High Fructose Corn Syrup and Obesity If you could blame one thing for obesity, what would it be? Some scientists argue that it is high fructose corn syrup or H.F.C.S. Others disagree. Scientist has been having debates about the reason of the obesity epidemic. Although high fructose corn syrup may be a contributor to obesity, it is not the main cause. H.F.C.S. may not be the culprit, overeating is one of the most crucial factors of obesity. Most Americans eat portions that are beyond healthy. Studies show that over the last twenty years, food portions in American’s restaurants have doubled or even tripled. This distorted the amount of food people think is healthy for them at home and when eating out. Also, the amount of calories in food that …show more content…
Behavior and environment has a big role to play in obesity too. Studies show that less than 50% of adults in America get a healthy amount physical activity. This means that grownups cannot get enough calories out and end up gaining weight because they choose not to live healthy or they have a disease. Also modern technology influences obesity because it makes labor easier. Computers and televisions keep Americans on the couch all day. Stores even have strollers so that customers don’t have to walk! Behavior is definitely an influence of obesity. Scientist debate that HFCS is the culprit behind America’s fatness; they claim that high fructose corn syrup is addictive and affects a person’s metabolism. HFCS is used often due to being cheap. But high fructose corn syrup is chemically related to cane sugar. Most scientists believe that HFCS cannot be so important to obesity because it isn’t proven. Although HFCS may contribute to obesity, there are more factors that affect a person’s weight. Some people argue that high fructose corn syrup is the reason behind obesity, but overeating, genetics, and environment more greatly affects obesity. There is no
When the 1970s introduced High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), a cheap sweetener alternative to sucrose in a fructose-glucose liquid form (fifty five percent fructose, forty two percent glucose, and three percent saccharides), it brought extensive numbers of health problems with it (Bray, 2004 & Johnson, 2010 ). Prior to the 70’s, on average, sugar contributed to four percent of daily caloric intake, however over the past four and a half decades, this statistic has increased to whopping sixteen percent, leading some scientist to consider it an “addiction” as they observe the sugar substitute wreak havoc on humans’ bodies worldwide (Butler, 2011). Along with hooking those who indulge sweets to it, High Fructose Corn Syrup also leads to obesity:
There are 3 causes of why childhood obesity has increased. First, Most foods have high levels of fructose corn syrup. Fructose corn syrup is defined as “High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a sweetener made from corn found in thousands of foods and beverages on grocery store shelves throughout the United States. HFCS is composed of either 42 percent or 55 percent fructose, with the remaining sugars being primarily glucose and higher sugars.
A few are Maltodextrin, Xanthan Gum, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Glucose, Sucrose, Dextrose, Cane Sugar, Brown Sugar, Table sugar, and Sorghum Syrup, and many more. In addition to that, in a survey I did ___% couldn’t even name 5 different names for sugar. So this proves how we don’t know what we are eating and we don’t care about what it is. What Are The Effects Of Being Obese? Who really cares about being fat, I’ll get made fun of so what?!
No matter what these little thing called High Fructose Corn Syrup is in everything, we can’t go out with out having something with it in it. No one really looks at the labels to see what ingredients they are consuming have. However studies show that “give young healthy adults 0,10,17.5, or 25 percents of their daily calories requirements in a drink sweetened with high fructose corn syrup” (Liebman, 2015). According to Stanhope as he said “the liver turns fructose into triglycerides and sends some of it, along with cholesterol, into the blood” (Liebman, 2015). If high fructose corn syrup is that bad for our bodies then why do companions still put it in their products, why not take it out so we can have a healthier and better world then we do
These are just some of the things that cause people to become obese. Now America is one of the most obese countries in the world. Mainly from people not getting enough exercise. Exercise is a big point why Americans get obese because they sit there and do nothing. On top of
Over the past century, America portion sizes and waistlines have grown exponentially. In 1975 the largest soft drink size was seven ounces, today a child’s size is 12 ounces. Also in the seventies high fructose corn syrup was invented and became a common ingredient in fast foods. Technology has contributed to our laziness and the ease of not leaving your couch to order more food. Obesity is a big problem caused by portion sizes, processed food and sugars, and technology.
The 900 club is a club for people who have reached the weight of 900 pounds or more. Many americans struggle maintaining a healthy weight or are obese. These people who have reached 900 pounds have struggled with weight most of their life and at one point they stopped caring and let it spiral out of control. 60% of americans are overweight and ⅓ of americans are obese. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of health problems Obesity is the result of both biological and psychological factors.
What causes obesity? The answer is obvious, fast food. In a world where the obesity rates are rapidly rising, the biggest question is why? Almost 100% of the population believes that fast food is directly linked to obesity. According to facebook, it is nearly impossible to resist eating fast food.
. . . In this issue of the JCI [Journal of Clinical Investigation], Stanhope and colleagues demonstrate that consumption of fructose-sweetened but not glucose-sweetened beverages for 10 weeks increases de novo lipid synthesis, promotes dyslipidemia, impairs insulin sensitivity, and increases visceral adiposity in overweight or obese adults” (Abstract). Fructose sweetener is another way to say high fructose corn syrup. This study proved that fructose sweetened drinks caused harm to the body and signaled a starting point for diseases such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, insulin difficulties, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and ultimately coronary heart disease. Not only does high fructose cause stress on the body, but fructose can also cause serious
Confusion and debate over sugar and high fructose corn syrup is a large debatable topic. With all the foods and bread products that high fructose corn syrup has slowly found its way into, especially in all the new energy drinks. HFCS is an altered sweetened product. Natural sugar is an entirely unprocessed ingredient, for example, milk, organic product, and vegetables. A standout between the most widely known everyday sugars is fructose, which is found in natural fruit product (Added).
The contribution of each of these factors has been studied, and although genes play an important role in the regulation of body weight, the World Health Organization Consultation on Obesity concluded that behavioral and environmental factors ( sedentary lifestyles with a mixture of too much energy intake) are primarily responsible for the dramatic increase in obesity during the past two decades.
Sugar is the one of the basic ingredients in many products so the daily consumption of sugar is quite high. Sugar is made up of two molecules, glucose and fructose. If too much fructose is taken into the body, the liver turns the energy into liver fat which causes metabolic diseases.
Introduction Nowadays, with the modern technology development, there are more and more different chemistry uses in food industry, like food storage, transportation and many ways which will need food additives to keep food fresh and nutritious. The food additive’s main difference lies in whether it is naturally formed or artifically synthesized. Except from this, China divides food additives into 24 different food additives including flavoring agents, coloring agents, bleaching agent, texturizing agents, miscellaneous additives and so on; they play very important role in our daily life. Recently there is a news titled “Kids ' Use of Artificial Sweeteners Spiked in Recent Years” reported connection between the sugar substitutes and obesity.
Processed foods and beverages are the biggest sources of added sugar (and High fructose) in the diet. Sugar is very unhealthy and can have serious adverse effects on metabolism when consumed in excess. Sugar contains a lot of calories, with no essential nutrients. It also causes tooth decay by feeding the harmful bacteria in the mouth. For people who are inactive and eat a processed food, large amounts of fructose from added sugars get turned into fat in the liver.
It is true sugary foods can be a trigger for weight gain and excessive calorie intake is bad on the human body. Also, on a growing child it is very important for a good stable diet. While these points are valid, there are various ways to balance a healthy diet with occasional fast and or junk food and to avoid obesity and diabetes without blaming the business industry. Obesity is not solely caused from what a person eats. It comes from lack of exercise and eating large portions of unhealthy food in one sitting.
