Discussion Post NURS 6531 Week One Nurse Practitioner Competencies Quality As we further our education to become advanced practice nurses (APNs), it is crucial that we understand the behaviors or core competencies expected of all APNs. For the purpose of this discussion, I will evaluate the core competency of quality and how I will integrate this behavior into my daily practice. The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (2014), outlines the quality competency as continued improvement of practice through the use of the best evidence, evaluation of the influence of safety, access, cost, and quality of health care. These four factors combined help students to understand the patient and providing the best care. The nursing department values the integrity of the diversity of students, promotes health, hope, and caring to the human condition, and promotes excellence in the commitment of continuous growth, education, improvement, and understanding (NLN, n.d.). Nurses must use communication, critical thinking, evidence based research, problem solving, and effective decision making for the delivery of safe, quality care of the patient (CSI Nursing Department, 2014). The CSI Nursing Department mission and philosophy related to the values in the nursing specialty organizations in that they all emphasis the care of the patient and emphasis values that are different in their level of the care. Excellence and providing effective patient care is seen mostly in every organization values because education is the background for providing the best care.
It is of the utmost importance for the nurse to take all the competencies into consideration while caring for a patient, but the most important competency for a palliative care nurse is systems thinking. I believe the need for this capability supersedes the others, as according to Matzo & Sherman (2015) it is through this competency that the nurse is able to apply the knowledge they possess and it in turn offer the patient an improved quality of life as they are undergoing palliative care. This allows for the nurse to have the capability to provide the patient with the care they require. This capability enables the nurse to be competent and recognize the patient’s needs and tailor a specific care plan unique to the specific needs of the patient.
