Being in high school, you’re bound to hear about or see someone commit an act of plagiarism at least once. In my case, I’ve seen it happen plenty of times. Some of those times, the teacher didn’t require any online plagiarism checker to make sure the student’s work was plagiarized either. All that the teacher would have to do is pick a few sentences, or high level vocabulary words, and ask the student, “what does this mean?”; given no response, the answer was clear. The student plagiarized. After all, we are living in a time where plagiarizing is as simple as copy and paste. The rise of the internet has only made plagiarizing easier; in seconds, students can get hundreds of thousands of results with just a Google search. In schools, cheating and plagiarism is unacceptable. No matter the situation a student may be in, cheating is not the answer. It is unfair for a student to cheat or plagiarize other’s work. Many schools have put an honor code in place, so students understand the seriousness when cheating is taking place. My school does not have an honor code that every student must follow. Certain teachers will include some form of an honor code in their syllabus, but sometimes never enforce it. Teachers at the high school I attend assume that the students are capable of academic integrity. I have seen and experienced other students cheating and never being caught for it. If they were caught, the teacher would simply mention to the student they been caught,
People wonder what is so wrong with cheating or plagiarism. As long as they get the work done or pass the course. But do these students know the real consequences of cheating and plagiarism. Viewing different people aspect of this problem, this happens everywhere. In Brent Staples article “Cutting and Pasting: A senior thesis by (Insert Name)”, he is trying to get through to individuals so that they could stop doing this and the consequences. People presume that cheating/plagiarism is an okay thing to do because no one really informed it on them. Knowing the consequences will give people a reality check on life.
Too many students are getting high grades in classes they put forth no effort into. They copy off of a smart students because they know that the correct answers will score them a good grade. On paper, they are surpassing the ones who aren’t cheating because unlike the scholars who they copy from, the cheaters can pick and choose their answers from several ideal sources. By ensuring that these students are punished for cheating and are given the appropriate grade, teachers would be forcing them to learn the course material because the student would fail
As the means to cheating have been much more accessible in the recent generation, there have been many debates over whether an honor code should be implemented to enforce academic honesty. Although some may argue that even with an honor code in place there would be no one to enforce the rules, it has been proven that the placement of an honor code has indeed lowered the amount of cheating and plagiarism in classrooms. It is evident that the effects of an honor code lie not just within a classroom, but play towards life’s morals as well. The honor code plays a role in unifying the student body, instilling moral values, and support a positive learning environment.

Cheating may sound like a good idea when you forget to study for a test, or can’t complete a research paper on time, or failing a class but the consequences of cheating range from a very wide variety. Anywhere from temporary academic difficulties to serious legal problems. You can even have permanent reputation damage if you are not careful. It can permanently haunt your academic career. Cheating often goes on student’s transcripts and this can interfere with one’s ability to transfer schools or attend any kind of graduate school. Sometimes the professor may not even take disciplinary action but word gets around fast, especially if they were to tell another colleague. Then again you can also get kicked out of college completely and then it would be extremely hard for you to be able to get accepted in to any other college. There are several consequences to cheating and students should really consider if it’s worth losing everything over. As the internet makes cheating easier than ever and colleges become more competitive there needs to be some action taken place to stop it. Professors need to start cracking down and tighten the rules on classroom behavior during exams. The best long-term solution may be to take a societal approach. High school and College students’ ethics have elevated over the years and has only increased. Cheating has been a tremendous epidemic for a long period of time and recently skyrocketed because of the creation of smartphones and electronics. Students who are academically dishonest are usually in honors and advanced placement classes because they are challenged and learning a more rigorous curriculum than the other students who are in college prep courses. The reason for their actions is because of academic stress students receive on a daily basis to obtain admirable grades, so they can go to a well-known college.
Denise Clark Pope wrote “The Predicaments of Doing School.” Her main claim is that students just want an A and they will do anything for it. Students turn into “classroom chameleons” and cheat to get a higher score. Students tend to also study everything they need to know for the test or quizzes. But, once they get an A, they forget everything and move onto the next topic.

I can see both sides as to how having one may or may not help. Having an honor system is a good idea as it will help to keep most students honest. It sets a pattern for life long integrity in all areas of life. Our job as students is to construct knowledge honestly and fairly. A culture of honesty earns a great deal of respect. One of the most crucial traits a scholar can develop is a high level of self-efficacy which is essential to academic success. The ability to achieve and to recognize that success can come from being industrious should be the deterring factor for a student who considers committing the act of plagiarism. What is plagiarism one might ask? Voelker, Love & Pentina (2012) define plagiarism as, “putting forward another’s work as your own” (p. 37). This very pervasive problem plagues the education system, and many researchers and psychologist seek to explain the driving force behind students’ academic dishonesty. Woith, Jenkins & Kerber (2012, states that, “The Center for Academic Integrity (CAI) defines academic integrity as ‘a commitment, even in the face of adversity, to five fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility (Center for Academic Integrity, n.d.)’ (p. 253). Whether the act of plagiarism is knowingly or inadvertently done, it is still a moral dilemma. Honz, Kiewra & Yang (2010) posit that, “most studies report that about 75 percent of students cheat” (p. 10). As a result, this action plan is tailored towards showcasing the various methodologies and resources that student nurses can utilize in order to combat the act of plagiarism before, during and after an assignment.
After reading Dudley Delvin’s essay, “Plagiarism in America,” I have come to realize the great extent of plagiarism in American institutions. More often than one might assume, plagiarism occurs within students’ assignments. Delvin highlights the issue and presents a logical solution; however, to fully solve the epidemic, some alterations need to be made to his plan. The modern day student does not fully understand the negative consequences that plagiarism produces. In order for the high levels of cheating to decrease, students must have appropriate punishments that are enforced after each incident, surveillance of assignments, and education about plagiarism and its consequences.
As children, we were taught by our parents that it is wrong to lie, cheat, and steal. As we grow up and enter into the real world with some knowledge of right and wrong, we see, first hand, the importance of ethics as well as its complexity. The role of ethics in our society and in an individual’s life is very necessary because it has a large influence on today, as well as the future. We need to learn about good ethics because they guide our decisions, make us who we are, and determine our future.
Students go through different challenges everyday. Some have the resiliency to adapt and overcome but some do not. Stresses from peer pressure, bullying. Expectations and even family problems can easily affect the behavior and decision making of a student. A good example of a bad decision is cheating. Once caught a student can easily be the benefit of the doubt, especially when the student is committing such an act are actually good students. Instead, they should be given a chance or have teachers find the root of the problem before punishing or labeling someone as a bad student.
