Schools Should Start Later in the Morning Youth Risk Behavior Survey in 2011 showed that “69% of U.S. high school students get fewer than 8 hours of sleep on school nights, and 40% get 6 or fewer hours” (McKibben). This lack of sleep can cause numerous negative side effects on teens. If school started later in the morning kid’s health and grade would improve as well as their sports performance. Schools should start later in the morning because students would be able to get the full 8-9 hours of sleep and perform better in school and sports and their health would improve. Starting school later in the morning has many benefits such as improvement in school, and sports. Better stamina and less fatigue. A Stanford University study found that college football players who tried to sleep at least 10 hours a night for seven to eight weeks improved their average sprint time and had less daytime fatigue and more stamina. The data showed a clear difference between the two counties. Among students who started class close to dawn in Virginia Beach County, there were 65.4 car crashes for every 1,000 teen drivers. From knowing these facts we know that when kids get less sleep a night the stress level will rise and the amount of car crashes will rise. 2008 study found that, in one town, delaying the school day by an hour reduced car crash rates among teens by over 16 percent. These facts show that getting more sleep in the morning can reduce the amount of stress and car crashes. Because of what these facts state it’s clear that starting schools later in the morning will reduce the amount of car crashes.
