Content shown on television stations have previously been met with criticism on many occasions; this is partly due to people trying to uphold their cultural morals that they have been raised with. As shown in the 4th season of Game of Thrones, a scheming queen, is in an incestuous relationship with her brother, and is forced to have sex with him, despite her persistent refusal. This scenario including incestuous rape was met with heavy controversy about where HBO should draw the line. Television shows are constantly trying to push the lines of content, but some incidents are too graphic and are also allowing viewers to receive the wrong message. In the Game of Thrones rape depiction, many members in the audience may have cultural morals that …show more content…
There are flaws to regulating and making Game of Thrones more conservative. Game of Thrones is a fantasy world and should be treated as such, though the topics are related to everyday life in modern society, the topics shown are only for entertainment purposes and should not be taken personally. These actions that the characters take are mainly for story purposes and are used to push the story progress forward. Though Game of Thrones is a fantasy world made for entertainment, it cannot be ignored that the topics depicted throughout the series are not relevant to the real world, and this portrayal of these immoral acts are placing harmful ideas into viewers’ impressionable mind. For this reason, Game of Thrones should be regulated and more conservative towards its audience and it should become more sensitive to the topics that it is portraying and the real life victims of these immoral acts. This regulation of a more conservative Game of Thrones series will have its limitations and will work best if properly introduced. Game of Thrones should be regulated and conserved, but the original series should be available to the viewers who desire a mature experience with a raw story
The reason that I say that is because books are already being censored. Heck Fahrenheit 451 has been censored. What does that tell us about what can happen in the distant the future. I say that there is a good chance that there could be a society like this in the
This could only have been achieved through the strict laws set forth by the Council and the unhesitant consequences that are followed by defiance of the law. As with all dystopian future based novels, it is a prediction of the some worst case scenarios that our world can fall into. As with George Orwell’s 1984 and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, both feared severe censorship in the future.
It also helps convince the idea of the actors actually being their family. The Hound is also an example censorship since it can be programmed to do different commands. “It doesn’t think anything we don’t want it to think” ( Bradbury 25). This is a sign of censorship since they even control the thoughts of the Hounds. They distract the thoughts of people they make them think that what they think is wrong and why they put in the media is the correct
As previously stated, Ray Bradbury deals with some issues of censorship in his book Fahrenheit 451. In this novel the entire population is controlled and censored and things are terrible because of it. As said in the book. “We are living in a time when flowers are trying to live off flowers, instead of growing on food rain and black loam.”. It means we need to read books and learn to truly grow instead of just living off each other.
One modern day example of censorship for a good reason is in Mark Twain’s book, Huckleberry Finn. Several years ago the “n” word was replaced to slave because many people were uncomfortable with how often the word appeared; 219 times to be precise (Moore, M. T., 2011). One of the big reasons the word was replaced was because of teachers complaints about parents and students saying the book was “injurious” and “hurtful” (Moore, M. T., 2011). Alan Gribben, professor of English at Auburn University-Montgomery says “When the younger reader is staring at that word five times on a given page and the instructor is saying, 'Mark Twain didn't mean this and you have to read it with an appreciation of irony,' you're asking a lot of a younger reader (Moore, M. T., 2011).” Another reason why some are pro censorship is because they think certain media can contaminate minds of people (H, 2015).
This being said if people don't want to read something they find obscene they should just stay away from the books with content they don't like. Creating a simple rating system similar to movies or video games to put on the cover of books could change everything. Books would no longer have to be banned; schools could simply only purchase books with certain ratings. Schools would still have to allow kids to read any book they bring from home even if the rating is mature, but they would not have to deal with all of the kids discussing topics that are considered mature. The control of what kids read would then be on the parents, which is the best option for schools and
By true definition, censorship is the suppression and illegalization of speech, public communication, and other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, or politically incorrect as determined by the government in authority. The purpose of censorship is perhaps to protect the people, however, negative outcomes typically follow when this route is taken to control a governed people. Censorship directly attack the main characters of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and George Orwell’s 1984. Although government censorship was perpetuated to create a whole and perfect society, Fahrenheit 451 and 1984 both demonstrate that censorship brought on by the government negatively controls a community’s thoughts, actions, and their people as a whole.
However, this is also a direct violation of the First Amendment, which states that “the commitment to free speech is not the acceptance of only non-controversial expressions that enjoy general approval“ (CliffNotes). Despite the fact that in this society the government has complete control over what people see, hear, and even think, an outcome like this is not theoretically possible. At least, not anytime in the near future. Although, Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 certainly does serve as a good cautionary tale of what could happen if censorship is taken to the extreme.
Censorship has affected this society by making books illegal and making people follow what the government says instead of living for themselves and being happy. Censorship can be dangerous because of the power it can have over people’s minds. If you tell people not to do something long enough, they’ll get used to it and that could lead to ignorance. Another reason why censorship could be so dangerous is because it could lead to a lack of information, an example of this would be in the book Fahrenheit 451, the society in that book isn’t allowed to read books so that leads to them only really knowing what the government tells them to know and nothing else. My final reason for censorship being so dangerous is because it kind of violates freedom
The FCC already has to over see so much, with this reform passed it would make it easier on the employees as they would not have to censor as much. Citizens who believe in this reform would also benefit. T.V Networks would benefit because they would not have to censor and edit as much. If the limitations on what is shown were not as strict it is also let work and stress for the T.V networks. The radio will benefit from this also, the first amendment states freedom of speech and expression.
Not letting your children and even just normal people read something because you don’t see it correct does it make it correct for them not to read that book. Banning and censoring books is keeping the truth while telling lies and holding mankind from moving
Since the television shows make influences on people, their values conveyed in the programs also impact social morality. If the directors of television shows only focus on the entertaining functions of television programs to make profits, the public’s morality will have danger to be lowered
This also means that consumers of Glee acquises the ruling class to have the authority on manipulating their consumption choices. Here, we can see that hegemony in politics can play a huge part in the shaping of a culture and controlling what should be shown in media. This is because, although media resorts to censorship, it lead to a reverse reaction where the audience become more supportive and aware of homosexuality than
Moreover, it triggers certain responses regarding attitude and behavior in the audience. Therefore, it is important to filter or rather watch out the king of media violence our children are exposed to at a tender age and as they grow
Another form of art that some feel should be censored is some novels that are out there like Catcher and the Rye, Harry Potter series, and To Kill a MockingBird again this is just to name a few that are out there. People for censorship mainly want it as a way of protecting their kids and to protect the people who can’t handle those types of art. The main reason for that is people are sometimes afraid that if people play, watch, or see these works they might make them snap and try and imitate what they’ve seen or read in real life. A new research American Psychological Association (APA) has shown that children and young adults who play first person shooter games have been more prone to aggression but not necessarily criminal activity. The same can be said for racy novels that depict killing and
