Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a computer-guided radiation delivery system used to treat tumors that are difficult to reach or resect.
Using Technology to Target Mesothelioma
IMRT uses advanced software to target a tumor with an exact radiation dose based on the tumor’s size, shape and location in the body. IMRT enables physicians to focus higher radiation doses directly to the tumor while minimizing doses to surrounding normal tissue.
Benefits of IMRT
· More radiation where it is needed
With IMRT a radiation oncologist can precisely target a tumor with higher radiation doses than traditional radiation therapy delivery methods. IMRT minimizes radiation exposure to healthy tissues, leading to fewer side effects like treatment toxicity.

For the patient, this means fewer side effects. However, IMRT does require slightly longer daily treatment times. It also requires further preparation and planning and safety checks than traditional radiation therapy.
How is IMRT used to Treat Mesothelioma?
In mesothelioma, radiation therapy can be used after surgery to try and eradicate any small tumors that couldn’t be viewed and resected during surgery. This is called adjuvant radiation therapy.
Radiation therapy and IMRT can also be used on a palliative basis to ease the symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. These include shortness of breath, pain, bleeding and trouble swallowing.
IMRT often requires multiple treatment sessions. When determining the total number of IMRT sessions, several factors come into focus. These include the type, location and size of the tumor, the patient’s health and potential doses to nearby critical areas. On average, patients attend IMRT sessions five days a week for five to eight
