1. Introduction
1.1 Smoking as a Health Risk
Cigarette smoking is one of the leading causes of death across the globe. Approximately six million people die every year caused by smoking addiction and exposure to secondhand smoking (World Health Organization, 2016). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cigarette smoking harms nearly every organ of the body and makes one more prone to life-threatening diseases, including coronary heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, emphysema and bronchitis. Studies on the negative effects of smoking also showed that engaging in the addictive behavior can increase the chances of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus, reduced fertility and decreased immune function.
Despite the damages and harm that come with cigarette smoking, it is still one of the most common health-risk behaviors people engage in (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, ). In fact, there are more than a billion smokers worldwide as of recent, which qualifies it as a global concern (World Health Organization, 2016). There are many reasons as to why so many people are still engaged in the act amidst widespread awareness of its grave consequences. There are psychological, social and economic factors that affect a person’s decision whether to smoke or not, or whether to continue or to stop. Models of addiction and psychosociological theories are to be discussed in succeeding sections in explaining addictive goods consumption such as smoking.
