The Importance Of Memories In The Giver By Lois Lowry

In the book, The Giver, the main character Jonas, is selected as the next Receiver of Memory because he displayed four traits; Intelligence, Integrity, Courage, and Wisdom. Today, I will show what I have found of Jonas’ integrity throughout the book. Through his words, behavior, and actions, we will see the integrity that gave Jonas his role as Receiver. So let’s get started.

Have you ever wondered if there could possibly be a community where no one has any idea of normal everyday things? Well then the Giver is just one example. The Giver has a long history, and it all started with Lois Lowry’s dad and how he forgot his memory of any bad thing and Lois Lowry started thinking what a Community would be like without any painful memories and she came up with The Giver. The Giver revolves around a young boy named Jonas who was chosen to be the new Receiver of Memory which is the highest honor in his community. While Jonas is training he gets all of the memories that everyone else in the community has and then starts to think why can’t other people have these memories he then comes up with a plan to escape the community

Imagine living in a community where one person is chosen to hold all of the world´s memories. Being alone, afraid and separate. Jonas has been through all of these emotions as the Receiver. Jonas's assignment to be the Receiver of Memory is a punishment. Jonas has to receive painful and harsh memories from the Giver, that no one else has to have. Jonas feels different from his friends, and realizes that he is not the same as everyone else. Jonas is learning more things about what the world is really like, and is realizing that his training will be more painful than what he thought.

Today 's society and Jonas’s have some similarities. Such as, in both children are given comfort objects to help them through rough times. Well just like in The Giver all children go to school in our country too. Another similarity is in The Giver people are punished from chimes just like us today. On chapter 18, page 143, the giver tells Jonas about the previous receiver, it says that , “Rosemary left here that day, left this room and did not go back to her dwelling. I was notified by the speaker that she had gone directly to the chief elder and asked to be released.” the Giver told Jonas that once Rosemary got released, and the memories were released too. So Jonas thought that if Rosemary released the memories, he thought that he could too, to make the memories go back to the people, so he asked the giver. On chapter 21, page 163, it says that, “ That night, Jonas was forced to fee. He left the dwelling shortly after the sky became dark and the community still.” So on chapter 23, page 180, when Jonas when to the boundaries it says, “ Downward, downward, faster and faster. Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him. Behind him, vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left. He thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was an echo.” and he accomplished his wanting to save his community. He did this to have a good life and not

Would you give up love and true happiness for a life without pain? In the dystopian novel The Giver, written by Lois Lowry, strong emotion is sacrificed for a peaceful environment. The depicted community at first appears to be a utopia, where hate and discrimination are abolished, but the emotionless society is quickly revealed to be dystopian as the story continues. They live in a world of sameness; there is no hunger, suffering, or war, but also no color, diversity, or sensuality. The protagonist, a twelve-year-old boy named Jonas, uncovers the truth about his community when he is assigned to be the Receiver of Memory, and acquires the memories from the past from an elder called the Giver. When Jonas experiences both painful and pleasurable memories, he becomes willing to accept pain and suffering in order to experience the fullness of life. He decides to leave, that he will no longer live within the constraints of his community, and that security is not worth the absence of freedom. The line between public safety and personal freedoms should be drawn where extreme harm can occur, and most freedoms are more essential than an orderly society. These freedoms include color and diversity, personal freedoms such as dress code, speech, and religion, and love and marriage.

“You were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self, to live out your purpose and to do it courageously.” This quote by Dr. Steve Maraboli states that life has a purpose that you have to reach out to. The objects in life are growth and the discovery of new things, and that can’t happen unless you push your limitations. The main character, Jonas, in Lois Lowry’s The Giver goes through a similar encounter when he is specially selected as the Receiver of Memories for his community. With his assignment as the Receiver, Jonas begins to see his community differently and its absence in color, feeling, and choices. In order to live your life, you have to uncover new things, and when that happens, it will open a door for more things to discover.

