Planned Parenthood Federation of America is a nonprofit organization that establishes itself on health care, functioning as an outreach program as well as a provider of various medical services. The organization was developed upon the idea that women should have easy, obtainable access to information and care to ensure a healthy life. Planned Parenthood both promotes as well as establishes this motive as the program itself is “...based on respect for each individual 's right to make informed, independent decisions about health, sex, and family planning” (Charity Navigator). Planned Parenthood was founded on October 16, 1916, in Brooklyn, New York by Margaret Sanger and Ethel Bryne. Margaret Sanger was a strong advocate for women’s health rights, …show more content…
Planned Parenthood is a topic that is continuously discussed in correlation with the concept of money as many believe that it “...emphasizes abortions instead of preventative care” (Attira). Because of birthrights, abortions, and the controversy that surrounds such issues, many individuals believe that the government should not be responsible for providing funding. Therefore, actually defunding Planned Parenthood is often brought up as a solution to the highly-debated consensus of government-funded healthcare services. Although many believe that creating a barrier between opinion and action is a positive push, actually defunding the program would be more catastrophic than perceived. Defunding Planned Parenthood would mean blocking and preventing individuals from receiving the health care that they are reliant on. As a majority of the patients are low-income and living in Medically Underserved Areas, they are dependent on the organization because it is their only source for healthcare. To view in specifics, “In 2013, 78 percent of Planned Parenthood patients had incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty line, which is $36,375 for a family of four” (Four Reasons). A majority of the individuals that are assisted are women of color; 22 percent being Latino and 14 percent being African American according to 2013 statistics. Further so, these two groups …show more content…
By being a provider and educator, the organization has created a reputation as a safe, reliable source that many individuals can depend on for their health. Nearly 4 of 10 Americans are reliant on such programs and up to 25% of Planned Parenthood patients would be completely without medical insurance if the organization was defunded. Defunding Planned Parenthood was an effort put into effect in Texas of 2011 where it proved to be disastrous for both healthcare providers and their patients. The two-year budget for Planned Parenthood was cut from $111 million to $38 million, which resulted in 82 clinics closing, reduced services and supplies, and ultimately an upcharge for what was available. This resulted in a 36% decrease in IUDs and other implants and a 31% decrease in injectable contraceptives, all because it was limited, too expensive, or too difficult to receive (Willingham). This same effort is being attempted today by Donald Trump and his legislation in order to appeal to his supporters opposed to abortions and the federal funds that they assume contribute to so. Political viewpoints should not cause infliction with basic human rights

Show MorePlanned Parenthood gave way to a change in mentality among more women and helped to raise awareness that abortion is a constitutional act that should be protected. My assigned case in particular is a landmark case because it gave way into a larger part of the women’s rights movement as well as opening the door for allowing a better regulation of abortion among each individual state. Cases that affected Casey v. Planned Parenthood were the decisions in Roe v. Wade, City of Akron v. Akron Center for Reproductive Health and Thornburgh v. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Based on the decision made in this particular case, the rulings of City of Akron v. Akron Center for Reproductive Health and Thornburgh v. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists were overturned. Twenty-three and a half years after this case was out of the Supreme Court, we as informed people who are able to critically think and debate about many issues, have trouble regulating abortion and abortion law because of the issue of law getting in the way of morality and the common man.
To qualify and receive Medicaid, one of the criteria’s are to be poor and pregnant, which is also state funded. The funding cut from Planned Parenthood, will be used in other areas involving female medical services. Some are also wondering what
Imagine the long-term savings realized by communities around the country, produced by cutting over inflated Planned Parenthood
Their services include screening and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and infections among other things regarding contraception. House speaker Paul Ryan has spoken out about Republicans plan to defund Planned Parenthood. I believe that we should continue to fund Planned Parenthood, this health center serves up to 2.5 million people each year from all different economic classes. Ever since Roe v. Wade, there has been serious controversy on abortion, and because of the mixed opinions I believe all federal funding for planned parenthood, would not be towards abortion, but for other sexual health
“Defending the unborn against their own disabilities.” Margaret Sanger is known for being a birth control, population control, and a eugenics activist. As a eugenics activist she believed that the science of improving a human population by controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristics. But before getting into too much detail about how she was the founder of “Planned Parenthood”, let's hear her backstory.
Today more than four million American individuals rely on Title X and its services. Without Title X, over four million individuals will lost the affordable preventive health care they have. Doing away with Title X is also doing away with women 's rights, and a woman 's control over her own body. I know that many of you believe that doing away with federal funding for Planned Parenthood is for the best, but in actual reality it is probably one of the worst things you could do. Doing away with Title X would lead to more unintended pregnancies because women 's access to affordable birth control would be cut off.
