Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher and author, once stated, “The well-being of a community of people working together will be the greater, the less the individual claims for himself the proceeds of his work, the more of these proceeds he makes over to his fellow-workers, the more his own needs are satisfied, not out of his own work but out of the work done by others” (“Recording of Society”). This quote represents the true meaning of a discourse community. A discourse community is a group of social individuals that work together to reach a common goal, understand the same basic values and assumptions, and use a unique kind of communication to reach their set goal or purpose. A good example of a discourse community is the organization
the community as well as how to coordinate events within the community. Members of the association also know the requirements that are necessary to maintain the community. In turn, newcomers in the community, the new property owners, would gain experience through meetings with other members of the association to discuss the guidelines of the association. Discourse communities also contain “participatory mechanisms which are mechanisms used to take the uptake of informational opportunities such as an annual subscription to a magazine that the discourse community releases” (Swales, 1990). Furthermore, “participatory mechanisms” used in this discourse community such as their article in the Padre Island Moon are used to further the goal of the
A Discourse community is a group of people who contribute a selective intrest and use a certain type of language to communicate with each member in the community. A register is another type of way in which something is explained or written and can be very important the meaning of the message. Creations, like most things in life, are improvable. Ideas and theories are always evolving into different ideas or more sophisticated ones. Discourse communities is a term that has been debated over the years. Three of those debaters are James Paul Gee, James P. Porter, and John Swales. In this essay I will analyze what each of these writers see as the definition of a discourse community while comparing specific points that each of them have regarding their personal view on the subject. It is also important to keep in mind that these authors published each of their articles within a 3-year period. That is important because Swales was the first of the three to publish his paper, everyone who wrote about discourse communities after him, already
Rose does a fantastic job in building a bridge to create trust for his targeted readers, using many examples. The ethos that really stands out from the article is when rose states, “social media simultaneously draws us nearer and distances us” (174). This can be a tremendous problem, causing people to ignore the ones closest to them, since meeting in person would be an easier task than the ones far away. Today many people deal with this situation, whether it’s family or friends, causing them to distance from each other, even though they are significantly close. It gives a strong understanding to why Rose believes social media does give a negative impact to humans by building a wall between the ones closest to each other. A good example he uses
A speech given in 1933 by the 32nd U.S President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, tried to persuade the citizens of the United States of America, via radio, to trust their government and to keep their values secure. This speech, which was named The First Fireside Chat, helped the citizens have faith in their government and trust them with their savings. President Roosevelt was the first president to talk to the citizens which resulted in them believing in what he was stating in his speech. He explained step by step what system the government was going to use and how it would function. The First Fireside Chat, by Franklin D. Roosevelt, was a speech spoken by a very significant man stating the country’s banking issue and their solution to the problem
An important discourse community that was a part of my life was my volleyball team during my four years of high school. I started playing my first year going into high school and continued until I graduated. Until now I wasn’t even aware that would even be considered a discourse community, but it fits all of the qualifications of Swales’ definition of a discourse community. Goals
In "Mike Rowe: Learning from Dirty Jobs." The speaker, Mike Rowe, is the host of a television series that looks into the lives of Americans who are said to have undesirable jobs. He begins the speech with a narrative about his experience in the Rocky Mountains, and how he was supposed to castrate a lamb. He continues by describing the scenario, and how he expected the process to be done as according to the humane society. However, the farmer who Mike is learning from has a completely different method than what he was expecting. After having serious doubts about how the farmer castrated the lamb, he was able to finally accept that he was wrong in regards to how the process should be done, and how he was wrong about a variety of other things
Throughout the novel Tuesday’s With Morrie, the author, Mitch Albom, reflects on his Tuesday meetings with his old professor, now consumed with a terminal illness, and, using many rhetorical choices, reveals “The Meaning of Life,” which they discussed profusely and divided into several categories. Topics such as Death, Emotions, Aging, Money, Culture, and more are all discussed in their weekly conferences, Morrie passing his wisdom on to one of his favor students. And Albom, writing about their talks, uses numerous rhetoric devices to discuss this wisdom.
Mirabelli helped me decide what discourse community I want to study. Like Mirabelli, I am going to study a discourse community that I was a part of. After reading the extensive knowledge Mirabelli had on the community, I realized it aided his ethnographic study. Without prior knowledge of the community, an ethnographic study is harder to complete. I also noticed the passion Mirabelli had for the discourse community he studied.
Analysis of the Rhetorical Strategy used by Mike Rose in “Blue Collar Brilliance” Scrolling through social media, one would see a lot of posts from accounts called RelatableGifs2016, or SchoolMemes101. From the names of the accounts one can make an educated guess about they might post. Relatable pictures. When something is familiar it becomes more understandable, and people tend to empathize more with something if they can have a connection with it.
Discourse Community and 12 Episode of the Serial According to the lecture in the UWP 101 class, I have learned that discourse community is a group of people who communicate with one another to achieve a common. In addition, Porter who wrote the article “Intertextuality and the Discourse Community”, states that discourse communities creates its own collective meaning, and shares assumption about what objects are appropriate for examination and discussion. In the other words, discourse community is a group of people who build up an individual ideology. Ideology is a collection of beliefs about the world that held by a group of people who share the information together.
A discourse community I took part of was my High School’s Varsity Baseball Team. Sacramento High’s Baseball team was very competitive, due to the fact that it was the least favored sport at Sac High, so we were always trying to prove ourselves better than any other sport. We had to do many things in order to try and get fans to come out and watch us play. The team consisted of six-teen players and four coaches whom worked extremely hard the past four years to finally earn the title of Champions.
When I was first introduced to the topic of a discourse community I began overwhelmed with confusion. As the course progressed I began to grasp the aspect of the topic. In addition, I found that the writing process was not as complex and time consuming as the other assigned writing this semester. Thus, making it an easier and more enjoyable experience overall. I did exceptionally well on this paper, earning a five out of six because I put the most effort into it, becoming my best written piece.
