The Role of Youth Work in Ireland.
Introduction.
In order to answer this question you must first understand what youth work is. According to the Youth Work Act 2001, youth work is “ A planned programme of education designed for the purpose of aiding and enhancing the personal and social development of young persons through then voluntary participation, and which is complementary to the formal, academic or vocational education and training; and provided primarily by voluntary youth work organisations”. (Irishstatutebook.ie, 2014).

Detached youth work takes place where the young people socialise, in other terms it take place on their terms such as cafes, the streets and pubs. Detached youth work is all about the young person wanting to change, wanting to improve their lives. You as the youth work make the first point of contact, whether it be 1am on the streets of Dublin inviting them to the community centre for a chat the next day and then the young person taking you up on your offer to help them. Detached youth workers provide inormation and advice on many different topics, such as homelessness, education and drug abuse. In detached youth work it is important to create trust and respect betweet both the youths and the worker as they need to be able to confide in you in order for you to know whats going on their lives. A way to create and maintain a trusting relationship is to maintain contact with the youth and support them in any problems they may be facing. (Thebase.ie, …show more content…

Tuttle,Carolyn. Edited: Robert Whaples “ Child labor during the British industrial revolution.” .EH.Net Encyclopedia. August 14, 2001.
Identifying the ages of children working during this time is a powerful example showing how unfair and how unlawful the child labor laws are and why it needs to be fixed.
“We have, in this country, two million children under the age of sixteen years who are earning their bread.” This statement depicts that millions of kids are out there in the workforce, even though they shouldn’t be. They should be enjoying their freedom as kids and playing outside, By using this statistic, Kelley establishes that she’s credible and knowledgeable on the topic, hence, gaining the reader’s trust. She also delineates that “In Pennsylvania until last May it was lawful for children, 13 years of age, to work twelve hours at night. A little girl on her thirteenth birthday could start away from her home.”
The act encourages children to pursue their lives and careers so they have a better future instead of dropping them at such a young age. This pushes them to find ways to not do things they have committed but to overcome those things and become a better version of themselves. It gives young people the opportunity to be able to attend college and university, and even helps them obtain the job these kids want for themselves in the future. To put it another way, the law acknowledges that young people must be held responsible but does so in a manner that considers their higher reliance and lower level of development. This has a positive effect on the children, who are encouraged by the act to not only improve but also develop into more self-sufficient and responsible adults, particularly when they begin to learn about growth and both the advantageous and detrimental parts of
During the early 1900’s and the years before, it was common for children to work in factories, mills, and any other industrial jobs. Families at the time depended on the income these children earned. Concern began to raise of the effects these strenuous jobs and long hours had on children. These long hours deprived these children of their education; children would work sixty to seventy hours a week. It was rare for working children to get fresh air, time to play and enjoy their youth.
Given that I was born and raised in Puerto Rico by two Haitian parents, I’ve always had a strong concern for the poor living conditions in developing countries. For this reason, I am deeply passionate for international development focused on education, human rights and health. I consider working with the Peace Corps one of the highest possible callings. My wonderful years in academic philosophy studying Ethics and Foreign Languages have honed my ability to communicate well and sharpened my research skills. Yet, my professional goals in international affairs and development require a broad, multidisciplinary approach to program analysis, research and theory.
Hurley & Treacy (1993) would argue that the focus should be on consciousness raising and collective action, in an effort to bring about societal change. By implementing youth work that is focused on meeting Government priorities and prescribed outcomes, the underpinning principles of youth work (autonomy, empowerment, and a therapeutic relationship) are being forgotten (Scanlon 2011; Youth Work Act
1.1 Explain why working in partnership with others is important for children and young people - it important that you work alongside others when working with young people because it is good for them to see that people do work together and to see relationships because built as well as positive outcomes coming out from working in partnership with people. It is also good because it shows them general life skills of working with and alongside other to come up with a solution. 1.2 Identify who relevant partners would be in own work setting - relevant partners would include, parents or carers of the child so that the practitioner and parent can work together to figure out what is going to suit the child best, management to see what actions and targets could be put into place and how the setting can be developed to help the childs specific needs aswell as how it could help the setting as a whole.
ummarise the laws and codes of practice affecting work in schools. The UN Convention on the Rights of a Child 1989- This law helps a child by giving them a right to protection from any form of discrimination, it gives a child a right to recieve and share information as long as the information is not damaging to others. This law also gives the child a right to have freedom of religion.
Child welfare policies and initiatives target the care, health and well-being of children. There is no single piece of legislation that covers children’s right, but rather a multitude of laws and guidance that are continually amended, updated and revoked. Most of policies and procedures for Safeguarding and Child Protection are the result of the Children Act 1989. Legislation and guidelines related to safeguarding children and young people Children Act 1989 The aim of this act is to simplify the laws, which protect children and young people in the UK.
In many countries, employing children or teens, keeps them out of trouble and teaches them to keep a strong work ethic. An obvious reason of child employment would be poverty. In countries where the sole breadwinner only brings home a dollar a day, it 's helpful to have multiple income sources. To expand on that point, Nadira Faulmuller of Oxford University, mentioned in her article that, “The main cause for children doing work is poverty – ‘their survival and that of their families depend on it’.
This a real benefit for all young people as they will know what to expect and what experience and skills they can meet from a real job. Training young people to be a part of the labour force is a learning experience for them because they will gain knowledge about what jobs and opportunities are out there and they can discover that they are not limited to one way as there are many routes that they can take to go forward after finishing school. Training to be a part of the labour force enhances young people to come to a realisation that they are able to make many discoveries about opportunities that suit them whether it is doing an apprenticeship, going into work or moving forward to higher education. Either way, you can gain the knowledge, experience and skills that you though you never had. Schools providing training to be in the labour force is an opportunity for young people to be able to understand the importance of employment, what it is like to be able to earn a living and being able to realise that hard work in the present pays off in the
Many youth are unemployed because they have just come from high school and they do not have enough work experience to get a job. Adults are more likely to be unemployed because of physical and mental health challenges. Adults also tend to be unemployed because of cyclical, structural and frictional unemployment. Unemployment also goes into hand with homelessness and panhandling, because there is not enough jobs people are ending up homeless and looking for other ways to get money. Why are youth more likely to be unemployed than adults, and is unemployment among youth becoming a social problem?
But not all work done by children should be accepted as child labor. In other words, if a work doesn’t harm child’s health or personal development (educational issues), it is generally accepted as something positive and useful. Such activities develop children’s skills, provide experience and formulate them to be part of society. The term “Child Labor” is when children do work that damages their health or hamper mental or physical