Planned Parenthood is able to provide these free services because of the 500 million dollars they receive from government funding yearly. Planned Parenthood has two main offices; one in New York and one in Washington D.C. but has health centers all over the country. The Planned Parenthood Action Fund has many pros and cons; it is a controversial policy due to how much money they receive from the government and where it goes, and it is also a heated topic for many Democrats and Republicans; many Republican presidential candidates, like Ted Cruz and Carly Fiorina, want to defund and get rid of Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Whether to keep funding or to defund the program is a problem considered by people and politicians and there are many reasons for both
Lastly, the number of abortions would go up if Planned Parenthood were to be defunded. Planned Parenthood offers more than just abortions, whilst they are a very small part of what Planned Parenthood offers. 42% of what they offer is STI/STD testing and treatment, 34% is contraception, an 11% is other women’s health services, 9% being cancer screening and prevention, then abortion at a small 3% of what they offer, while 1% is other services. This
A scientific approach to fetal tissue research. The political battle of whether Planned Parenthood should receive funds from the government still rages in the political field. Last week on October 19, The state of Texas has successfully cut all state funding to Planned Parenthood, an organization that provides women's health services to low income women. This is the result from the recent undercover videos showing staff members of Planned Parenthood talking about fetal tissue and profits. These videos were secretly tapped by an anti-abortion organization called Center for Medical Progress, “a group of citizen journalists dedicated to monitoring and reporting on medical ethics and advances”(CMp).
The bill was split on party lines with 248 votes in support of the Survivor Act and 241 votes to defund Planned Parenthood. This is important because if we look into how many women are involved in
Planned Parenthood is a National issue fighting for abortion access, giving women facing an unintended pregnancy must have access to safe, legal abortion services. Birth control and the fact all people deserve access to birth control and other preventive care, health care equality and the idea all people should have equal access to reproductive health care. For years politicians in Congress and statehouses across the country have attacked Planned Parenthood’s patients’ access to care. But I believe Planned Parenthood’s health centers provide high quality, affordable reproductive health care, to 2.4 million people across the country. When politicians talk about defunding Planned Parenthood, they really mean depriving patients who depend on public
There are 650 health centers, and 56 independent local affiliations (Planned Parenthood at a Glance). That is a substantial amount of facilities to offer just abortions, but the truth is that only three percent of what Planned Parenthood does is for abortion services, 80 percent of their patients receive services to prevent unintended pregnancy (Planned Parent at a Glance). Planned Parenthood offers health care to 2.5 million men and women, 270,000 pap test and 579,000 unintended pregnancies each year(Planned Parenthood Provides Essential Services That Improve Women 's Health Planned Parenthood Provides Essential Services That Improve Women 's Health), and if it was defunded that it would not just affect the funding of abortions but it would cause an estimate of “390,000 women to lose their access to these essential services altogether, and up to 650,000 women might face reduced access to preventive health care within a year” (Planned Parenthood Provides Essential Services That Improve Women 's Health Planned Parenthood Provides Essential Services That Improve Women 's Health). They provide 1.2 million pregnancy test, 360,000 breast exams, and 4.2 million test for sexually-transmitted diseases (Standing with Planned Parenthood) which include more than 650,000 HIV test (Planned Parenthood at a Glance).
Planned Parenthood is a program that has been helping people pay for essential procedures without a large fee. It should continue to be covered by the government because of the immense help it has offered people for years. As well as the cost is being funded by Title X which is helping other healthcare organizations across the United States. Planned Parenthood, as well as a negative misconception, is that they only help with abortions. Planned Parenthood helps with anything like educating people about their health.
1 out of 5 every 5 American women have visited a PPH at least once, Which is a big number of women if you think about it. Many will oppose me and bring up how we should defund planned parenthood because they still perform abortions which, in religious terms, is morally wrong. But defunding Planned Parenthood threatens millions of men and women's chances of any health care. It also won't stop abortions, it will encourage the practice of at-home abortions or them being performed by someone who isn't licensed. The money Planned Parenthood gets from the government doesn't even go towards abortions.
The term “pro-choice” has fallen out of favor when the American public. Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) recently discovered that the word just does not seem to have the power to motivate the general population in the way it did when it was first coined. And while other pro-abortion groups may continue to use it, Planned Parenthood is attempting to cast a wider net by abandoning it all together. In the modern media culture, the term “pro-choice” has been used for everything from abortion-on-demand to giving parents the option to choosing what kind of school their child can attend throughout their life.
