Effects of Social Media and Cell Phones On The Youth While cell phones and social media have their pros, they are also affecting the youth negatively due to overuse. Social media and cell phones are great because they can create easy access to information and resources, but on the other hand, it can also cause lots of problems for the youth due to addiction. The average age for kids to get their first cell phone is at 10.3 years old. Cell phones can affect us positively in many ways including education, politics, awareness, social benefits, and job opportunities. Sometimes the youth is to open on social media, therefore giving out personal information that people can easily access. This can cause other social media users to stalk kids and get them to easily meet up with them. Some people may create fake accounts and say they go to the same school as you and are able to get lots of information about kids without them even knowing. There may be increased crime due to easier access to information, which may cause identity theft. Criminals may use social media to commit crimes and see when you will be gone on vacation. There are sexual predators who find and stalk kids on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. Sending sexual content is another big problem in the youth. Things can spread very quickly across the internet, therefore, causing you to never get a mistake you made back. Private photos may be posted on social media due to kids posting other kids pictures. These may even be used on other sites without the person even knowing, which is illegal. It can lead to criminal charges. Kids are now using cell phones as a way of communication, therefore, causing less human connection and communication. Kids are often not as social as they should be anymore due to the overuse of social media and texting. Instead of talking to someone face to face, they text each other or use posts to communicate about their life. Yes, social media is a good way to keep in touch with people and have some communication especially, if someone is far away from you, but there comes a point where it is taking place of actual face to face conversation and interaction with other humans. Human interaction is a very important part of kids lives. Social media often makes it awkward for kids who have been talking online or via text, their whole relationship, so that when they finally talk face to face they feel socially awkward. Social media and cell phones should not take place of human interaction and face to face conversations. In most cases, it makes kids become socially awkward because it is easier to hide behind a screen and act differently toward someone then you would in person.
