The Stanley Cup originated in Canada after Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley of Preston decided that since the sport was so popular there should be a form of championship between the teams. Lord Stanley donated a silver bowl to the Ametuer Hockey Association of Canada for the prize of the championship. The cup was originally called the Dominion Challenge Trophy, but was soon renamed the Stanley Hockey Championship Cup in 1893 after its founder. That same year it was decided that the Stanley Cup could not be owned by any of the winning hockey teams. Originally the championship was held between the ametuer teams, but in 1910 it became a prize for the professional hockey
