Patriots’ Day, the annual celebration of the events of April 19, 1775 has just concluded. Minute Man National Historical Park schedules numerous events over three consecutive weekends of events often called Patriots’ Month. Along with National Park Week, April kicks off the park season with this unique Massachusetts event. In Concord, the town turns out to celebrate the beginning of the running battle at Meriam’s Corners on the east side of town. A morning parade, followed by a salute by the Concord Minutemen and an open house at the Meriam house, got the events started.
To many she became “more alive than she ever was in life.” Selena’s death “[brought recognition to Mexican-American, and unity to Hispanics” (Anijar 2001). In particular, her impact on the community of Corpus Christi is evident. The community honors Selena with a two-day festival, Fiesta de la Flor, which started on April 2015, where proceeds go the Selena foundation. The King Cake tradition in Louisiana is thought to have been brought to New Orleans from France in 1870. The Mardi Gras or ¨Carnival in Mexico¨ holiday begins on February 13th or "Epiphany." It is relevant to me considering that this event occurs every year, and is recognized worldwide. Días de los Muertos is a very unique tradition. While reading newsweek, “What is day of the dead? How to celebrate Dia de los Muertos without being offensive” I found some interesting finds. According to the article, this holiday is “more about sharing funny anecdotes and celebrating the life of those who have died rather than mourning.” Unlike other cultures, this event is more of a party than a funeral.
Dona Rafaela Balladares decided to revive the tradition she seeked help from her neighbors to volunteer help get the festivities back started. Ancient Egypt Dear King Hammurabi, my quest from Egypt was quite a journey, let me start by telling you about the Nile River. The Nile is the longest river in the world, with a total distance of 4,000 miles long. This spectacular river floods every year, but in Egypt this is a good thing because it provided the Egyptians with fertile silt for crops. On top of that, it also provided the water of which they sailed ships out of Egypt. Fish and other animals were also in the Nile, which was another way it was good for food.
My birthday is my favorite day of the whole year, which is on May 3rd. This is the time of year where I can celebrate with my whole family and have a great time. Every year my family goes out to see a movie that is out in theaters. Usually my birthday is around the time when the Marvel movies come out. The best thing about birthdays is being with my family, opening presents, and getting an ice cream cake!
“They party night and day with parades and contests and being whomever they have always wished to be by wearing costumes and being free with themselves” (“Carnival in Spain”). The costumes can range from bright and beautiful to dark and scary monsters. Carnival ends with a tradition on Ash Wednesday. “The tradition is the Burial of the Sardine which marks the beginning of Lent” (“Carnival in Spain”). Holy Week is professionally organized by associations called Cofrades.
During the party I met several current Launch members and I had begun to feel like I was going to look forward to being associated with Launch forever. In this case, forever was going to last only my four years of high school. At my first official meeting the majority of the time was used to plan the upcoming Greenlight Walk happening in Jackson. During the walk we would be walking around Jackson to raise awareness about the problems faced by youth living on the streets. The next night was the walk and I had never felt such satisfaction.
