There is a high significance for a nursing student completing their degree in nursing to start their career as a nurse practitioner. Nursing students must prepare to become nationally certified by an accredited body upon completion of their schooling in order to advance their career (AANP, 2016). This academic accreditation process helps to show that the students have met the requirements to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in their population focus testing. The scope of practice will be affected based on the certification that the practitioner obtains. If the Nurse Practitioner obtains a certification as a nurse specialists in pediatrics, oncology, geriatrics, emergency medicine, etc. there are scopes and standards of practices that the practitioner must not act outside of (ANA, 2016). There are also state regulation scopes of practices that allow for Nurse Practitioners to practice independently, with reduced practice, and with restricted practice. Along with these practice environments, Nurse Practitioners must abide by facility and institutional policy and procedures that outline their scope of practice (ANA, 2016). There are very few states that still allow Nurse Practitioners to practice without a national certification. A career as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is a natural extension of my personal, educational, and research experiences. Although my path to nursing has not been a straight line, every experience that put me on this path has shaped my passion and dedication to psychiatric nursing.

Growing up with parents very passionate about the health care field has had a tremendous influence on my decision to pursue the health sciences. This was because of two things: my interest in helping others and my fascination with science. I was always been interested with science in grade school mostly because it interested me to see how living organisms functioned. This was especially true when it came to the human body. Helping others has also always been a passion of mine for as long as I remember. It always has given me great joy helping others to be happy or feel better about themselves in any way possible. So it made sense for me to go into college as a Nursing major. My mom has always been a huge inspiration in my life, so it made sense to me to strive to be a nurse just like her.
As a first year student I have very specific goals in mind that I hope to achieve through my work in college. My main hopes for the future are that I pass all of my exams in the coming years, graduate and receive my honours degree in general nursing, become a registered nurse and finally get a job as a nurse. Throughout this essay, I have detailed my strengths and the opportunities that will help me finalise these goals along with my weaknesses and the threats that will hinder my progress.

A competent nurse is knowledgeable, compassionate, holistic, ethical, a patient advocate, and integrates other disciplines in order to achieve excellence in quality patient care. I believe the road is paved with multiple opportunities for students to experience and collaborate with competent nurses. Because I believe the qualities that are characteristic of a competent nurse also are characteristic of an competent nurse educator, my teaching styles reflects my nursing practice. Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to make a difference and help anyone in need that I possibly could. From the start of my childhood, I can recall helping my mother care for my great grandparents, so they would be able to live out the rest of their lives from their home, instead of in a nursing home. As a young child it was extremely difficult to live with and watch my loved ones deteriorate as they got older, as their condition got worse and worse, and saw my mother having a difficult time keeping up with caring for both of my great grandparents 24/7, it put a lot of stress on the family. To have a better understanding of nursing from a person who has been in the field longer, I interview Ms. Santa, Faulkner University’s school nurse. She is located in the school’s gym and is able to accommodate every Faulkner student, faculty, and staff. It was joy to interview her because unlike Alicia Burke, she only has an associates in nursing. Ms. Santa is from France and started out attending nursing school at Le Vinatier Colloque. However, she ended up obtaining her degree from Hayworth College in California. Ms. Santa has been a nurse for a total of twelve years.
