Is cheerleading a sport? That is a good question. This is a topic that is brought up and debated about quite often. With the facts that I have read in articles, it is a sport. Cheerleading is a competitive sport, it requires athletic abilities and maintains the 4 requirements to be an “official” sport.
Since the early1400’s, golf has been a luxury pastime for men and later, women. For years, the big debacle on golf has been the debate on whether golf is a game or sport. Personally, I believe golf is a sport because, like most sports, golf involves a ball. The sport also involves the players training for many hours out on the course just like a basketball player would spend time on a basketball court. Though many spectators could argue that golf is a game rather than a sport, the two greatly differ.
______________________________________________ Reason #1: The definition of a sport is,”an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” 2 Example: There is constant competition in the wrestling world. (WWE vs WCW) 3 Explanation:For example, back in the late 1990s, at that time WWF was having an intense competition with enemy wrestling company WCW.
Cheer, what comes to mind when you think cheer. Most people would consider it not a sport, but I am here to tell you why I think it is. Not just because I’m a cheerleader, it’s my opinion and my firm belief cheer should be recognized as a sport. Many people get injured and you have vigorous training that in most cases could be harder than training for basketball, for example. Cheerleaders have to be able to throw people not just a ball.
An example is gymnastics. Why is gymnastics considered a sport but dance is not? Gymnastics is similar to dance in a way. So why does one get to be called a sport and one isn’t. Dancers are strong mentally and physically.
Even with the Olympic committee saying cheerleading is a sport, people are still not convinced that cheerleading is active enough to be considered a sport. As you can see cheerleading meets all the athletic specifications to be sport. So why are people saying that cheerleading is not a sport? In the definition of “sport” it says
For a hobby or activity to be a sport it must be a physical activity which involves throwing a mass through space/overcoming the resistance of mass. In cheerleading there is a skill called “stunting”, this is where an average height female (or male) is thrown or held, by two to four girls, 8ft into the air to perform a skill. Competing against/with an opponent is
But as for competitive cheerleading, it should be considered as a sport.
Especially in college, cheerleading should be a sport, because college level is higher and more strategic than middle and high school cheer. Yes, cheerleading is a very feminine sport and use to be a male ran activity but Title IX and all of its components should fulfill the needs for cheerleading. Cheerleading being feminine and looked down upon should not be the reason why they do not receive the aids, and materials they would need to be successful. It takes the same amount of athleticism as these sports and even more physical and emotional abilities. Cheerleading should be considered a sport because these women are just as athletic as any football team, baseball or softball
Some would say a sport is something that challenges a person physically and mentally. The sole act to have fun or entertain. Most the time a sport includes two or more individuals or teams going against each other to win. Also most sports have a point system. Would hunting fall under the category of a sport?
Is a sport a sport if you have no physical contact at all? In today’s society people have so many different views on how a sport is a sport. According to Oxford Dictionary a sport is “An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment” (Oxford Dictionary, 2018.) Gaming is rather sectioned off as a different type of sport, its owned name is eSports. eSports stands for electronic sports, so playing a game electronically.
A cheerleader is like an elastic band, they are flexible, they stretch, and they spring when they get flung into the air. Cheerleading is intense and fiercely competitive but most people deny the fact that cheerleading is an actual sport. The definition of a sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment” (“sport”,par1). This definition applies to cheerleading just as much as it does any other “sport.” Meaning, cheerleading is and should always be considered a “sport.”
Some people don 't think that cheerleading and dance are considered as a sport. Just because cheerleading and dance are not a contact sport,it doesn 't mean t 's not a sport. Everyone has different views on if cheerleading and dance is a sport. People who never dance or cheer before don 't know how much it takes to be a dancer or a cheerleader. I strongly believe that cheerleading and dance are sports.
‘’Sports provide a structured, organised world that satisfies some of our need of meaning’’ (Fulford 2006). From this statement we can see how sport plays a big role in society. Sport structures how we fit into society through the different activities we do. Sport helps you to develop as a human, it’s like a religion where it provides rules and guidelines and develops how you should act.
How to define a sport ? If we bookly define the term sport, a physical exertion and require skills for competition, also for entertainment. We influence sport in everyday life. We interact with it in many forms that related to sport; such as cheering, watching, and playing it. But in some cases, “sport” has an abstract meaning to me.
