All throughout this article Tan uses personal experience from her mom to show the readers the struggle while also using primary sources to back up her claim. All the evidence backs up her initial claim and as the reader your perspective changes after reading about how she personally was effected. The author 's main claim of Mother Tongue is to persuade people so respect people who struggle with English because she has serval personal connections, she has fact based proof, and she is an experienced writer on this topic and in general. All throughout the reading she uses many personal stories and personal experiences on how difficult it was for her mother to go through her everyday life.
In Rhina Espaillat’s poem, “Bilingual/Bilingüe”, she has described her cultural situation as rough. Espaillat discusses how her father did not allow for her daughter to speak both languages, English and Spanish, together in the house. The father demanded her to only speak Spanish inside the house and English outside only because he is afraid that the language will tear their relationship apart. However, since Espaillat considered herself stubborn, she didn’t want the separation of languages, she taught herself English. Being raised in a household with a different language than what the dominant language is outside of the household is difficult for some individuals, however, mixing cultural differences and languages into one is wonderful.

Mami was considered more polite than saying mama according to Mama Elena and if they didn 't, they would get slapped. However towards the middle of the book, Tita couldn 't cope with her anymore. Near the end, Tita announced her hatred for her mom by exclaiming,” I know who I am!

Friends don’t like it when other friends keep secrets from them. The argument that i support is that Cece is able to build relationships and her partial defense doesn’t interfere. They said that Cece couldn’t hear them, but i say that she could hear them just fine but she couldn’t understand them. Cece made relationships with the others because she’s made friendships already with kids from her neighborhood that are there for her.
