In today’s 21st century, media plays an increasingly vital role in our lives. ‘Media’ is defined as mass communication; transmission of information to a large group of people through mediums such as newspapers, radio and television. It can be debated that media alters attitudes and behaviour, as well as beliefs. Hence, I agree to a full extent that the media is influential in shaping who we are. It will be discussed in this essay how social media is a powerful tool that affects the attitudes and behaviour of adolescents. The essay will further explore how films impact beliefs on religion and the supernatural.
Due to peer pressure in society, the prevalent use of social media alters adolescents’ behaviours and attitudes. Social media networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and even blogs worldwide are often recognized as a powerful tool in having influence over a person. It serves as a platform to voice our personal opinions and comments where not everything is restricted and controlled. In a recent survey conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), it was found that a teen’s choice to use drugs and alcohol are associated with social media. “About 70% of American teenagers between 12 to 17 years old, who spent time on social networking sites were at a higher risk of smoking, drinking and drug usage.” Emily Feinstein, a senior analyst at CASA stated, “Seeing teens partying with alcohol or marijuana on Facebook and other
Believe it or not, religion, which is “the service and worship of God or the supernatural” (Webster) is far more common than the average Joe notices on the surface. A large amount of people wouldn’t see religious aspects in their everyday life except for those they practice and even then, most are limited to a single day if even that. With the proper lens it is possible to gaze deeper into everyday occurrences and see factors such as subliminal meanings and blatant themes that have religious values to accompanying them. This theme of religion in popular culture can be seen popular aspects of everyday life. Many religious institutions see media within popular culture as an avenue to communicate to the mass their message and/or vision.
The main objectives in chapter 9 include the ways media attempt to influence people’s attitudes, beliefs, and/or behavior, ways media technology can be disruptive and have adverse effects on behavior, the positive and negative influences of certain kinds of media, such as advertisements or reality television programs, on self-image. Even though media is a great outlet, media has changed our generation causing effects on self-image and human interactions. Because of its pervasiveness in American culture, the media affects people in both obvious and subtle ways. Modern media comes in many different formats, including newspapers, magazines, television, social media, etc.

Children’s lives have quickly shifted onto the Internet in the twenty-first century. Even the President of the United States has nearly forty thousand Twitter and Instagram posts. Social networks are websites that allow users to interact over the Internet. There are 600 million Facebook users across the globe (Rosenwald 2). 300 million visit Twitter every month (Maney 3).
Social media sites including Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are at their peak when influencing young adults. Ongoing issues, cyberbullying, threats, and hate crimes are being presented through these social media sites and this is one of the multitude of reasons why parents should limit the use of technology for their teenagers. I agree that parents should limit the use of social media for their teenage child, or for any age child, because ongoing use causes lack of exercise, impaired social skills, and harm for threat and violence. Parents should restrict the use of social media sites for their children because it causes a decrease in physical activity. New research is showing a rapid decline in physical activity all around the globe.
Many people think that minors who have access to social media are more involved in activities and have a better social life. However, those who do have access to social media often use it too much as a distraction, and do not focus on important things like school. Minors should not have access to social media because they are not at a mature age yet to be responsible and aware of what they are doing or what they have access to. When a person experiences something new they sometimes get too carried away with it and become addicted, because they enjoy it too much. There was an experiment done by a famous YouTuber where he would message kids on social media with their parents consent, and talk them into meeting up with him.
For years people have played the “blame game” with media and its effects on society. It has been questioned whether the media helps or hurts more in its overall impacts. The media consists of magazines, advertisements, TV shows, and social pages such as Instagram, SnapChat, Twitter, and Facebook, all in which society seems to be addicted to. The real question is, is having all of these sources of media positively or negatively affecting society? Some people blame the media for harming society by causing eating disorders and a low self esteem.
Nevertheless, social media plays a huge role in our society, it connects people all over the world, provides an opportunity to work or study being at home and it gives space for self-expression. Involving in numerous sorts of social media has become a daily activity for most teenagers and grown-ups. According to a survey, 22% of adolescents log on to their preferred social media site more than ten times a
This is because the content of mass media is very powerful and it has become a agent of socialization which can shape people’s behavior or even influence the ways of how people think. There are many agents of socialization that can influence an individual lifestyle and one of the agent is mass media, which means that mass media can affect an individual self-concept, attitudes, or other orientations toward life especially the adolescents. The fact that there was a time when the internet, television and cell phones were considered a necessity but now the mass media seems to be more of a commodity to teenagers, because we can see that most of the adolescents tend to spend more time on the electronic devices rather than going for outdoor activities. Media are platforms of mass communication that can be categorized as either new of traditional media, with new media being forms of communication that make use of technologies such as the Internet, and traditional media being more conventional forms of media such as newspapers. Media, primarily new media, is getting more popular and influential, especially in today’s day and age since we are exposed to it a lot more than in the past and also since media is more easily accessible now. The media can shape our behaviours, perceptions and opinions, and it is important to know how people are influenced and impacted by it. The media can influence someone’s perception of social reality, or perceptions of beauty or even influence people’s behaviours and habits and therefore, the media does shape who we are. One way that the media can shape who we are is by influencing our perception of social reality.
