The Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA), founded in 1982, are the most prestigious film awards in Hong Kong and among the most respected in mainland China and Taiwan. The awards are the Hong Kong equivalent to the American Oscars and the British BAFTAs.
The HKFA, incorporated into Hong Kong Film Awards Association Ltd since December 1993, are currently managed by a board of directors, which consists of representatives from thirteen professional film bodies in Hong Kong. Voting on eligible films for the HKFA is conducted January through March every year and is open to all registered voters, which include local film workers as well as critics, and a selected group of abjudicators.

Though over-size posters of stars set to attend the film ceremony had been set up, they were in a corner where people would only see them if they happened to walk by. The stars in their fine suits were smiling or making cool poses, but seemed lonely due to the lack of attention".

This upswelling of anti-authoritarianism sparked a riot in the streets of Hong Kong on the first day of Chinese New Year. In the last week it has seen a group of students unveil plans for a political party that would seek independence from China for the territory, which was handed back to China in 1997 by the U.K., the former colonial power. Hong Kong authorities have refused to register the independence party.
Due to its subject matter, it’s extremely unlikely that Ten Years will see official release China. Its commercial fate in Hong Kong is also uncertain. Nevertheless, grassroots interest in the film remains strong. With the award, the film’s artistic merits will no doubt be further debated in the months ahead.
