takes advantage of an elderly person who may not be capable of retaliating. Psychological abuse is when threats, intimidation, and verbal aggression are used on an elderly person. Psychological abuse can be seen when a decision needs to be made by an elderly individual. One may threaten or intimidate an elder to persuade them to make a desired decision, and the elder would listen in fear or trust that the decision is of the best interest.
The United States government is doing a surprisingly little amount for the million of elderly who are being abused everyday. An affective abuse policy increasing elderly protection services is immensely needed. The public should also be informed about elderly abuse, and the individuals who commit the crime of abusing the elderly should have stricter punishments. People in society can help towards pushing for a more goal driven elder justice policy. In the article, “The Elderly Must Be Protected From Abuse,” author Robert B. Blancato explains seven goals which should be addressed towards elderly justice.
At Adult Protective Services majority of our work involves investigation of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. At Adult Protective Services our job is to protect the vulnerable elderly population, as well as the population that have disabilities. “Only APS is statutorily authorized and responsible for investigating elder and vulnerable adult abuse and taking steps to protect the victims, and it is generally only APS that helps the most frail and incapacitated older persons”(Quin, 2012, p.68). When abuse is suspected, a case worker will reach out to all parties involved, such as the alleged victim, alleged perpetrator, and all collaterals. Unlike many other professions, case worker are not required to have any written consent to speak with
Hillier and Barrow (2015), associate problems of caregiving with the responsibility itself, the caregivers personal health, role strains, strained family relationships, ect. With all of this strain on an informal caregiver it seems most beneficial to the caregiver and the elderly individual to consider admittance in to an assisted living facility. Once a basis has been established as to why an elderly person is admitted in to an assisted living facility, further insight shall be established to denote what is considered elder abuse. In this movie, Life and Death in Assisted Living Facilities, several
Elder abuse takes on many forms ranging from physical to psychological, and a wide variety of different forms of abuse and neglect. In America alone, it is estimated that four million older people are victims of some type of abuse/and or neglect yearly. Specialists have speculated that for every case reported, there will be around twenty three cases that are not reported According to Elder Abuse and Neglect: In Search of Solutions, elder abuse can be defined as the infliction of physical, emotional/psychological, sexual or financial farm to another adult. This includes neglect, whether it be intentional or unintentional, by a caregiver.
After reading the articles above I was shocked to hear about the extent of elderly abuse. It stunned me how many people were victims of this problem. One thing that I was surprised about and confused me was, If there is all this evidence proving that these people were abused, Why had nothing been done to stop these people before it was too late. In the second paragraph the author spoke of Marie Espinoza, a victim of elderly abuse. Oliva, her daughter was the first one to notice signs of abuse.

In a world of a rapidly aging population, there are many roles now associated with caregiving. Some are caregivers to family at home, while others are caregivers for nursing homes and others facilities. Shockingly, elder abuse is a common occurrence within elderly caregiving situations. In an article written by Sherri Snelling in 2015, we see two cases of elder abuse- one in which Jean Kasem neglected her husband, radio DJ Casey Kasem, and another where Linda Maureen Raye refused her mother adequate care, which led to her death. Both of these are extreme examples of elder abuse, but more mild forms of this happen every day.

(Davenport,2015) Economic abuse is when your spouse or intimate partner uses money or finances to bully and hurt you. How, elderly and disabled people are the most common targets. They sometimes have physical or mental limitations that also make them an easier target. This type of abuse involves a decrease in self-esteem and decreases the ability to operate independently.
Elder abuse can be referred to as a single or repeated act or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. Elderly people often get abuse by people who should be their protector and carer, in most circumstances many elderly adults are abused in their own homes, in relatives’ homes, and even in facilities responsible for their care. If you suspect that an elderly person is at risk from a neglectful or overwhelmed caregiver, or being preyed upon financially, it’s important to speak up. Learning about the warning signs of elder abuse, what the risk factors are, and how you can prevent and report the problem it’s very vital in protecting the elderly from abuse, some of these abuse are; • Not caring for someone property (neglect) • Pressuring
