There are many different ways that you can help students that are dealing with homelessness. John Heegard,a veteran teacher said that “The way I look at it, my job is to build relationships, get to know my kids. I have to be honest, open, and treat them like young adults, which is what they are. Valencia and I already had a relationship, so the trust level was at a place where she could trust me.” (Holgersson, 2010).
Aeshia was a student at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, New York until fall 2003 when she had to move out due to the fact that her child’s father became physically abuse. Aeshia life became very tough, she had to sleep on beaches she took her son with her both of them stayed at an EAU. It became difficult when she had to wake up early in the morning and leave her children with her girlfriend. Her way getting to school was by riding the train, waking up early in the morning to get to Brooklyn. Adriana, Aeshia, Asad and Johnny were homeless college students.
In the late 1800s, people in many parts of the world decided to leave their homes and immigrate to the United States. With hope for a brighter future, nearly 12 million immigrants arrived in the United States between 1870 and 1900. Immigrants entered the United States through several ports. Those from Europe generally came through East Coast facilities and West Coast centers. Immigrants living in America have to endure the close scrutiny, remarks and questions raised by the native-born Americans.
I was homeless. Everything - from my prestigious awards to my mattress all the way to the trash from beside my toilet- was piled right on top of one another. Teddy bears, pictures, and even abstract memories seemed to have a haunting presence as I tried to comprehend what was happening. My dad patiently tried to help me understand how we had got to a point of such penetrating financial instability that the bank had revoked our house. Homelessness, while seemingly obvious, means different things to different people.
In “Homeless on Campus” author, Kingsborough Community College English Department Instructor, Eleanor Bader explains the increasing amount of homeless students and ways the public can help get them into various necessary living situations. Bader has two main audiences whom she is addressing. The first audience is homeless students. This report helps homeless students feel as if their voice is being heard and that they are not the only ones going through this. The second audience is teachers and college faculty members.

Bader explains how hard the life of a homeless college student is and argues how the colleges are not doing enough to help those homeless students. She gives examples of various homeless college students to support her argument. She also gives examples on how we as an individual or as a group can help those students in need. Bader starts her article by talking about Aesha, a 20-year old student and a mother of a child.
My most significant endeavor since attending community college would be helping my community to receive an Adult Daycare. Thought this endeavorer I have applied my knowledge that I have learned about the disease to educate others in my community who may not have to know the impact of it. I have also used and sought the aid of my relationship that I have built by being at my community college. This Adult Daycare service or Coltrane LIFE center is something that I am passionate about having in my hometown. My grandpa has Alzheimer's and I have seen the stress that tolls on the family and caregiver.
Homelessness on Campus “Over 58,000 students identified as homeless on the 2013 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) , a 75 percent increase over the last three years”(Dunning). Homelessness on college campuses is damaging to the individuals who are affected by it. Homelessness is damaging to the individual because it makes graduating from college difficult. To find a way to solve homelessness we need to figure out what the causes of homelessness are.
A man sat down next to me and introduced himself. As the conversation was flowing, he mentioned he was homeless. “I come here to take my mind off my problems” Archie Boyd, 52, said. “It’s warm; there are toilets and I can watch a movie”. As it turned out, seeking shelter in the library had become a daily routine for him, as well as for dozens of other unsheltered people from the area.
“Homeless on Campus,” by Eleanor Bader is a summary of homeless students on college campuses. Bader taught English at Kingsborough Community College and she was also a freelance writer. This report explains how many students on college campuses are homeless and are trying to continue their education. Bader illustrates her points by writing about students that share their personal stories about their hardships. She also communicates with others who have insight and information about students who have no home and are going to college.
In her essay “Homeless on Campus” Professor Eleanor J. Bader, writes about students who are attending college while being homeless. She introduces four students whom are homeless and explains their stories. As she described the life of each student it became obvious that stories were similar; students left home due to hardships and abuse from others, and are now moving from one place to another, going to extreme measures to make sure everything is taking care off, and all while focussing on school work. Bader identified three main focus points on the issue of homeless students on campus. She noted that unlike elementary school and high school, universities do not provide any formal help to homeless students.
On a daily basis homeless individuals must find new ways to survive to constantly changing
With the increased use of housing-based assistance programs being created, there is a positive outlook for homeless looking for assistance getting back on their feet by acquiring affordable housing. The ability to apply and gain benefits through state and federal programs is helping to provide food and some financial assistance to the homeless population as well as a community outreach programs being deployed in cities all over the country. New opportunities for employment and training are available for those who are homeless and looking to get back into the workforce and get off the street. The road ahead for the homeless population is, of course, paved with struggles and detours, but with the continued efforts of our country, states and communities we can work together to aid in the reduction of homelessness with the continued efforts in creating and maintaining affordable housing programs, assistance programs, and workforce development
You would n ever know by looking at me or talking to me that my family and I have been homeless before. For the kids that have been homeless before it doesn't make you any less worthy, or intelligent than anyone else. There are many things you can do not only to help yourself with the feelings of being embarrassed or ashamed but you can also help others like you, be apart of organizations, and volunteer your time to others that have been in our situation of being homeless so they can feel better and know it ’s okay.
Beneficiaries called to ask me if I wanted to perform community service at a cathedral in Dallas, TX. I agreed because I like to volunteer in any event when it is needed. This event was called “Feed the Hunger,” which I signed up for and looked forward to because of my desire to lend a hand and assist the needy and unfortunate. At first, I thought this event was just one of those other community service opportunities that I am usually called to facilitate and volunteer my time. However, in the end, this occasion was a life-changing experience.
