Tourism websites are created to advertise specific locations and to aid customers in their decision of where to travel. In order for a customer to travel to the destination advertised, these websites have to grab and maintain a customer’s attention. The images capture exquisite moments of Hawaii that could be defined as adventurous, pleasurable, and/or astonishing; in addition, the accompanying text delivers a well-thought description of each image by integrating visual imagery within each section. With these specific images and well-thought descriptions displayed on the tourism website for Hawaii, a representation of how people should imagine Hawaii is formed. Even with the usage of visual imagery and pathos, the website does not portray a deceitful message to their diverse audience; it is important for the website to maintain a truthful message in order to convince and appeal to such a diverse audience. Hawaii’s tourism website utilizes rhetorical devices through textual and visual strategies, which will persuade and attract their targeted audience.
Within the “Family Fun in Hawaii” section of the tourism website, they incorporate pathos in the picture displayed below the title of the section and use visual imagery, along with vivid diction throughout the text to convince a family-oriented person to vacation in Hawaii. In this section, there is a photo of a family on a boat enjoying the view off in the distance. The image establishes a positive emotional appeal (pathos) when you notice the family smiling and laughing as a whole, but the image does not present to us what the family is observing. The diverse audience is able to be persuaded to travel to Hawaii because the website addresses what family oriented people and devoted couples are searching for. Committed couples are traveling to Hawaii for the romantic lifestyle, while family oriented people are traveling to Hawaii for attachments, such as memories and identities. The text in the “Romance” section displayed romantic imagery with descriptive diction, while the pictures displayed devoted couples. The rhetorical devices allow couples to visualize what their wedding or honeymoon could potentially be. The pictures of the devoted couples establishes an emotional appeal that most individuals would want to experience during their wedding or honeymoon. To persuade families, they used the same tactics, but appealed to their longing for a travelable place that they can call home and to their longing for family traditions to be created.