At first The Giver warns Jonas that this process of receiving memories “will be painful”(Lowery 85). This pain comes in the form of both the joyful and the terrifying memories. The positive memories that he receives cause him pain because they make him see how much happier the people in his community could be. “Jonas’s realizations about the constraints of this rigidly organized life come gradually", but they begin to weigh on him (Chamberlain). Everytime he learns something new about the past he is overcome by the will to share all of his mental experiences with the rest of the population, but he knows he is not able to do this. His awareness about what could be versus what is cause him more and more heartache every moment. On top of this The Giver begins to transfer “the painful memories” to Jonas where he learns “physical and emotional pain experienced through injury, loss, grief, rage, and cruelty” (Zirkle). He goes through “suffering” and “even Violence” when he receives a memory of a dying soldier on a battlefield (Chamberlain). The effect that this particular memory has on Jonas is portrayed through this sentence “overwhelmed by pain, he laid there in the fearsome stench for hours, listened to the men and

I have read the dystopian novel “The Giver” (1993) which is written by the beloved American author Lois Lowry. “The Giver” is about a twelve-year-old boy with the name Jonas. Jonas lives a similar life as all the others in the community, until the Ceremony of Twelve when he got assigned the task as the Receiver of Memory. As The Receiver of Memory it is Jonas’ task to keep all the memories of the past so not everyone needs to keep this burden. Although Jonas received beautiful memories with a lot of colors and happiness he also felt grief, pain and anger. The Giver and Jonas were tired of being the only ones who have to keep the memories and feel the pain. Therefore, does Jonas leave the community so the memories will bit by bit, come back to the citizens of the community.

Imagine a world where everything seems perfect but truly it is not as pleasant as it appears. In The Giver by Lois Lowry shows us a community in the future with no feelings at all. Jonas a twelve year old boy knows his life as it is and one evening he learns the truth about the community. Jonas set’s off into a adventure to change it all. Character,conflict,and symbolism makes the reader see thru the eyes of a twelve year old in a place of slavery disguised without anyone knowing it.

Lois Lowry, the author, wrote a novel titled “The Giver” which took place in a dystopian society with ideas like climate control, sameness, and precision of language. The main character, Jonas, was selected for the assignment “The Receiver of Memory” and this assignment caused him many hardships. Throughout the story, Jonas faces many hardships related to his assignment, his friends, and the community. The theme to the story is overcoming obstacles because Jonas has to conquer many hardships throughout the novel.

Is life meaningless without memories?in The Giver,By Lois Lowry, Jonas lives in a perfect society but the Giver is the only one with memories of the past.The Giver helps them to remember feeling and the past. Life is meaningless without memories because they help you remember important parts of the past. Life would be boring and there would be no real relationships.

Just think. Nobody has any knowledge of the past. You do not know what color is, you have no emotion, and everybody is the same. The world that you live in is colorless, emotionless, drab, even lifeless. This is the type of world that Jonas and The Giver live in. However, The Giver has a memory of the past, color, and emotions. The Giver transmits these memories to Jonas, and the two of them are the only people in their community with this knowledge. In the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry, the author proves that knowledge has the power to change a person's opinions, likes, and dislikes through the memories that The Giver bestowes upon Jonas.

In The Giver, Jonas and the Giver are the only ones holding all the memories. Jonas and the Giver hold great responsibility in their community. The community seems to be fine with not having all the memories so they can have a “perfect” life. Although, it wouldn’t be a perfect life for one or two people, Jonas and the giver, because they have to hold all the memories. But, everybody should hold their own memories, because it would be less of a burden for Jonas, without your own memories you won’t have true feelings, and Experiencing different, your own, memories makes you unique.

I have read the novel, “The Giver”, written by the famous American writer Lois Lowry. This book was written under author’s impression after visiting her aging father in the hospital, who had lost his long term memory. The idea of the book is the importance of memory. The novel is set in a society which seems like utopian, in this society there is no hunger, sadness, or misery. However this utopian society is held from experiencing true emotions. This lack of emotion is causing serious problems for the main character Jonas, when he was elected to be the new guardian of memory. It was his job to make sure no one found out about the past. Since the community is build perfect, and they will not feel any kind of emotion even if it’s a good feeling like love.
