Nothing But the Truth is a modern contemporary play that deals with Sipho’s life as he looks back on his life and his family during Apartheid. The play deals with many themes that relate to the political context of this play, that being the struggles of black people during Apartheid told through the TRC and internal sibling rivalry, example Themba and Sipho’s life as children. Nothing But the Truth is set in the year 2000 in a South Africa still recovering from a post Apartheid regime, TRC hearings are happening, one main hearing is the Cradock Four case in which 4 activists were kidnapped and killed on their way back home. The characters also talk about historical events in South Africa and real political activists during Apartheid a common theme in South Africa theatre. Nothing But the Truth pictures the past of Sipho Makhaya, who throughout his life been treated unjustly , three main parts of his life would be his childhood, adult and old age all parts playing a massive roll in his life albeit negative.
Sipho’s childhood had been usually plagued with rivalry with his brother Themba as well as favouritism between his father and Themba. Sipho recounts his youth with Themba and how Themba stole the wire bus Sipho made and treasured, the wire bus is a common subject that Sipho brings up as it was the first possible thing Themba takes from him. Sipho states in the play “He did not need that wire bus. He took it because it was mine”
