Why this particular book? The Alchemist is a very popular book which talks about dreams and how to make them come true. I choose this book because I have never read a Paulo Coelho book before. The book is critically well-appreciated. It is said that this is a kind of book which must be read in one’s lifetime. Therefore, this curiosity made me select it. A note on the author Paulo Coelho is the author of many popular books like The Pilgrimage, The Alchemist and Brida. He is also a lyricist and has received many international awards. The Alchemist is his all-time bestselling book and is believed to be one of his finest books ever. Coelho gives you the inspiration to follow your dreams and states that we should not avoid our destiny. Summary of the book The Alchemist is the journey of a young shepherd named Santiago who enjoys travelling and exploring new things. He decides to leave his home and travel. Once, he meets a fortune-teller in order to decode a dream wherein a child appears and transports him to the Egyptian pyramids and tells him that if he goes there, he will find his treasure. The fortune-teller insists him to go to Egypt. Later, he meets a king who tells that to realize one’s destiny is a person’s only real obligation and insists him to go to Egypt in search of the treasure. He adds that "when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it". This is the core essence of the book. Santiago works in the shop of a crystal merchant
