Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to make a difference and help anyone in need that I possibly could. From the start of my childhood, I can recall helping my mother care for my great grandparents, so they would be able to live out the rest of their lives from their home, instead of in a nursing home. As a young child it was extremely difficult to live with and watch my loved ones deteriorate as they got older, as their condition got worse and worse, and saw my mother having a difficult time keeping up with caring for both of my great grandparents 24/7, it put a lot of stress on the family. However, I am grateful to have been able to help my mother care for them. Growing up in such a caring and loving household made the situation
The NICU is a Neonatal intensive care unit is a special area for premature and sick babies, they go there to receive the help they need, and some babies need help to breathe or they are missing something in their body. They can also come early before their due date and they are sent there to receive their special help.
I have worked with medical students who come from the UA COM-P culture and I believe they bring a great amount of cultural awareness to their role on the healthcare team. The focus of early clinical exposure at UA COM-P makes a significant difference in learning how to care for people. The UA COM-P emphasis on cultural diversity allows for more learning opportunities and fully encompasses what it means to take care of the patient and not just treat a disease. I have decided to study Mental health nursing to fulfill a life-long desire of helping people with disabilities. I am a registered nurse and currently hold an associates degree. I am actively enrolled in TESU working towards my Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) which is the degree most employers seek when hiring nurses. Once I have earned my BSN, which will be in the summer of 2016, my plan is to then take certain certification courses. I am very passionate about learning wound, ostomy and incontinence care (WOC) and will take the classes and state exams I need to earn my certification shortly after graduating TESU. Wound, ostomy and incontinence care needs are growing, especially in the home care setting, and this will allow me to apply for positions that are more tailored to what I wish to specialize in. In an article published by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, a study was done on the outcomes of wound healing on home health care patients, which reported that wounds cared for by a WOC nurse resulted in 78.5% of wounds healing compared with 36.3% when care was provided by general staff nurses (Westra, Bliss, Savik, Hou, & Borchert, 2013, p. 135, 136).
This is a personal statement for my application to the Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration in the Ball State School of Nursing. My personal statement provides details on my personal background and the unique impact that Family Nurse Practitioners have had on my life. I describe my undergraduate studies and how I firsthand gained interest as well as insight on the skills of a Family Nurse Practitioner. I go into detail about my aspiration to be a Family Nurse Practitioner to directly affect the patient care of a variety of patient populations. The personal statement connects qualities of my current practice as a Registered Nurse to the proficiencies of a Family Nurse Practitioner. I describe my learning habits and how the plan of study that Ball State offers coincides with my current work life. The outcome of my goal is that by end of December I will be more confident in communicating with doctors, CNA’s, charge nurses’ and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
