THE INTERACTIVE MODEL
As seen in the above section, the bottom- up model of reading describes a view of reading as a decoding procedure in which the reader reconstructs the writer’s intended meaning by the smallest textual components – words and sentences. In the bottom-up model, ESL/EFL readers’ problems in comprehension of a text are related to decoding problems of smallest textual units.
According to top-down model, there is an interaction between reader and text, and the reader is an active participant in the process of reading the script. Reading texts are usually loaded with complex language structures, words and unfamiliar cultural points which often create problems in comprehension of the text for the learners.

For instance, when a reader cannot build up meaning by using the appropriate content schemata( related with the content area and cultural knowledge) she may utilize bottom-up processing ( by word to word analysis of the text to find the meaning from the text)to make up for the missing knowledge. Similarly, when a reader lacks the bottom-up skills necessary to comprehend a text, she can resort to top down processing to obtain the required meaning.
Research thus suggests that the interactive model is more effective than other models for the following reasons:

A bottom up model stresses on single direction in approaching a text i.e. going from small parts to whole. It moves from sounds to words and then sentences and finally paragraph. A top down model is cognitive based and meaning driven. It emphasizes to what reader bring for extraction of meaning to the text. In a top down process the reader moves from whole to smallest parts. An interactive model is constructivist-based model, uses both bottom up, and top down processing for dealing with a text. In Chapter 24 of How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Thomas Foster claims that in order to understand the meaning of a work, the reader must read and analyze the text from the perspective from which it was written. In the first section of Chapter 24 Foster states that readers, in order to fully enjoy a piece of text must not take the information presented the way it was intended. Similarly readers may miss key points of what the author is attempting to say if they analyze the text with only today's culture in mind. In the beginning of Chapter ¬15 of How To Read Literature Like A Professor, Thomas C. Foster first introduces the very known fact that humans cannot fly. So if a human is able to in a piece of literature, it belongs to the categories he lists later on. However, the categorization is an superficial analyzation of flying. He introduces the history of flying and how humans have strived to defied the laws of gravity forever. Foster analyzes Morrison’s Song of Solomon and explain how when Solomon flew off to Africa it is an act of returning “home” and “casting off the chains of slavery on one level”(Foster 92).
Thomas C. Foster states in his book How to Read Literature Like a Professor, that there are three main items to understanding literature. The first item is memory; Memory helps a reader connect works of literature with other experiences as a way of possibly better understating the writing at hand. Symbolism is the second item noted by Foster. Symbolism can be used to open a readers mind to the big picture being painted. Not all works of literature are as complicated, as to where symbolism is splattered through the pages.
As Stated by the author of How to Read Literature Like a Professor For Kids, by Thomas Foster, authors use certain varieties of weather conditions in order to set a mood in the story that’s relevant to the scenario present. Foster explains this action as saying, “But an author doesn't have a quick shower of rain, or a flurry or snow, or a flood or a blizzard, for no reason at all (Foster, 59).” What the author is trying to remark is that authors don't put unnecessary weather unless it contributes to the plot or the mood, sometimes even using it as means of ivory. How does a third person omniscient narrator affect a story? The Lovely Bones, a novel by Alice Sebold, is about a girl named Susie who is raped and killed. After being killed, Susie goes off to Heaven and we are shown how she adapts to living in heaven. We see her killer continue to live among her family and friends, and we see her family fall apart. Susie knows what everyone does and thinks, and she shares this with the reader.
To the untrained eye, a story could be viewed one-dimensionally; a tale might only appeal to emotion while logic is left out in the cold. Equally, logic may be forgotten while emotion is heavily focused on. However, through the use of Critical Lenses, readers can begin to see greater depth in literature. As readers find connections through Critical Lenses, they become more educated on various topics, more aware of social, political, and even logical abstractions. Instead of failing to retain the intent and content of the material, they even can remember details of stories more vividly when truly examining literature rather than reading it once for entertainment (or chore).
Literacy narratives help accomplish multiple tasks so their work can fall into the genre of narrative literacy. Looking into Graff , Barrientos , and Alexie narrative stories we see they all share the same task, which is to share their experience with reading. Other task they incorporated into their stories was to share tips o how to read. For example, using cliff notes to give you a heads up on what you will be reading. Graff shows us how he used cliff notes to engage in a "classic" book, therefore he was able to annotate the reading.
As each writing assignments is graded, I realize how much I have improved as a writer by the grade and the fewer mistakes that I have made in them. As each time the grammatical and spelling mistakes are fewer on each paper. I want to share how I have grown as a writer on second semester by being in class and reflecting on my previous assignments. Even though there weren’t many writing assignments this semester. There were some assignments that I have done poorly on.
Teaching assistant can model re-reading of the text if the meaning is unclear and can model working out a difficult word. Writing can be modelled by using the whiteboard. Teaching assistant can model how to use strategies to help reading and writing. Through the modelling process the children should get confident enough to talk, think, share and reflect; they should want to be let free to do their
Members of the treatment centre do not only have trouble with substance abuse but may have another problem along with it such as depression. Due to this, the therapeutic community model is the main model used because it is holistic. This model is also the main model used because the program not only focuses on helping individuals recover from substance abuse but also help them be able to become employed or go back to school when they set back out into the world. According to Mr. Jurawan, the centre wants to ensure individuals are able to get back up on their feet and have a better life. Evaluate the usefulness of the model(s) at the treatment center.
