Baseball was one of America’s most earliest and famous games back in the 1800’s and still is to this day and age. People see baseball as a game or a sport and it is, but it in many ways is also so much more than just a game or sport. It may be to your surprise, but baseball has played a big part to our history here in the United States of America. During the Summer of 1839 a young man named Abner Double was said to have invented now known as “America’s game” baseball in Cooperstown, New York.
The name stuck with him and from that point forward he was called Babe instead of George (Ruth’s). While playing with the Ravens he performed very well leading to him being sold to the Major League team the Boston RedSoxs. Even though Babe is known for his hitting back in the Majors, he started out as a pitcher. Babe won his major league debut in July of 1914. The only issue was that the Red Sox’s roster was full, so Ruth was moved to their Minor league team the Providence Grays.
Ruth was not only the greatest player in the history of the game of baseball, but he was also a spirted, likeable, outsized character who arrived always at the right moment. Babe Ruth was destined for fame starting from his days as a young ball player, then next by getting attention as a result of his remarkable pitching, and finally by stunning fans as a home run hitter. At age eight Ruth was sent to St. Mary’s, an industrial school for boys (Vecsey 56). There he was introduced to base-ball, a game he had excelled at by the time he was 15.
In this book, Jackie realizes how important it was to become inducted, “He knew that being selected for the Baseball Hall of Fame in a player’s first year of eligibility was a rare honor”. To be selected for the baseball hall of fame is rare and to be “inducted his first year” was even more rare. There was a player that got inducted with him, Bob Feller. Bob Feller “(The) Cleveland Indians pitcher … (who) made it into the Hall of Fame the first year (also)” had more votes but still, Jackie got in. These examples prove that Jackie did have a great career and going into the Hall of Fame proved that he was an amazing player.
Have you ever seen the Dodgers win the World Series? They only won six times. Jackie Robinson helped them pull through the first one in 1955 against the Yankees. He was rookie of the year in 1947 and a national league MVP in 1949. also did you know that he was the first black baseball player to play in major league baseball?
Babe was only 15 when he was introduced to baseball, he had an outstanding talent for strong pitching and hitting. Babes pitching caught the attention of the owner of the Baltimore Oriels Jack Dunn at the time. Only 19, the law stated at the time that Ruth had to have a legal guardian sign his baseball contract in order for Babe to play professionally. Dunn became Ruth’s became legal guardian, teammates to mess with Babe and call him “Dunn’s New Babe”. The joke stuck, and Ruth quickly earned the nickname “Babe” Ruth.

On August 28, 1945, Branch Rickey, the chief of the Brooklyn Dodgers, met with Jackie Robinson. Ricky disclosed to Robison that he Would like for him to play for the Dodgers, yet he could expect some inconvenience.
