As we were heading for the goal on another break away, the opposing team kicked it out of bounds by the goal. My sister Bailey, who is also on the team, set the ball up for a corner kick. Her kick was a beautiful, high, hard drive to the front of the box. I remember thinking of my trainer’s words, “Anything is possible”. I jumped up at the right moment.
When I first thought about how soccer impacted my life, nothing really came to mind. I was that kid who mostly looked forward to the end of the game snacks and bringing around the goal jar. But when I actually began thinking about more about playing soccer I realized that soccer was the first place where I was fully submerged into something completely new. I learned how to make friends, how be a leader, and how to have good sportsmanship. These are all things that have made me into the person I am today and it all began on the soccer field.
Summer was at full blast, Sunday league was starting and I was playing soccer every single day. I was ready for the next season of high school soccer to come and I was training myself to the limit because I wanted to be one of the best players on the field and to possibly be captain for varsity this year. This year was also the year our new coach, coach Jay was in charge of us because Olivier had left last year to to go to Michigan with his wife. Jay had already seen how well of a player I was because I played in his soccer club and immediately placed me in the varsity roster but as a defender and not a striker. The transition was difficult but I learned fast.
It was a Fall night wear the stars were out and all you could ever do is hear coach yelling to stop moving away from our positions. That night we were training for a very important soccer tournament that was only a couple weeks away. Coach smith liked to win but i think what he liked most was that we tried our best. We were a very hard team to defeat but we had our moments where we would lose games by a landslide.
At Carmel High school, Chandler Grey was the guy with it all, he was the star striker for the soccer team, he was dating the captain of the cheerleading squad, all the guys wanted to be just like him, but, he was flunking, If his grades stooped any lower he would be benched on the championship game, and no one would want that. Ryan had a big Algebra final coming up and if he didn’t pass he wouldn’t be able to play in the big championship game. Ryan had been studying every moment of everyday, yet he still wasn’t confident he would pass. He knew the formulas and he knew the expressions, but something in the back of his head was screaming at him to study more. He felt as though the weight of the soccer teams future was on his shoulders.
“I learned about life with a ball at my feet.” What do you first think about when you hear the word soccer? Do you think about the coolest goal ever made? Or maybe the best jukes you’ve ever seen? Well there’s more to soccer than scoring goals and juking people.
Being shoved to the ground and coming up with a mouthful of turf and a bloody nose isn’t the ideal way to spend a friday night, but for me, it's something I put blood, sweat, and tears into. Soccer has been a passion of mine since my father dropped me off at the local YMCA when I was at the tender age of four. Spending all of my free days for thirteen years running after a soccer ball is arguably what made me into the person I am today. Unity, tenacity, passion and pride have all been morals that are valued within the sport and in my own philosophy. I have explored places I’d never give a second thought to because my sport took me there.
My Soccer Life It is Friday, May 25, 2015, I, Aubrey, am inside getting ready for soccer practice. It was 5:30 and I had to leave very soon, my practice is at 5:45. So we got in the car and we pulled out of our driveway and left.
When I was younger, my father gave me a lecture on having a desire. He told me that to be successful, you must have the desire to work for whatever you seek. Now that I am old enough and have been through some trials and tribulations to understand the concept of his philosophy, I believe in having a desire and having the will to work. When I was in the seventh grade, I felt as if I was a car with a dead engine on a highway during a winter storm. Even though I was a straight A student I had no desire to work, especially with the troubles I had at school and at home.
One of my best days was when my soccer team won the championship. I won several other championships ,but with other teams. This was my first season playing with this team. The major characters in this event were me, my teammates, my coaches and the parents. This event took place in a park at sanger during the summer.
This was my first year on a varsity team and only my second year playing soccer competitively, so joining the team was especially daunting. But, outside of practice hours (4-5 days per week for 2-3 hours), I practiced at the park and trained with my cousin, who played soccer in college, to improve my skills. I even played in the house, which my mother did not appreciate. But, I genuinely wanted to get better and pull my weight and be part of the team. The team gave me a sense of community and pushed me to persevere in the face of adversity.
It was a rainy spring morning and I was playing in a soccer tournament with my brother, the rest of our team, and my dad as the coach. TWEET, TWEET, TWEET! We were all ecstatic when the referee blew the whistle to end the most important game of the season because we won the game! We all ran off the field and my dad told us to calm down and shake hands with the other team. “It’s good sportsmanship”, my dad said.
Football had a major impact on my life, playing football helped me to communicate with others creating an brotherly bond with my fellow teammates. Playing this sport taught me a lot like size doesn't matter, it's all about hard work and dedication like it's your last time playing on the field. Football showed me how to be mentally and physically strong, to be a leader and lead by example. This sport became apart of my life being apart of the community and making my town happy, I love playing this sport and being with my teammates because even when there is time it's an easy day my teammates always push me to do my best so I can get better every time I'm on the field. I was ready to play soccer with my team during PE and dashed right out the locker rooms. I was ready to hear Mr. Orluck’s loud voice to tell us to go to the soccer field so that I could bolt out to there and get to talk to all my friends. My heart was rushing and my legs were shaking with excitement to run to be the goalie of my team. I went and gave my attention back to Mr. Orluck to give us the signal to go straight out there. “Let’s go!
If I only know then what I know now, I would not have participated in that match. I have been playing soccer ever since I can remember. It was a great passion of mine, and a method for relieving all of the stress. I can still remember the day that it happened vividly. It was our last varsity game, against one of our biggest rivals, who were also one of the best in Michigan.
