In the essay, “Coming Into Language,” Jimmy Santiago Baca, discusses the topic of literacy. He asserts that along the way of all the suffering he went through, he found a meaning in life through reading and writing. At the beginning, he opens up by illustrating the job he had when was only seventeen. At seventeen years old, Baca was detained by the authorities as a murder suspect and years later after being released he was arrested again. During his time in prison, he gained interest in written language because he heard other prisoners read.
Hunger of Memory is a memoir of the educational experience of Richard Rodriguez and his journey as a first generation Mexican- American citizen. The book is compiled of a prologue, in which he states his reasons for writing, and six chapters with no specific chronological order. Richard Rodriguez grew up in a white, middle-class neighborhood and attended a Catholic school. He describes his early childhood as a war between his “public” and “private life”: a war between school and home. He struggled when he first started school, because English was his second language and he felt insecure about his shaky ability to communicate through it.
Literacy Midterm Innocence. This is something that many people tend to lose over time. In the book “Bless Me Ultima” by Rudolfo Anaya, the main character, Antonio Marez y Luna, is said to have lost his innocence as he grows up. I have recreated the scene where Antonio is believed to first lose part of his innocence in a form of visual art. The art is based on my interpretation of the scene.
The stories “El Tonto del Barrio” by Jose Armas and “El Barrio” by Robert Ramirez are two pieces that illustrate the lives, traditions, and hardships of Chicanos. Hispanics make up the largest ethnic minority group in the United States. Like many other ethnic and racial minority groups, they have had to withstand discrimination in the work place and in daily life. In both stories, the most prevalent issues are poverty and the lack of education, which are directly correlated. These issues create tensions within the community and between the community and society as a whole.

Today you see many writers use their personal experiences to show portray the concept to the audience. In this essay we will explore personal experiences of both Malcom X in “A Homemade Education” and, “Learning to read and write” by Fredrick Douglas.
The literate arts have been an integral aspect of human civilization throughout history. In Richard Miller’s essay “The Dark Night of the Soul”, he poses the question, “What are the literate arts really good for?” He admits that gathering information is a clear value of the literate arts, but throughout the essay he portrays a doubtful view of their value in today’s society. Although, he brought up some interesting points, his doubts stands in contrast to the literate arts’ true role in society today. As a student, I too feel it is important to fully understand the important connections that are told within a piece of literature.
There is also the population who can not simply afford to get an education. This is where Benitez’s message on education starts to form and the audience is faced with conflicting sides of education or staying to support. The author’s message about education is that it is essential and very beneficial to anyone, which is shown in the scenario with Ines and Rafael, Beto and the teacher, as well as Candelario’s comments on education. When Rafael teaches Ines how to read and write is the perfect example of education helping the youth.
In the essay “Superman and Me”, the author, Sherman Alexie recalls the time he first learned to read. He talks about his Indian culture and the perception of people like himself. He also discusses his childhood and the outcome of learning to read. The reoccurring theme of the essay is the love of reading. The author used various literacy devices to express the feelings of empowerment, happiness and the necessity that came with learning to read.
Once, American football player, coach and executive Vince Lombardi said “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand. Hunger of Memory is the story of Richard Rodriguez, a Mexican American who begins his studies in California without knowing English and steps up finishing his studies at a university of prestige. His life is challenging and full of nostalgia and that is what makes the reader truly get the feeling. In Hunger of Memory, Richard feels a loss, and this is because he gives up his native language; Spanish.
As a college student, Emily Vallowe wrote a literacy narrative with a play on words title: “Write or Wrong Identity.” In this work, she told the story of how she believed her confidence as a writer developed; however, she was becoming dubious as to her distinctiveness as an author. Although I have never been a self-proclaimed wordsmith as Ms. Vallowe obviously had been for years, I related to her journey. Not only did she grow up in Northern Virginia like I did, she never considered herself an inept writer—a possibility that I could not fathom about myself. Then, at some point, we both began to question our own ability and to question who we really were.
In the essays, “Reading to Write” by Stephen King, “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, “Learning to Read” Malcolm X, and “Learning to Write” by Frederick Douglas have three things in common. In each essay Reading has contributed towards the authors life leading to benefit from learning to read, allowing them to leave a legacy behind. In each essay the authors has thought their self how unlike Frederick Douglass. For Stephen King, reading has done a lot for him. King stated, “Every book you pick up has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more to teach than the good ones” (221).
As a college student, I still feel like my literacy is evolving with every essay I write. But, through my literacy autobiography and literacy experiences. I have gained through the process of “growing up” as an educator. I 'd like to capture the hearts and minds of readers through my journey and experiences with literacy. As I take you back into the past of how literacy has grown inside me.
The history of my literacy has been a long road of a frustration and learned lessons. As a child, I was a bit of a loner so reading and writing were the closest thing to a social life for me. The things that I bottled up inside came out through my writing and it became somewhat of a pass time for me. As long I could remember literacy as has been an important value for me in my life because from very young age I got express my true self without being judged by the outside. Even though in my later years I would deal with some heartaches and set back that lead me to give up on my love for reading.
Life is complicated and everyone goes through stress no matter who you are and what you do some things will catch you off garde in life. Yet not matter what you should never let the challenges of life consume you or interfere with your life goals. The pursuit of happiness was directed by Gabriele Muccino this movie depicts the real life events of of Chris Gardner and the struggles he went through in life to pursue happiness. Common features of these definitions are money and the system in which how they are closely related. For instance, as the money enters into the system, money becomes stuck inside the system and money flowing out of the system.
