Last session on Saturday is an “input” process for me. On the one hand, I was learning how to install and use Embark software. Unfortunately, I have trouble with opening the software in a correct way. The presenter Ms. Carmen is a very patient person. She took a photo of my screen and said that she will contact me once she figured out the problem.
The topic of elder abuse that gives me a deep impression. Elder abuse refers to intentional or neglectful acts by a caregiver or “trusted” individual that lead to, or may lead to, harm of a vulnerable elder ("Administration on Aging (AoA)."). I haven’t realized the seriousness of this problem until I got to know that the risk of death is 300 times greater for elders who have been mistreated, compared with those who haven’t been mistreated (quotes from the presenter). According to EJE, almost 90% of elder abuse and neglect occurs with a known perpetrator, such as family member, and two-thirds of perpetrators are adult children or spouses (EJE). That was a chilling fact to me. Based on my further research, I found that the forms of elder abuse are not limited to the physical assault (slapping, bruising, or restraining by physical or chemical means) and financial exploitation, such as the illegal taking, misuse, or concealment of funds, property, or assets of a senior for personal benefit. At present, I think the most common elder abuse would be emotional abuse, which means “inflicting mental pain, anguish, or distress on an elder person through verbal or nonverbal acts,” like humiliating, intimidating, or threatening (ELE).
