Over the last ten years of working within the health care sector I’ve worked closely with mental health nurses, listening to their personal experiences in a wide variety of settings. Extensive research, work experience and personal experiences of mental health issues such as my son’s recent diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder has inspired me to pursue a mental health nursing qualification. Mental health nursing promotes and highlights relevant skills that I have acquired over the years that are crucial in this role. Courage to trust my own judgement and competence to make decisions in often highly stressful situations has lead me to be promoted to team leader at work.
When she was only nineteen, her kindness was already apparent as she cared for her one-year-old brother, as he was “assigned to her special care, ‘given’ to her then as ‘my child’” (Marshall, 2013, pg. 55). Fuller, because her mother had too many other children to care for, acted as Edward’s mother up until he “died in her arms” due to an “unknown illness” (Marshall, 2013, pg. 55). Despite the tragic death of her brother, Margaret Fuller continued to care for her family as she “renewed her vow to follow the -- her commitment to the duty, the care of her mother and siblings” (Marshall, 2013, pg. 95). Despite living in what should have been “carefree New York days”, Fuller continued to look out for her family, Lloyd, her mentally disabled younger brother, in particular.
Overcoming adversity has helped me grow into a responsible young adult through the trials I have faced. Growing up, I was raised by my mother and older sister. I have watched my mother overcome the difficulties of being a single mother without support. She would work tirelessly to afford our small apartment. Before their divorce, my father had abused her both mentally and physically, leaving her with emotional and financial scars.

Every parent shows love and support to their children regardless of race, culture and ethnicity. The only different in parenting is discipline, values and cultural beliefs. There are other factors that can influence ways of parenting, which includes personal experiences, traditions and values.
Nursing has always been a passion of mine, especially labor and delivery nursing. While others in my class would cringe away from the birth video in my freshman health class, I watched in fascination, tearing up at how natural and joyous childbirth was. When I told my parents, they were hesitant when it came to their support. My mother thought it was a messy job that required too much liability insurance. Unfortunately for her I was headstrong and refused to listen.
My mother is always working hard to provide all the necessary needs in our house, but she cannot give us things that we want, so I decided to work so I can be able to help her with the bills, and pay for college. That is my first barrier. I am the oldest child, and it is my responsibility to help my mother and siblings even if I have to sacrifice my own time. Thanks to God I am finding a way to have time for work and school. I work with one of my aunts and she is helping me find the best work schedule so I can have time for school, and enjoy myself at least one time per month.
I first acknowledged the importance of healthcare and my desire to study nursing years ago when I started working at a medical clinic. Although I spent most of my time filing patients’ notes and other documents, I learned a lot by listening. This simple act had a complementary effect that enhanced my strategic-thinking skills and my ability to communicate. By working alongside nurses and practitioners, I discovered that with these acquired listening skills and the appropriate medical training, I could be a successful nurse.
Ever since grade school, I was passionate about working in the field of medicine, and science. I enjoyed anatomy, medical spelling and terminology, and reading about the healthcare industry. Because of my passion for healthcare, I decided to to attend Health Sciences High. There, I was given the best opportunities, such as, medical internships and college health courses. My plans and goals had turned me into a mature young adult.
As a child, I dreamed of acquiring a career in Nursing. I was always fascinated by the amount of respect that nurses received during my doctor visits throughout my childhood. There are many reasons why I chose to major in Nursing such as the ability to take care of someone, the money and benefits that the career offered, as well as job stability and flexibility. On of my main reasons for pursing Nursing is the ability to care for someone other than myself.
I informed my guardian counselor about my dream of being a nurse. She informed me of a school program that teaches college classes and gives students the opportunity to volunteer in different medical sites. I was ecstatic to learn about this opportunity, so I work hard to have a good GPA in order for me to get accepted to the class. I got accepted to the class and I started during my junior year. My favorite part of the class is the opportunity it gives us to do activities that help other people and the opportunity to volunteer in the hospitals and for community services.
I believe that combining my clinical aptitude with the resources available in your hospital would make me well suited for practicing and learning Medicine in the US. By applying my prior experience and knowledge in the hospital and clinics, I can immediately be a productive member of the medical team. Also, nearly one year of US clinical experience provided me with a strong training and educational foundation. It helped me familiarize myself to
I am not just interested in becoming a Physician Assistant; I dream of, and am driven to become one. I have been fascinated by the medical field as long as I can remember. I had the opportunity to begin scribing for a physician and absolutely loved the patient interaction, the variety of duties that had to be accomplished and the fact that for some people a fifteen to twenty minute appointment may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of a day or life, but to those who were being seen, their lives are instantly changed for the better. I learned such a vast amount of knowledge every single day I worked there. I grew to love the medical field more and more and am confident I was meant to work my hardest to be able to provide care to patients as my life occupation; specifically rural areas like the one I grew up in.
Through becoming a nurse I aspire to take my education in medicine and delegate my efforts to not only improving the medical status of my patients but also to improve the mental well being of them as well. My experience growing into a world where prime physical health was not an option, the opportunity to see how a staff of passionate nurses can contribute to the mental stability and growth of a patient was an honor and inspiration that drives my passion for this career choice. Also, over the last few years I have grown a particular interest in medical research and would love to take his passion with me to expand my interest and contribute to the extensive research program at
I have also developed my time management and team working skills and am aware that these are essential qualities for working in a medical field. My confidence in handling complex tasks has increased because I was supporting patients with chronic conditions, caused by the long term effects of smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity and drug abuse. I gained a holistic knowledge of how an individual’s lifestyle is related to these treatments. After I successfully completed my work experience, I attended a lecture on physiology courses which were available at several universities.
I had learned so much from this class that I will take with me into my nursing career. During this course, I was able to think critically and tried understand what is like to be old. I am happy to say that my results were outstanding and I think the information that I had acquired from doing the internet explore on many different topics will be useful to me in the future. I work in a nursing home and I love helping people with their activities of daily living. Many people that I helped have amazing stories to tell about their life and the things they had done.
