Substance use and abuse has always been a very complex issue that has been going on around the world for some time, however it now proposes more intricate questions about how the usage of certain drugs has evolved in medicine and in society. But there is one specific drug that people tend to be uncertain and cautious about even though it is the number one drug used today, Marijuana. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), “Marijuana refers to the dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. The plant contains the mind-altering chemical delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other related compounds” (1). Identified by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Marijuana also known as THC …show more content…
Due to this, one of the most common trepidations people have is that if the drug were to be legalized, it would find its way to be easily accessible to minors. In Colorado and Washington where marijuana is legal for medical and recreational use, the distribution of the drug is regulated by the supplier and is only sold to people who are twenty-one and older. As these rules and regulations apply, the law controls the dissemination of the drug. With the ability to purchase marijuana legally, people also fear that it will cause for crime rates to increase. In “Legalizing Medical Marijuana May Actually Reduce Crime” by Matt Ferner, he quotes Michael Elliot, executive director of the Marijuana Industry Group: “While this program is cumbersome for the small business owners in this industry, it is far better than choosing black market operators who use violence to dominate the sale of marijuana and prey on our children” (12). With Marijuana dispensaries controlling and being the ones to allocate the drugs to those who use, it deviates people resorting to buying from those selling in the streets who don’t always have the best intentions. As the debate of whether or not legalizing marijuana is a good idea, there are many pros as to why the legalization of marijuana would be a good …show more content…
What is willfully ironic is that the use of medical marijuana or the ingredients in THC has already been proven to be beneficial to some people who have encountered certain illnesses such as muscle spasms, cancer patients, children with epilepsy, and more. Unfortunately, but still “have no use” in medicine. In addressing the hesitation of its motives, the NIDA mentions that “scientific study of the chemicals in marijuana, called cannabinoids, has led to two FDA-approved medications that contain cannabinoid chemicals in pill form…Because the marijuana plant contains chemicals that may help treat a range of illnesses or symptoms, many people argue that it should be legal for medical purposes” (2). There have been chemicals found in marijuana that exhibit beneficial factors to those who are in need of alternate medical remedies, but continue to take a back seat due to its classification as a drug. Because there hasn’t been large experiments to get any certain answers, in “Medical Marijuana and Epilepsy,” Joseph Sirven and Patricia Shafer stated that: “Individual reports of children with refractory (or intractable) epilepsy who have tried cannabis, usually with high ratios of cannabidiol to THC, have reported marked improvements in seizure frequency” (4).
This subject has been debated numerous times over the past few years. People’s points of view and researches about the topic have varied greatly. Some people believe that marijuana should be legalized, while the rest feel should stay prohibited. Proponents of marijuana argue that there are numerous medical benefits and that the drug is not more harmful than tobacco or alcohol. On the other hand, opponents argue that marijuana is too dangerous; its legalization would increase the chances of the drug falling into the hands of teens and that marijuana use often progresses to the use of more dangerous drugs like heroin and cocaine.
Back in the early twentieth century, marijuana was mainly used for medical purposes in the US. Now, both it 's recreational and medical use is increasingly being consumed by the population and the tendency is to continue increasing. Much has been said about the use of marijuana as a solution to different health problems, and although not everything that is said is true, it cannot be ignored that marijuana can help in the treatment of some cases of adult patients. CNN’s chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, was opposed to the medicinal use of cannabis. Based on his knowledge as a neurologist, he was convinced that the drug was dangerous and had dismissed its supposed therapeutic benefits.
Imagine having an incurable disease and no way to cope with the pain, well this is the case for many Americans and their problems can be solved with marijuana. Now that marijuana is legal in Colorado it has decreased the amount of opioid related deaths. Medical marijuana has many great attributes such as its ability to safely and effectively help people with symptoms of cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, and epilepsy. There are many non smoked ways to consume marijuana, such as in cooking oils, butter, foods, and from vaporizers. If the marijuana is regulated by the FDA it will be safer because there is no chance of it being laced with anything.
Legalize Marijuana Marijuana is a drug with plenty of benefits and by being illegal it affects me personally, the communities’ economy, and most importantly the suffering patients that need stronger and better medicine to relieve whatever issue they may have. Just because some may not understand or need all the benefits legalizing marijuana could bring, does not mean they should ruin the opportunity for those who do. Marijuana could improve the state’s and local counties’ economy. The Huffington Post says “WPTV reports indicate that legalization of marijuana in Washington could bring an estimated 500 million dollars in tax revenue to the state”. If Texas could make that alone in tax revenue it will be a major help to our whole economy.
It is important to recognize the possible negative impacts of widespread use on public health and safety so that effective regulatory policies can be written. Because the mental impairment caused by the drug THC is well known, it will be non-controversial to legislate against “driving while stoned” and use of marijuana while on the job. However, secondhand smoke presents another way for increased marijuana use to harm public health that may be less obvious to policy makers. (Matthew) Marijuana has several effects on the cardiovascular system.
As a nation we have come to point where we must take a unified stand on the issue of marijuana. Since 1937 the drug has been deemed illegal by the U.S. government but over the best decade, people have been pushing for the decriminalization of the cannabis plant. As a non drug user, i have researched the internet in search of unbiased information regarding the drugs health, economic, and crime influences on society. The fruits of my labor have brought me to the undisputable conclusion that our continued restriction on possession and use of the drug not only violates the liberties of U.S. citizens, but it also is costing Americans Billions of dollars, and something, our lives.

Gavin White Mrs. White 2nd block 14 Apr. 2017 The Legalization of Medical Cannabis I realize that most people disagree when I say that medical cannabis should be legalized, but there are more good reasons then bad. Plus just think about all the lives medicine, that is pretty much free, can save. I mean it grows out of the ground and slows cancerous cells drastically not to mention it stops seizures and slows Alzheimer 's. Anyways the list goes on and on so there is no sense in delaying help to save lives because last I checked that was murder.
