In today’s 21st century, media plays an increasingly vital role in our lives. ‘Media’ is defined as mass communication; transmission of information to a large group of people through mediums such as newspapers, radio and television. It can be debated that media alters attitudes and behaviour, as well as beliefs. Hence, I agree to a full extent that the media is influential in shaping who we are. It will be discussed in this essay how social media is a powerful tool that affects the attitudes and behaviour of adolescents. The essay will further explore how films impact beliefs on religion and the supernatural.

Due to peer pressure in society, the prevalent use of social media alters adolescents’ behaviours and attitudes. Social media networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and even blogs worldwide are often recognized as a powerful tool in having influence over a person. It serves as a platform to voice our personal opinions and comments where not everything is restricted and controlled. In a recent survey conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), it was found that a teen’s choice to use drugs and alcohol are associated with social media. “About 70% of American teenagers between 12 to 17 years old, who spent time on social networking sites were at a higher risk of smoking, drinking and drug usage.” Emily Feinstein, a senior analyst at CASA stated, “Seeing teens partying with alcohol or marijuana on Facebook and other
